The most diverse battleground state, Nevada has more registered nonpartisan voters than Democrats or Republicans, and Democrats have been winning presidential elections here by smaller and smaller margins. The relatively small number of electoral votes make it less likely to be decisive.

Polls close Tuesday night, but it's unclear when we'll know the results of the 2024 election. Some states' election laws allow for some votes to be counted before polls close; others do not. Here's where things stand — and what to watch for on election night. 7 p.m. — Polls close in Georgia, where a winner could be declared by late Tuesday night. AdvertisementThe winner must get at least 270 electoral votes — a majority of the 538 total.

Voting has now wrapped up in all seven swing states and most others. But no swing states have been called, and the race will hinge on their results. Bomb threats roiled polling places in swing states, including Georgia, Arizona and Michigan. Though the election is by no means over, Mr. Trump is showing strength, winning states like Texas and Florida easily. Democrats will have to run the tables in the Republican states of Ohio and Montana to maintain their one-seat control of the Senate.

Exit polls are conducted by Edison Research for the National Election Pool on behalf of a consortium of media companies: CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC. The polling locations were themselves selected through random sampling, meaning the resulting interviews should be representative of Election Day voters across the state or nationally. In addition to the national exit poll, there are also exit polls conducted in specific states with key, competitive presidential or down-ballot races. Even so, exit polls are still polls, with margins for error – which means they’re most useful when treated as estimates, rather than precise measurements. That’s particularly true for the earliest exit poll numbers, which won’t yet have been adjusted to match the final election results.

Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump reacts at a rally in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. September 13, 2024. Shares of Trump Media & Technology rose on Election Day Tuesday, with traders betting a second Trump presidency would give the business prospects of the Truth Social operator a boost. Year to date, Trump Media, which is majority-owned by Trump, has nearly doubled. However, it has struggled recently, as Vice President Kamala Harris appeared to gain momentum heading into Election Day. Trump Media shares have seen huge retail trader inflows in the week's leading up to the election and has been the most-discussed stock on Reddit page WallStreetBets, which gained popularity during the GameStop fueled stock meme fad of 2021.

ArizonaThe Arizona Abortion Access Act would enshrine the right to an abortion in the state constitution up to fetal viability, around 22 to 24 weeks into pregnancy. Abortion rights supporters say the moment served as a stark reminder of what could come if reproductive rights aren’t enshrined in the state constitution. ColoradoThe Colorado Right to Abortion and Health Insurance Coverage Initiative would enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution and approve the use of public funds for abortion. In Nevada, an amendment must be passed in two successive general elections before it can be added to the state constitution. While proponents have focused on abortion rights, opponents have used the measure’s broad nature to raise concerns about transgender and parental issues.

Legal experts told NBC News that the disclosure could have legal fallout for Musk across multiple jurisdictions under laws designed to protect consumers from deceptive practices. Chris Gober, a lawyer for America PAC, made the disclosure at a hearing about the giveaways. Elon Musk awarded Kristine Fishell a $1 million check at a town hall in Pittsburgh on Oct. 20. Typically under state law, “this is actually bread and butter stuff for them,” he said in a direct message. The Justice Department, which had warned Musk’s super PAC that its offer may run afoul of federal election law, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

3 takeaways from pre-election voting

CNN —Pre-election voting is winding down across the country, with many states wrapping up in-person early voting over the weekend. While overall pre-election voting is down, in some states more voters chose to vote in person early than they did in 2020. However, total pre-election voting in both states was still lower than in 2020 due to significantly fewer people choosing to vote by mail. Republicans grow their pre-election vote shareRepublicans have made up more of the pre-election vote than they did in 2020. The Trump campaign made more of an effort this year to encourage Republicans to vote early and by mail, a major shift from messaging against pre-election voting in 2020.

GOP senators and top aides say the race could go either way. Scott, who is a McConnell critic, has been more willing to fall in line with Trump than Cornyn or Thune over the last several years. Both Thune and Cornyn are closely politically aligned with the longtime GOP leader. Asked if he would like to get more public endorsements from GOP senators, Thune said he is not asking anyone to do that. They also point out his remarkable ascent – he defeated then-Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle in 2004 and is now on a path to possibly becoming GOP leader.

