Younger generations spend more on groceries than other categories, a McKinsey report says. The firm asked over 4,000 people, from baby boomers to Gen Zers, about the categories they intend to splurge on this year. Groceries ranked highest for millennials and Gen Zers, outpacing restaurants, bars, travel, beauty and personal care, apparel, and fitness. It's a notable shift from 2018 when older generations like baby boomers and Gen Xers still spent more on groceries than millennials. It surveyed baby boomers to Gen Zers, not baby boomers to Gen Xers.

Urban Outfitters, the young adult retailer known for its alternative, vintage-inspired styles, learned this the hard way. Urban Outfitters is now staging a turnaround, with the ambition of finding the success of rivals like Abercrombie & Fitch. But while Urban Outfitters may be trying to pull off a turnaround at the same scale is Abercrombie’s, the action points of both differ. Urban Outfitters, meanwhile, has maintained its youthful appearance without doing enough to market toward the high schoolers and college students of today. Urban Outfitters did not return a request for comment on the marketing strategy behind the lower prices.

Wealthy millennials and Gen Z are redefining philanthropy
  + stars: | 2024-10-10 | by ( Robert Frank | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Wealthy millennials and Gen Zers are redefining the world of charitable giving, seeing themselves more as activists than donors, according to a new study. Older donors give from of a sense of responsibility. Those over the age of 44 were more than twice as likely to give due to "obligation" than younger donors. Those under 43 were more likely to cite self-education and the influence of their social circle as drivers of their philanthropy. The younger wealthy are still building their fortunes and inheriting their wealth, so they're more likely to give their time and help fundraise.

Some 81% of teens ages 13 through 17 feel pressure that leaves them feeling badly about their game plans, achievements, appearances, social lives, friendships and/or how informed they are about issues, the survey found. Social media makes the pressure worse for most teens, but some said social media can also help lessen it. The survey, which was conducted in fall 2023, found that 27% of teens said they were burned out. (The survey of 1,545 teens ages 13 to 17 had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.) How adults pressure kids“Adults — parents, teachers, coaches — are clearly contributing to some of the negative pressures teens feel, even if we don’t mean to,” Weinstein said.

You don't need to know exactly how you'll use your retirement savings — instead, focus on timing. I recently spoke with my financial planner, Liz Schieck, about investing and saving for retirement. I asked her what she's hearing from clients, particularly millennials and Gen Z clients, about best practices. Current trends around investing and retirementMany new clients at Schieck's firm first reach out because they want to discuss saving for retirement. Schieck believes that you don't always have to know what you're saving for.

A divide exists about reaching financial goals between confident and uncertain savers. Inflation and market volatility are major obstacles to achieving retirement savings goals. AdvertisementThere's a divide in America between the savers and investors who feel confident they're on track to achieve their financial goals and those who think they're not. Respondents cited inflation as the biggest obstacle to reaching retirement goals, followed by stock-market volatility, expenses, credit card debt, and child education. For example, if you're 35 with an income of $100,000, you should have between $100,000 to $200,000 set aside for retirement.

Where are Gen Z's tech founders?
  + stars: | 2024-10-09 | by ( Amanda Hoover | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +10 min
So where are Gen Z's tech founders? Gen Z founders and would-be founders are stepping into a vastly different tech world from that of their predecessors — a world where launching a unicorn is far more difficult, and publicly scrutinized, than it was for the garage-band generation of Jobs and Gates. Gen Z is coming of age in an era when the same Big Tech companies are diffuse and dominant. In other words, millennial founders ran so that Gen Z founders could walk. Perhaps we won't see Gen Z founders standing before a crowd and unveiling their latest shiny products anytime soon.

Why the U.S. is covered in strip malls
  + stars: | 2024-10-08 | by ( Shawn Baldwin | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
More of those consumers are going to strip malls. While some outlets like traditional malls have struggled to retain shoppers, foot traffic to strip malls is booming. Annual visits to strip malls surged 18% last year compared with prior to the pandemic, according to data compiled by analytics company RetailStat. The U.S. has more than 68,000 strip malls from coast to coast, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers. But strip malls face criticism for being eyesores in their communities, adding to environmental problems and contributing to the demise of traditional business districts.

AdvertisementIn short, boomers love stuff, and not just their stuff. They held on to their parents' stuff when they inherited it, and a lot of them are sitting with their kids' stuff in their attics now, too. The market value of the object and the sentimental value don't always go hand in hand. "I often emphasize the idea that the market value of the object and the sentimental value don't always go hand in hand," he said. Remember, it takes a lot of stuff to live a full life — and it's hard to let go of it.

I spent some time alone after things ended, but by the end of 2012, I was ready to re-embrace online dating. Within a few years, my fellow millennials and I were reportedly spending 10 hours a week on dating apps. Increasingly, it feels like dating apps make things more monotonous and cumbersome to incentivize us to pay for upgrades. And while dating apps' cost in terms of harassment, threats, and violence is paid disproportionately by women, its financial cost is disproportionately paid by men.
