Of the six regional lenders that were part of the test, Bank of New York Mellon (BK.N) and US Bancorp (USB.N) added 1.5% and 0.8%, respectively. J.P. Morgan downgraded the bank to 'neutral' in anticipation of an increase in capital requirements hurting its profitability. Citigroup (C.N) rose marginally, but trailed its peers as analysts expect that an increase in its stress capital buffer would hamper its plans to improve profitability. "Citi will now have the highest CET1 requirement among our banks at 12.3%," J.P. Morgan analysts wrote in a client note. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 Banks Index (.SPXBK), tracking a basket of large-cap bank stocks, is up 0.9% quarter-to-date, but has fallen 12.2% so far this year.

And the highly regulated institutions wanting to give their clients access to bitcoin are still a little skeptical that the crypto industry has learned its lessons. Another issue is there aren't enough dedicated custodians in the crypto industry. The Go Network acts as a platform on which partner firms can execute and settle trades between crypto assets and fiat currencies. BitGo handles custody of crypto assets while dollars are spread across a network of banks for safekeeping. "[The crypto industry] was operating on the edge, saying, it's risky, but we're making a lot of money.

NEW YORK, June 29 (Reuters Breakingviews) - For the biggest U.S. banks, the nerves this year come after the exam. Fed stress tests subject banks to a theoretical market shock and incorporate elements of operational risk, and then spit out a “stress capital buffer” requirement tailored to each firm. The risk for banks is that new rules get piled on top of existing regulations in a process known as gold-plating. U.S. banks are awaiting a proposal from their regulators to revamp capital rules, expected in July. Gruenberg said regulators were considering expanding the reach of a stricter set of capital rules to include banks with over $100 billion in assets.

WASHINGTON, June 28 (Reuters) - Big U.S. banks' commercial real estate portfolios put in a surprisingly good performance during the Federal Reserve's annual health checks, with losses declining slightly on last year, the central bank said on Wednesday. With risks growing in the commercial real estate (CRE) sector globally, analysts and investors were looking to the Fed's "stress tests" for more insight on how exposed the country's lenders are to falling real estate prices. Commercial real estate (CRE), especially offices, has been hit by interest rates hikes and workers choosing to stay at home. The Fed's annual bank "stress tests" established following the 2007-2009 financial crisis probe how lenders would fare against an extreme scenario: a 40% decline in commercial real estate values. The average projected CRE loan loss rate across the group was 8.8% of average loan balances, compared with 9.8% last year, the Fed said.

