REUTERS/Alishia Abodunde/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Iraq has become the 74th member of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the multilateral lender said on Thursday, while Ghana and Senegal have also applied to join. Iraq first submitted its request to join the bank in 2018, and its shareholder status enables it to apply to become a recipient economy, which would unlock EBRD finance and policy support. "When the time comes, we are looking forward to starting work in Iraq, applying our expertise to developing its economy," EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso said in a statement. Renaud-Basso told Reuters that Senegal and Ghana had submitted applications to join the bank in the latest sign of its push into sub-Saharan Africa.

Iran has enough uranium enriched to lower levels for more bombs, but it denies seeking such weapons. Since then the IAEA has narrowed the list of sites to two but little other progress has been made. Bailey died “peacefully in his sleep” in Los Angeles, his wife, Carol Littleton, said in a statement distributed by the film academy. The moves sparked immediate backlash, including fears that the new category would relegate hits like that year's “Black Panther” out of contention for the best film award. A month later, the “outstanding achievement in popular film” award had been tabled. Bailey is survived by Littleton, a former Academy governor and film editor who was nominated for an Oscar for “E.T.

He had received the initial technical foul in the first quarter for using profanity towards the referees. “And he was ejected from the game, per rule, because two unsportsmanlike technical fouls, you are ejected from the game.”The official National Basketball Association (NBA) rulebook says: “If a player blatantly taunts an opponent, a technical foul shall be assessed. The ejection also drew headlines given the NBA’s recent commitment to ensuring its star players are on the court as much as possible. REUTERS/Ken Cedeno/Pool/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDUBLIN Nov 8 (Reuters) - A rise in geopolitical tensions across the world could aggravate already subdued growth in Europe and China and the spillover may alter the path of the U.S. economy, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook said on Wednesday. "We are not only watching subdued growth, we're watching the geopolitical tensions that we're all talking about, and that could change the outlook both in the United States and the global economy." Cook added that geopolitical tensions may in particular destabilize commodity markets and access to credit in the current higher interest rate environment. "Any shock could make the situation worse that we're already (in)... and could be destabilizing to commodity markets, could be destabilizing to the system of credit," Cook said. "More broadly, escalation of geopolitical tensions could lead to lower economic activity and increased fragmentation of global trade flows and financial intermediation, raising financing and production costs and contributing to more sustained supply chain challenges and inflationary pressures," Cook said.

"But I would say that an expectation of higher near-term policy rates does not appear to be causing the increase in longer-term rates." The interest rate on the 10-year Treasury bond has risen roughly a percentage point since the summer, breaching the 5% level late last month before dropping in recent days to its current level around 4.64%. The Fed has not raised its policy rate since July. Cook did not comment on her specific view of the Fed's policy rate, focusing instead on an overview of financial stability issues. In her overview of financial stability, Cook said she felt that the banking system had weathered the stresses of last spring, and "remains sound and resilient overall."

Excluding volatile food and energy costs, “core” prices likely also rose 0.3% in September, the same as in August. The Fed tracks the core figure in particular as a good indicator of the likely future path of inflation. That would mean that the Fed would probably keep its short-term rate higher for longer than investors had expected last summer. The result has been an increased supply of Treasuries, which means a higher yield is needed to attract enough buyers. Economists note that some wild-card factors might have caused inflation to come in higher or lower than expected in September.

Top real estate and banking officials are calling on the Federal Reserve to stop raising interest rates as the industry suffers through surging housing costs and a "historic shortage" of available homes for sale. The National Association of Home Builders, the Mortgage Bankers Association and the National Association of Realtors said they wrote the letter "to convey profound concern sharedamong our collective memberships that ongoing market uncertainty about the Fed's rate path is contributing to recent interest rate hikes and volatility." The groups ask the Fed not to "contemplate further rate hikes" and not to actively sell its holdings of mortgage securities at least until the housing market has stabilized. "We urge the Fed to take these simple steps to ensure that this sector does not precipitate the hard landing the Fed has tried so hard to avoid," the group said. The letter comes as the Fed is weighing how it should proceed with monetary policy after raising its key borrowing rate 11 times since March 2022.

The announcement put the spotlight on the kingdom's nascent nuclear energy efforts — Saudi Arabia has a small nuclear reactor, a research unit set up with the help of Argentina, that it has not yet put into operation. The Saudi energy minister did not comment on whether his country would also join the IAEA's Additional Protocol, which requires more thorough oversight including snap inspections. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in a recent wide-ranging interview with Fox News that if Iran developed nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia would too. U.S. assistance with a nuclear energy program is one of Saudi Arabia's key demands — but not everyone is happy about that. A coalition of 25 state governors announced a major push to reach 20 million deployed heat pumps by 2030, they said in New York City on Thursday. Heat pumps are energy efficient replacements for fossil fuel powered furnaces and air conditioners. Heat pumps can also save consumers money -- around $300 a year in the United States, according to the IEA. In places like Europe, where gas prices are higher, having a heat pump can save customers around $900 a year, the IEA says. Maine, for example, has been remarkably successful in installing heat pumps with its own legislative action.

As a result, they’re almost sure to leave their key interest rate unchanged when their meeting ends Wednesday. Claudia Sahm, a former Fed economist, said she thinks a “soft landing,” in which the Fed manages to curb inflation without causing a recession, remains possible. But she cautioned that inflation might stay higher for longer than the central bank expects. Or, she suggested, the cumulative effects of the Fed's 11 rate hikes could ultimately tip the economy into recession. “I expect we’ll need to hold rates at restrictive levels for some time,” said Susan Collins, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston.
