AI is very power-intensive — and its power needs are only set to rise in the coming years. Morgan Stanley Investment Management's Aaron Dunn says the "next big bottleneck" for the hyperscalers — which are doing a lot of the cloud computing for AI applications — is either power or fiber. And that's why Dunn is "pretty bullish" on utilities, naming one stock to play it: CMS Energy . "And so these utilities … have a very favorable opportunity to draw solid earnings growth and good returns for them," Dunn concluded. Their power consumption is set to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 11% through 2030, the bank said.

The Santa Clara giant's chips, known as GPUs, became the hottest property of the generative AI boom. In April last year, Zhou and her cofounder Greg Diamos, based in Palo Alto, brought their new startup, Lamini AI, out of stealth. It makes using AI models with GPUs like the H100 and Nvidia's new Blackwell chip, as simple as a plug-and-play system. Fortunately for them, after consulting with Diamos, according to Zhou, AMD was on its way to building a rival system that they would eventually test. it's indiscernible to customers to run Lamini on Nvidia and AMD GPUs," she explained.

My Apple Vision Pro nightmare

So when the Apple Vision Pro arrived, I was giddy with excitement to dive into the type of toy I'd dreamt of since childhood. The Vision Pro tries to answer the question of how you can use a computer without a mouse or keyboard. Apple Vision Pro marks the foundation of a new architecture of total digital isolation. Apple touted your ability to use the Apple Vision Pro to connect to your laptop, simulating a screen for your device. In the end, I followed the path of so many other Vision Pro early adopters and became an early returner.

I think Jensen deserves one day a year when he can trace out a vision without a per share attached to it. Sure, plenty of people in line Saturday would, correctly I think, say to "own it, don't trade it." Sure, I was sweating "own it, don't trade it." When you read — a book, a traffic sign, a billboard, this article — how much do you really notice the letters? But even if you don’t really notice them, you might sense it if something has subtly changed. That’s a feeling some people have had in recent weeks when they turn on their Microsoft Word programs. After 17 years of Calibri as Word’s default typeface, many users suddenly found themselves typing in a new typeface called Aptos. Letters are letters, but for designers and typography fans, they matter a lot.

The gloves are off among Silicon Valley CEOs

Silicon Valley CEOs are doing battle in public. AdvertisementThe Silicon Valley elite have been at each other's throats a little more than usual lately. AdvertisementThe latest example of this came this week when Mark Zuckerberg derided Apple's Vision Pro headset in an Instagram video. The Vision Pro is a direct competitor to Meta's Quest Pro but Zuckerberg does not appear concerned for now. “If you go back to the PC era, Microsoft’s open model was the winner, and in this next generation Meta is going to be the open model, and I really want to make sure that the open model wins out again.”Zuckerberg has good reason to be on the offense.

Meta said Wednesday that Broadcom CEO president Hock Tan and philanthropist and former Enron executive John Arnold are joining the company's board of directors. Tan has been leading the semiconductor giant since 2006, giving him extensive international experience working in computing infrastructure technology. "As we focus on building AGI, having directors with deep expertise in silicon and energy infrastructure will help us execute our long term vision," Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement. The technical backgrounds of the incomers contrast with former Meta operating chief Sheryl Sandberg, who recently said she would step down from the company's board. Tan and Arnold join a board that includes former PayPal Executive Vice President Peggy Alford, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, Dropbox CEO Drew Houston, former U.S. deputy secretary of the treasury Robert M. The Meta CEO on Monday posted a video review of Apple’s Vision Pro, the new rival mixed reality headset to Meta’s Quest 3. “Alright, guys, so, I finally tried Apple’s Vision Pro,” Zuckerberg begins in the video, which was posted to his Instagram. Zuckerberg also throws several other jabs at the Vision Pro in an effort to talk up his own product. Meta also has a more advanced, and more expensive, headset option called Meta Quest Pro. At least for now, most consumers probably aren’t going to buy either the Quest 3 or the Vision Pro.

The future for Apple's Vision Pro looks promising despite Wall Street's muted enthusiasm. Wall Street doesn't expect the Vision Pro to drive a ton of revenue at first though. Bank of America estimates the Vision Pro could add 46 cents per share to earnings-per-share (EPS) within the next five years. "We tested the Vision Pro and walked away positively from the overall extremely unique and immersive experience," BofA analysts wrote in a Monday research note. While it'll take time, the Vision Pro has the potential to boost sales and earnings in the future.

Elon Musk last week announced his company Neuralink has implanted its first chip in a human test subject. AdvertisementInterest from potential test subjects is rather slim, as is: just 2% would "definitely" consider getting a computer chip implanted in their brain "within the next year," below the margin of error for the poll. Overall, just 5% of respondents would at all consider getting a chip in the next year. Men were more than three times as likely as women (13% vs 4%) to be down for a commercially produced brain chip eventually. All told, 19% of respondents who said they read Dune would get a commercially available brain chip, and 11% of respondents who said they read Dune would get one this year.