Berger had already been sentenced to eight years in jail in December after a similar trial. The public prosecutor had demanded a prison sentence of 10 and a half years and the confiscation of assets. Berger's sentences follow nearly a decade of investigations that government officials say span around 1,500 suspects and 100 banks on four continents. Authorities have raided the German branches of companies including Barclays (BARC.L), Bank of America (BAC.N), JP Morgan (JPM.N) and Morgan Stanley (MS.N) in their investigations. In September, Bank of New York Mellon Corp (BK.N), Germany's Warburg Group and Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) said they would pay a combined 60 million euros to tax authorities over the scandal.
Here’s what’s in the debt ceiling dealPresident Biden and Republican House Speaker McCarthy put their long weekend to good use, coming to an agreement to raise the debt ceiling in the hope of avoiding a self imposed default on US government debt. If Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling by June 5, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warns the government will not have enough funds to pay all of the nation’s obligations in full and on time. The debt ceiling bill does that, rescinding $1.4 billion in IRS funding. Corporate America celebrates debt ceiling dealIt appears that US industry is pleased with the debt ceiling deal, and would like Congress to pass it quickly. Leading business groups praised Biden and McCarthy for forging a bipartisan agreement over the weekend, reports my colleague Matt Egan.
Berkshire’s annual shareholder meeting in Omaha, Neb., was held earlier this month. Photo: Madeline Cass for The Wall Street JournalWarren Buffett ’s company spent the first quarter opening a new position in Capital One Financial and adding to its already large holdings of Bank of America and Apple . A regulatory filing released Monday showed Berkshire Hathaway trimmed its stakes in Chevron , General Motors , Amazon.com and Activision Blizzard , among other companies. It dumped the remainder of its stakes in Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing , Bank of New York Mellon , U.S. Bancorp and RH , the home-furnishings company formerly known as Restoration Hardware.
Einhorn's Greenlight Capital took small stakes in New York Community Bancorp and First Citizens Bancshares in the first quarter, with each bet worth about $20 million, according to a regulatory filing. New York Community Bancorp's subsidiary, Flagstar, acquired Signature Bank assets after that bank was shuttered , while First Citizens bought a large portion of Silicon Valley Bank assets . New York Community shares are up nearly 20% this year, while First Citizens' stock has jumped more than 68% on the year. 'Big Short' Burry of "Big Short" fame snapped up a slew of regional banks last quarter, including New York Community Bancorp , Capital One Financial , Western Alliance , PacWest Bancorp and Huntington Bancshares during the first quarter. To make matters more confusing, the conglomerate dumped its remaining stakes in Bank of New York Mellon and U.S. Bancorp .
The S&P Regional Banking Index fell approximately 25% during the quarter as a run on deposits sank Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank in March, both of which were at the time the largest banking failures since the Great Financial Crisis. The S&P Regional Banking index is now down 36% for the year to date. Famed "Big Short" investor Michael Burry's Scion Asset Management, meanwhile, added a number of new positions in regional banks, including stakes in First Republic, PacWest (PACW.O) and Western Alliance Bancorp (WAL.N). Shares of regional banks have remained volatile in recent weeks, with some investors wary of more tumult to come in the sector. London-based Marshall Wace sold 51,300 shares of First Republic in the first quarter, closing its position in the bank.

Wall Street aces its real-life stress test

One flaw in this plan is that the Federal Reserve, which designs the stress test, has tended to assume that when bad times come, interest rates would fall, not rise. Because their clients also fear sudden shifts in interest rates, they call on fixed-income securities desks to help offlay the risk. One clear outcome of higher interest rates is that banks are lending less, and more carefully. Reuters Graphics Reuters GraphicsFollow @johnsfoley on TwitterCONTEXT NEWSLarge U.S. banks reported their first-quarter earnings between April 14 and April 19. REUTERS/Dado RuvicLONDON, April 19 (Reuters) - Crypto firms have been left scrambling to find banking partners after the collapse of three crypto-friendly lenders in the U.S. last month, creating a risk their business will become concentrated in smaller financial institutions. Mainstream banks have become increasingly wary of crypto clients following a series of high-profile collapses, including the bankruptcy of major exchange FTX in November last year, and a lack of regulation. "Crypto and Web3 start-ups are telling us they simply cannot get a business bank account," said Marcus Foster, head of crypto policy at Coadec, a body representing UK start-ups. A spokesperson for ING said the bank does not "target or focus actively on crypto firms" so its exposure is "very limited." But for smaller crypto start-ups, securing a banking partner could be more difficult, said Ricardo Mico, the U.S. CEO of Banxa (BNXA.V), a payment and compliance infrastructure provider for crypto.
The dollar's position as a top reserve currency, however, may be somewhat less certain. They pointed to Russia's invasion of Ukraine as a catalyst for the currency's drop-off as a reserve currency. "We believe the erosion of the dollar's reserve currency status has accelerated in recent years at an alarming pace," Eurizon said. Here's the takeaway forecasters seem to agree on: The dollar's losing some ground as a global reserve currency, but none at all as far as international trade. Morning Bid: Global pulse picks up, rates creep higher again

A look at the day ahead in U.S. and global markets from Mike DolanWith investors largely assuming recession ahead, an accelerating global economic pulse challenges the narrative and is seeing interest rates tick back higher again as the March banking wobble subsides. With March starts and permits numbers out later, there was also signs of a troughing in the U.S. housing market. Confidence among U.S. single-family homebuilders improved for a fourth straight month in April as a dearth of previously owned homes and falling mortgage rates boosted demand. Wall St futures were higher again on Tuesday, with European bourses and most Asia indices advancing too. With euro zone and UK rate expectations pushing higher too, the dollar slipped back again against the euro and sterling .
