The door plug was removed at the Boeing factory in Renton, Washington, last September so that problems with some rivets could be repaired. But the necessary paperwork for that temporary door plug removal was apparently never created. But under questioning from the NTSB Lund admitted that it’s not clear who and when that door plug was put in place. “Are you 100% sure there will never be an unauthorized removal (of a door plug)?” Homendy asked. Asked if he could promise there will not be another door plug improperly installed, Silva answer, “I cannot make a promise or guarantee of that.

The investigation was launched in January after Israel accused some UNRWA employees of participating in the attack that left 1,200 people in Israel dead. “The evidence obtained by OIOS indicated that the UNRWA staff members may have been involved in the armed attacks of 7 October 2023,” OIOS said in a statement. Nonetheless, UNWRA in January said that it had terminated the accused employees’ contracts. They also reviewed UNRWA employees’ communications and media reports. “Because of safety concerns,” they did not meet with the accused UNRWA staff or corroborating witnesses.

Musk said the company embedded a Neuralink chip into the brain of its first patient in January 2024. AdvertisementMusk has billed Neuralink as a technology that, in the future, could facilitate "symbiosis" between humans and artificial intelligence. Musk himself has criticized OpenAI, the world's leading AI company, which he helped found, for being too aggressive and not adequately considering the importance of safety. Williams's research doesn't bode well for the world's armrest-clutchers. That means more clear-air turbulence — the kind that's not associated with storms or mountains, and can sneak up on pilots. Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)His research group found that, by 2020, severe clear-air turbulence in the North Atlantic had increased 55% over 1979 levels. AdvertisementOther adaptations might balance out the climate-driven turbulence surge, like better forecasting and new lidar technology that could use to lasers to show pilots upcoming clear-air turbulence. If airlines keep innovating, more turbulence in the atmosphere doesn't have to mean more turbulence on your flight.

Air New Zealand is waiting for eight Boeing 787 Dreamliners and five Airbus A320neo and A3201neo planes, according to its website. SAF has a lower carbon footprint than traditional jet fuel because it’s made from waste products, where the carbon has already been emitted; or from plants that absorb CO2 as they grow. That was much higher than the 5% reduction target in international aviation emissions by 2030 agreed by 193 countries at a United Nations-backed conference last November. The aviation industry accounted for 2% of global energy-related carbon emissions in 2022, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). “Planned production capacity for sustainable aviation fuels will provide just a small fraction of jet fuel demand by 2027,” notes the IEA on its website.

The goal prompted a barrage of objects to rain down on the field from the stands, followed by a smattering of fans. In the interests of safety, the referee called the players off the field. The game, however, had not ended; it had merely paused. Morocco played out the final few minutes, the stadium now empty, and won, 2-1. Officially, that is how the game finished.

Lamb Weston was the worst-performing stock in the S & P 500 on Wednesday on the back of disappointing quarterly results. The Idaho-based supplier of frozen potato, sweet potato, appetizer and vegetable products to restaurants said fully diluted earnings per share fell more than 70% from the year-earlier period. Consequently, the stock price fell over 28% on Wednesday. At ~ 1.2x price to sales, Lamb Weston is the cheapest it has been in the past ten years. Some of that increase is justifiable; the company demonstrated considerably higher operating volatility than they or investors expected, and the debt-to-equity increase as a function of the stock price decline is also a contributor.

Interest in emerging markets has been growing and investors are now looking out for sectors and stocks best placed to benefit. "Emerging markets are too important to ignore," says Malcolm Dorson, a senior portfolio manager at the U.S.-headquartered Mirae Asset, which has around $600 billion in assets under management. "Emerging markets have a multi-decade story with significant opportunities. More than 4 billion people live across emerging markets, Dorson noted, adding that each country will have "significant domestic consumption stories [and] long-term opportunities." One of the simplest routes to investing in emerging markets is through exchange-traded funds.

Las Vegas Review-journal | Tribune News Service | Getty ImagesOn your next visit to Vegas, an extra set of eyes will be watching you if you decide to hop onto the local transit system. Violent crime on transit systems, specifically, remains an issue in major metro areas, with a report released in late 2023 by the Department of Transportation detailing concerns from transit agency officials around the U.S. about rising violence on their transit systems. Atteberry stressed that the ZeroEyes system is not designed to detect lawful, legal firearms that might be in a holster or packed in a purse. It is unlikely that any team has ever arrived at an Olympics the way the men’s soccer team of Israel rolled up to the Parc de Princes on Wednesday night. Police vans led the way, dozens of them filled with squads of French riot police and surrounded by a phalanx of officers on motorcycles. Then came more vans, more police outriders, more sirens — a stunning show of force with one task: to protect the first Israeli participants to take the field of play in the Paris Games. The security of Israel’s team at the Olympics — any Olympics — has been a critical issue since the killing of 11 athletes and coaches at the Munich Games in 1972. The ongoing war in Gaza and the global protests that have accompanied it have made the Paris Games perhaps the most fraught sporting event featuring Israeli athletes in the half-century since then.

London CNN —Ryanair said Monday that it expects airfares during the busy summer travel season to be “materially lower” than last year as the low-cost carrier reported a plunge in profits. Europe’s biggest airline by passenger numbers, comparable in size to Delta Air Lines in the United States, said its average fare fell nearly 15% in the April-to-June quarter from the same period in 2023, to €41.93 ($45.65) from €49.07 ($53.42). Ryanair (RYAAY) attributed that dip in the first quarter of its financial year, in part, to the timing of the Easter break this year, some of which fell over March. The airline previously thought fares would be “flat to modestly up,” he added. Ryanair reported a 46% fall in profits in the first quarter of the year, to €360 million ($392 million), despite a 10% rise in the number of passengers.

CNN —Sixteen people were killed after a fire broke out at a shopping mall in southwest China on Wednesday, according to Chinese state media. Dramatic images showed a huge column of black smoke billowing from the 14-story building in the city of Zigong, Sichuan province. Rescuers work at the site of the fire in China's Zigong city on July 17, 2024. Such incidents are not uncommon in China, where enforcement of safety standards is often lax. In January, a fire at a mixed-use building in southeast China killed at least 39 people just days after another blaze at a boarding school in central Henan province killed 13 children.
