TJ Maxx is TK Maxx in Europe. Hannah Docter-LoebTJ Maxx is an American discount store dating back to the 1970s, and the company opened its first European location in the 90s. But the UK was already home to a discount store called TJ Hughes, which opened in the early 1900s. TJ Maxx changed its European-branch name to TK Maxx to avoid confusion. My first week, my boots broke, and my TK Maxx replacements have lasted me the entire trip.

The Candidates Tournament to select a challenger for the World Chess Championship will be held in April in Toronto. The ensuing chaos led to criticism of the International Chess Federation, the game’s governing body, also known as FIDE. Six of the eight players in the Candidates Tournament were decided before December, leaving two places up for grabs and five players vying for them. One spot was for the player with the highest rating on FIDE’s list on Jan. 1 who had not already qualified. In an attempt to secure the remaining slots, some players entered last-minute or obscure tournaments that FIDE had not anticipated they would participate in.

The American Federation of Musicians (AFM), a union representing musicians across the entertainment industry, will begin negotiations Monday on a new contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The union said it is seeking a deal to better reflects the current state of streaming media. The AFM is also seeking AI protection, increased wages, health care improvements, improved working conditions and residual payments for streaming content. According to the AFM, musicians who record on soundtracks make 75% less on streaming content due to less residual income. And the AFM is not the only union in the entertainment industry which might strike in 2024.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the visa restrictions and mentioned, among others, the marginalization of groups like the LGBT community in Uganda and civil society advocates in Zimbabwe. In June, the U.S. State Department imposed visa restrictions on Ugandan officials after the passage of the law. The State Department also previously put visa restrictions on Ugandan officials following the country's 2021 elections, which it called "flawed." Blinken also announced a new visa restriction policy for those he said were undermining democracy in Zimbabwe. "Anyone who undermines the democratic process in Zimbabwe - including in the lead-up to, during, and following Zimbabwe's August 2023 elections - may be found ineligible for U.S. visas under this policy," Blinken said.

Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will also visit the sprawling COP28 compound, where more than 70,000 people from across the world have gathered for the two-week conference. Clinton was due to take part in an event on women and climate change. COP28 will also see an appearance from former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, who shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change for their work to increase public knowledge about global warming.
