☆ FTX creditors will make money on bankruptcy: $1.19 for every dollar

Almost all of the creditors of failed crypto company FTX will end up profiting from the money they put into the exchange, a federal bankruptcy judge ruled Monday. Ray, who also shepherded Enron through bankruptcy, added that the estate is working to finalize arrangements to make distributions to creditors around the world. FTX previously estimated that it owes creditors around $11.2 billion. According to the plan approved by Delaware bankruptcy Judge John Dorsey, 98% of FTX's creditors will get 119% of the amount of their allowed claim as of November 2022, when the exchange filed for bankruptcy protection. The bankruptcy estate says it will make a separate announcement about the date the payout plan will go into effect and when it anticipates the start of distributions.

Voting in Katmai National Park's famed Fat Bear Week was underway Wednesday after a bear killed one of this year's competitors and delayed the bracket reveal by a day. Voting takes place over the course of seven days, culminating in Fat Bear Tuesday, when one bear is crowned the fattest of the season. The winner will then try to beat Bear #128, also known as Grazer, a mother bear who holds last year's Fat Bear title. The injured cub later died and the surviving cub competed in Fat Bear Junior 2024, according to the park service. In another round one face-off, Bear #903, a smaller male and another Fat Bear Week newbie, will meet Bear #909, the mother of the junior contest's winner.

CNN —For the first time in Rwanda’s history, its health ministry is dealing with an outbreak of Marburg virus disease, a rare but deadly hemorrhagic disease similar to Ebola – but unlike Ebola, there is no treatment or vaccines for Marburg, and it has a fatality rate of 88%. In addition to sending medical supplies, the World Health Organization said over the weekend that it is deploying a team of seven global experts in hemorrhagic disease to Rwanda who can provide guidance for public health experts on the ground. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday that it is also sending experts to Rwanda to help support testing and contact-tracing efforts. There are no cases of Marburg in the United States, and the risk to Americans with this outbreak is low. Unlike in some other sub-Saharan African countries that have dealt with Marburg virus disease, Rwanda has a strong public health system, according to WHO.

A Colorado jury on Monday rejected an insanity defense and convicted the man who gunned down 10 people at a Boulder supermarket three years ago of murder. Ahmad Alissa, 25, was found guilty on all 55 charges, including 10 counts of first-degree murder, in the March 22, 2021, assault at King Soopers. Alissa remained seated as the verdicts were read and didn’t appear to show any demonstrative reaction. Responding Boulder Police Officer Eric Talley, 51, was the first law enforcement agent to arrive at the King Soopers when he was killed. London CNN —The European Union will loan Ukraine up to €35 billion ($39 billion) to help rebuild its economy, the bloc’s executive arm announced Friday. Western nations froze Russia’s assets in bank accounts located in Europe and the United States as part of a massive wave of sanctions enacted after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Von der Leyen’s visit to Kyiv comes just as the winter heating season starts in Ukraine.
