Sean “Diddy” Combs has been moved to a section of the New York City jail where convicted cryptocurrency fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried is being held, sources confirm to NBC News. The area of the detention center is reserved for detainees who require special protection, three sources familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Combs, 54, was arrested last week and is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, a federal jail that has a notorious reputation for violence and poor care. Bankman-Fried, known as SBF, was convicted in November and was sentenced in March to 25 years in federal prison. Combs has not been convicted and has pleaded not guilty, but a federal judge on Sept. 17 ordered that he be held in jail pending trial.

Alaska Airlines said on Wednesday it had completed its $1.9 billion acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines after reaching an agreement with the U.S. Department of Transportation. The airlines on Tuesday agreed to maintain key Hawaiian routes and adopt consumer protections under an agreement that will last six years. The Justice Department in August chose not to block the deal that was announced in December by Alaska, the fifth-largest domestic U.S. airline, to merge with Hawaiian, the 10th-largest carrier. Alaska CEO Ben Minicucci said in an interview that the deal would be good for competition and consumers and would expand access for consumers to both networks and give Alaska access to Hawaiian’s fleet of wide-body airplanes. Hawaiian Airlines’ stock will be de-listed and will cease trading on the Nasdaq on Wednesday, Alaska said in a statement.

The supply of drinking water for parts of Long Island is under threat, according to a new federal report. The report found that the groundwater in some coastal areas of Nassau County, a major suburb of New York City, is increasingly turning salty. That shift, called saltwater intrusion, is the result of decades of pumping fresh water out of wells for homes and irrigation, creating space for saltwater from the ocean to seep into the underground aquifers once filled with freshwater. The change could take generations to reverse, even if pumping stopped altogether, according to the report. And it could force coastal areas — including Long Beach, Great Neck and Oyster Bay — to look for new supplies of drinking water, possibly by digging wells further inland, which could put new pressure on those places as well.

The New York Times editorial board will no longer make endorsements in New York elections, including in races for governor and mayor of New York City, The Times’s Opinion editor said. It might seem more like an artform than a sport, but breakdancing — known professionally as breaking — is making its Olympics debut this month in Paris. The Olympics adopted the same name to honor its culture and history and preserve its authenticity, Nifontov said. Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. acknowledged Sunday that he abandoned a young dead bear in Central Park after he initially planned to skin the cub for meat. Kennedy described driving north of New York City to go falconing with a group when he saw a woman in a van hit and kill a young bear. "It's going to be a bad story," Kennedy predicted in the video as people laughed. A dead bear cub was found in Central Park in 2014, leading to significant media coverage. The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation referred NBC News' request for comment to the New York Police Department, which did not immediately respond.

Sections of the Rockaway Peninsula, a coastal strip of land in southern Queens, look like beach towns more than the concrete and steel landscape of much of New York City. On a mile-long stretch of the boardwalk in Edgemere, a neighborhood in the Rockaways that was a thriving resort destination a century ago, you can still see open skies, dunes and the ocean. But for most of the summer, the beach here is closed. Since 1996, this swath of sand and surf has been reserved for much of the spring and summer for nesting coastal piping plovers, which are endangered in New York and protected federally by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Along the Eastern Seaboard, from barrier islands to private and public beaches on the mainland, efforts are being made to provide safe habitats for them.

Three years ago, as Eric Adams was running for mayor of New York City, his campaign was raking in donations from a broad range of mysterious sources. There was the $201,330 delivered by unidentified intermediaries through 57 clusters of donations, some from people working at institutions with ties to Turkey. Their contributions are being scrutinized in a federal investigation focused in part on potentially unlawful foreign money flowing into campaign coffers. Then there was a set of unknown bundlers who gathered donations tied to Lian Wu Shao, whose family oversees the New World Mall in downtown Flushing, Queens. agents also searched two Bronx homes owned by a top Adams administration official, Winnie Greco, who helped organize fund-raisers at the mall for Mr. Adams.