Trump was closing his third presidential campaign Monday with the same anti-immigration rhetoric that he used to launch his first White House bid. “Four years of Kamala have delivered nothing but economic hell for the American workers,” Trump said. It was a long discussion that is contrary to previous messaging from Trump and his campaign, which has encouraged people to vote early. The only thing that matters is getting to 270 electoral votes through the Electoral College. Meanwhile, 219 electoral votes seem to be leaning in the former president’s direction. Closing off the ‘blue wall’Looking at those battleground states, Harris has the easier path than Trump to getting to 270 electoral votes. She could win by corralling Michigan (15 electoral votes), Pennsylvania (19 electoral votes) and Wisconsin (10 electoral votes). But the bottom line is this election is most likely going to come down to five states … or maybe six.

They show that neither Harris nor Trump have broken out in the swing states. Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin will likely determine whether Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump wins. The final set of New York Times/Siena College surveys of each state showed Harris narrowly leading among likely voters in Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, while Harris and Trump are tied in Michigan and Pennsylvania. Biden in 2020 won Georgia by a razor-thin margin, while Trump narrowly won North Carolina that year. Harris is winning female voters by 16 points (57% to 41%), according to the final NBC News poll.

CNN —The tumultuous 2024 election is ending with a contrast that encapsulates America’s fateful choice on election eve. The vice president also proposes reforms to improve the lives of working Americans — but hers are less revolutionary than Trump’s. If she loses Pennsylvania, Harris would need a combination of other swing states, including Georgia, Nevada and Arizona, where poll averages also show no clear leader. But the findings, which suggested a shift toward Harris from the previous Iowa Poll in September, also showed the vice president with a strong advantage among women. If such a pattern is repeated nationwide, the vice president could be headed to victory if she can limit her deficit to Trump among White males especially.

When asked why, a Trump campaign official put it bluntly. “If there’s one state that could bite you in the a--, it’s North Carolina,” the official said. Yet he’s made a plan of returning to North Carolina each day until the election. While Harris campaign aides on social media chided Trump for holding a defensive posture in a state that hasn’t gone blue since 2008, the Trump campaign cast the repeated visits to North Carolina as an aggressive, cover-all-the-bases strategy. “North Carolina, I’m here to ask for your vote.

Trump spent Friday in Michigan and Wisconsin, Saturday in North Carolina, and today will be in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Georgia. While her husband, President Joe Biden, has been a scarce presence on the campaign trial, the first lady has been one Biden in demand for the Harris campaign. Harris’ team has deployed the first lady to all seven battleground states in the last month. Harris and Trump are campaigning in swing states as they make their final appeals to voters. AdvertisementWith Election Day on Tuesday, the end is in sight for what has been a contentious US presidential race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. It wasn't long before Harris began to narrow the gap between the Democrats and the GOP in the presidential race. Now, millions of women live in states with near-total abortion bans, while millions of other women live in states where abortion rights have been strengthened. In the closing days of the race, Harris has heavily emphasized the issue, which also helped Democrats in the 2022 midterms.

That’s when Election Day turns into election night, and each state starts reporting its vote totals. Virginia is an example of a state that usually has a geography-driven red mirage early on election night. Another factor that can cause vote mirages is partisan differences by vote mode — mail ballots, early in-person votes, Election Day in-person votes, and so on. This will produce a vote mirage if there are partisan differences between the earliest-returned mail ballots and the later-returned ones. As Election Day votes were reported in the next few hours of election night, the size of the blue mirage shrunk to about 3.5 points.

The Trump campaign and surrogates began filing lawsuits the very same day, challenging the results on a variety of grounds well before the final votes were counted. In Arizona, voters and the Trump campaign filed a lawsuit alleging thousands of people in Maricopa County had their ballots disqualified because of ink-bleed caused by Sharpies. In Wisconsin, Trump filed a lawsuit alleging widespread voter fraud and demanding a recount, which ultimately reaffirmed Joe Biden’s victory in the state. Some officials pointed to Colorado as a strong example of planning for potential chaos surrounding the electors meeting.
