The Swedish automaker said it now aims for between 90% and 100% of its car sales to be fully electric or plug-in hybrid models by 2030. "I think a lot of manufacturers are obviously going through this process [of delaying electrification targets] at the moment. The U.K., for instance, introduced a mandate that requires 22% of new car sales this year to be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs). The mandate, which aims to reduce the number of polluting vehicles on the road, will rise annually until it reaches 100% of new car sales by 2035. BMW trimmed its profitability guidance for 2024 on Tuesday, pointing to technical problems that led to delivery stops for cars as well as persistently sluggish demand in the key Chinese market. The German carmaker said it expects its margin of earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) to be between 6% and 7% for 2024, having previously guided for a figure between 8% and 10%. In a statement, Continental said that only a "small proportion" of the braking systems it produces and supplies to BMW will be partially replaced because of an electronic component that may be impaired. The company also forecasts a slight decrease in deliveries, it said, without providing a specific figure, after having previously expected an increase. The technical actions related to the integrated braking systems impact over 1.5 million vehicles and will result in additional warranty costs in a high three-digit million amount in the third quarter, the company added.

Volvo Cars, which is owned by China's Geely Holding, had been among the first legacy carmakers to promise a complete switch to EVs. The firm said its long-term aim remains to become a fully electric carmaker. The target replaces a 2021 pledge for Volvo Cars' lineup to be fully electric by the end of the decade. The move means Volvo Cars follows in the footsteps of other industry players in scaling back its EV ambitions. Shares of Volvo Cars traded more than 4% lower Wednesday.

Ric Tapia | Getty Images Sport | Getty ImagesSports team owners benefiting from soaring team values are also facing new pressure from two of the oldest certainties in American wealth: death and taxes. With the average age of team owners rising, and team values skyrocketing into the billions, owners and leagues are increasingly focused on how to ensure smooth ownership transitions to the next generation of buyers. Succession and taxes have become especially important in the National Football League, where the average age of team owners is now over 72 and team values are all surging. The average NFL team is now worth $6.49 billion, and no team is valued at less than $5.25 billion, according to CNBC's Official 2024 NFL Team Valuations. So owners have to be planning for the potential for more punitive estate taxes in the coming years.

EV fast chargers – the big tall units that look like major appliances – aren’t generally designed to completely fill an EV’s batteries. A line of EVs wait to charge at Electrify America chargers in East Brunswick, New Jersey, on July 6. At 10 of the busiest EV fast charging stations in California, Electrify America has enacted a strict limit. There can also be other legitimate reasons a driver may want to charge to 100% at a fast charger, said Barrosa. Cases like these are why Electrify America probably won’t institute an overall charging cap at charging stations near major highways, he said.

A light rain fell at the Zurich airport one Sunday morning in January 2023 as Sarah Kate Ellis made her way from a seat in Delta’s most exclusive cabin to a waiting Mercedes. It was there to chauffeur her to the Swiss Alps, where she and her colleagues would stay at the Tivoli Lodge, a seven-bedroom chalet that cost nearly half a million dollars to rent for the week. Ms. Ellis, who was en route to the World Economic Forum in Davos, doesn’t run a Wall Street bank or a high-flying tech start-up. She is the chief executive of the nonprofit organization GLAAD, one of the country’s leading L.G.B.T.Q. London CNN —The value of some of the world’s best-known luxury companies is plunging as Chinese consumers pull back on spending, with even the most exclusive brands feeling the pain. The rout seems to be accelerating, with those sales tumbling 14% in the second quarter, according to results published late Tuesday. “For now, the (luxury) market remains volatile as investors reassess the once-held belief that luxury brands are a safe-haven investment, shielded from broader economic downturns,” Jochen Stanzl, chief market analyst at CMC Markets, told CNN. “The Chinese market contracted slightly; the market situation in the premium and luxury segment in China remained weak,” the company said. China’s economy grew 4.7% year-on-year in the second quarter of the year, according to official data released last week, missing economists’ expectations and marking the weakest growth since the first quarter of 2023.
