Some leading business executives say they don’t know quite what to think of Vice President Kamala Harris. She has been meeting with groups of corporate executives roughly every two months at her residence in Washington, according to two executives who have met with her. When a state dinner was held for President William Ruto of Kenya in May, Ms. Harris spoke with businesspeople about economic topics including access to labor and worker training, one attendee said. And a month earlier, she attended an event at the Colette Club on Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan arranged by Charles Phillips, a business executive and a longtime backer. Before about 30 Black business leaders — a group with which she has tried to build particularly strong relationships — Ms. Harris spoke for roughly 40 minutes, without notes or a teleprompter, on economic topics including job creation, inflation and global trade, and then took questions.

LONDON — Britain's King Charles III is set for a bumper £45 million ($58 million) pay raise after profits at the sovereign's public estate more than doubled, according to official records. Profits of The Crown Estate — a portion of which funds the monarchy — increased 148% from £443 million in 2022-23 to £1.1 billion ($1.4 billion) in 2023-24, an annual report showed Wednesday. The Crown Estate, the national portfolio of historical and commercial land-holdings, is owned by the British monarch but managed independently and its revenues are given to the government. In exchange, the monarchy currently receives 12% of Crown Estate profits — a proportion calculated on funds two years in arrears. Staffing the royal household cost £27.9 million in the last financial year, while property maintenance was £47 million amid continued renovations of Buckingham Palace.

Nairobi, Kenya CNN —Protesters in Kenya have vowed “a total shutdown” as they seize control of Nairobi’s main international airport on Tuesday as deadly anti-government demonstrations intensify, now entering their sixth week. At least 50 people have been killed during the protests and more than 400 injured, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights. The cabinet nominees still need parliamentary approval, but they’re likely to be confirmed since Ruto’s party holds the required majority. On Sunday, the president expressed frustration with the protests, declaring that “enough is enough” after failed attempts at dialogue. “They keep saying they’re faceless, formless.

Kipyegon and a string of top athletes are continuing to prove that elite sport and motherhood are not incompatible. “[Jamaican sprinter] Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce came back after maternity leave, and [US runner] Allison Felix, and we met in Tokyo at the 2021 Olympic Games,” she recalls. At those Games, Felix won a gold and a bronze and Fraser-Pryce won silver to become the most decorated 100m sprinter in Olympic history. A 26-year-old hair braider named Josephine Owino disappeared one morning last month in the sprawling shantytown of Mukuru Kwa Njenga in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, after going out suddenly to see someone who had just phoned. Ms. Owino’s younger sister, Peris Keya, was desperate to find her, and went to three police stations pleading for help. But nothing happened until Ms. Keya said she had a startling dream one night: Her sister appeared, led her up a hill and begged her to search in a pool of water. The dump was searched only because Ms. Keya, 24, beseeched some local men to help, paying them for the grisly task. On Monday, the Kenyan police announced that they had arrested a suspected serial killer, who they said had confessed to killing 42 women, including his own wife, in the past two years, and throwing them into the dump.

The vessel left Haiti on Wednesday carrying over 80 migrants, and was headed to Turks and Caicos, the IOM said. Forty-one survivors were rescued by Haiti’s Coast Guard, it also said. The number of migration attempts by boat from Haiti have risen since then, according to IOM data. But chaos in the country has not stopped neighboring governments from repatriating Haitian migrants by the tens of thousands. The United Nations Security Council-backed Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission, led by Kenya, is now beginning operations in Haitian capital Port-au-Prince.

VCG/Getty ImagesAfrica’s space industry could be worth $22.6 billion by 2026, up from $19.5 billion in 2021, according to the consultancy Space in Africa. Better data from Earth observation could unlock more than $2 billion in value for Africa, according to a 2021 report by the World Economic Forum. More than 20 countries now have national space programs, and African nations budgeted more than $400 million for the sector in 2024, according to Space in Africa.

A few weeks ago Mr. Ruto was barricaded inside his official compound in Nairobi, Kenya, while thousands of young Kenyans marched on the streets. During general elections in 2022, most young Kenyans didn’t even register to vote. It is clear Mr. Ruto senses his tenure is in danger; on Thursday he sacked all but one of his cabinet secretaries, bowing to public pressure. Mr. Ruto is a protégé of Daniel arap Moi, the dictator who ruled Kenya between 1978 and 2002. From the beginning of his political career, Mr. Ruto appeared to share his mentor’s disregard for democracy.

Across the world, wildlife crimes – including animal trafficking and poaching – are on the rise and are a major threat to the planet’s biodiversity. Often, he says, wildlife crimes happen in remote areas without witnesses and first responders can accidentally disrupt the scene and contaminate evidence. If the Biden administration had its way, far more electronic chips would be made in factories in, say, Texas or Arizona. Those places may not be the first that come to mind when people think of semiconductors. But administration officials are trying to transform the world’s chip supply chain and are negotiating intensely to do so. The core elements of the plan include getting foreign companies to invest in chip-making in the United States and finding other countries to set up factories to finish the work. Officials and researchers in Washington call it part of the new “chip diplomacy.”

Like a globe-spanning tornado that touches down with little predictability, deep economic anxieties are leaving a trail of political turmoil and violence across poor and rich countries alike. In Kenya, a nation buckling under debt, protests over a proposed tax increase last week resulted in dozens of deaths, abductions of demonstrators and a partially scorched Parliament. At the same time in Bolivia, where residents have lined up for gas because of shortages, a military general led a failed coup attempt, saying the president, a former economist, must “stop impoverishing our country,” just before an armored truck rammed into the presidential palace. And in France, after months of road blockades by farmers angry over low wages and rising costs, the far-right party surged in support in the first round of snap parliamentary elections on Sunday, bringing its long-taboo brand of nationalist and anti-immigrant politics to the threshold of power.

Read previewUniversal basic income has made giant strides from its origins as a utopian vision toward becoming economic reality. Basic income trials have been conducted in countries as varied as Kenya, Finland, India, and Canada. Proponents of UBI say it reduces poverty, strengthens the social safety net, promotes health and happiness, and combats the stigma around welfare. Basic income recipients in a Finnish trial reported higher life satisfaction, improved health, and lower levels of depression and loneliness. An open questionUniversal basic income remains a largely theoretical idea that could have significant — and unpredictable — impacts on wealth inequality, human welfare, labor markets, and entire economies.

So far, the only part of Earth AI seems hell-bent on dominating is the power grid. AI data centers are doubling the pace of electricity demand growth in the US to the extent that demand could exceed supply in just two years without action, according to Bernstein Research. The potential shortfall could mean higher prices for the computing power AI developers of all sizes are clamoring for, along with ample opportunity for investors willing to build up supply. How are AI companies planning aheadIt's not just the total power needed for AI computing infrastructure, it's the unique cadence of the power need and the cooling AI chips require. Amazon is clearing some of these hurdles by colocating some data centers with nuclear power sites.
