Read previewAmerica's wild, multi-year shopping spree has come to an end — and retailers who got used to Americans dropping cash on just about everything are in a tough spot. US retail sales came in stronger than expected in July, with Americans spending more overall compared to the prior month, according to Census data. Around 40% of consumers said they planned to pare back spending on accessories, home decor, jewelry, and furniture, per McKinsey's survey. We're now back in an environment where good retailers, strong brands that offer compelling value … will benefit," Siegel said. In the meantime, that could mean more pain for retailers, Siegel said, speculating that many were caught by surprise by the shift in consumer sentiment.

In a house with two small kids, clutter was a given. Our house wasn't dirty, but it was full of things we didn't need — clothes that no longer fit, threadbare towels, unused kitchen utensils, toys we'd outgrown. The idea of throwing or giving away things you no longer needed felt wasteful and foolish, so she just kept everything. Even today, getting him to toss broken or unused items takes an act of Congress. My upbringing informed how I see clutter as an adultGrowing up in a house like this colored how I see clutter and cleaning.

For Google, the focus turns to its ad tools, which are part of the company’s $200 billion digital ad business. In the first antitrust case, the court found that Google violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act, which outlaws monopolies. The company’s M&A strategy “set the stage for Google’s later exclusionary conduct across the ad tech industry,” the Justice Department alleges. Google has long fought back against claims that it dominates online ads, pointing to the market share of competitors including Meta. It will argue that buyers and sellers have many options especially as the online ad market has evolved.

New York CNN —Meta’s Oversight Board has found that the phrase “From the River to the Sea,” used to express Palestinian support, did not break the company’s hate speech policies. The Board said it reviewed three cases involving the use of “From the River to the Sea” on Facebook and said that all appeals to remove the content were closed without human review. Those users then appealed to the Board, which exists for users to challenge Meta’s appeals process on Facebook, Instagram or Threads. In Germany, using the slogan “From the river to the sea” is now a criminal offense. The slogan used in the cases had wide reach through Meta’s platforms.

But until now, Garner hasn’t given a full tour inside her Westside Los Angeles property. She had searched for a home with privacy, but the ones she toured all felt too “grand,” she explained. It’s a house fully in use, too, rather than siloed off — a rarity for a house with multiple pre-teens and teenagers. “I am happy that I feel like we use the space really well, and that the kids are all over the house,” Garner said. I’m 36 — when do I have to give up crop tops?
  + stars: | 2024-09-01 | by ( Jacqui Palumbo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
CNN —As a pre-teen in Y2K, the (small) shadows of crop tops loomed large. In a decade when unforgiving low-rise jeans were the norm — and criticism over women’s bodies perfunctory — crop tops were not casual, easy wear; any softness of the torso was considered an aberration. Now that I’m 36, crop tops have become an unlikely staple in my wardrobe, and I’m reluctant to let them go. Can I still wear crop tops in my forties? I can also keep wearing crop tops for as long as I feel like it — after all, whenever I see a woman a generation ahead of me owning her personal style and at ease with herself, it gives me something to aspire to.

Thomas is among what retirement experts are calling "silver squatters" — adults in their mid-50s who are even more woefully unprepared than some boomers, despite being about a decade away from retirement. Donald Trump calls for mass deportations during a visit to the southern border. Harris spoke about her upbringing in San Francisco and her “unlikely journey” to becoming a prosecutor, senator and vice president. Anti-Trump sentiment was also a unifying theme this week, with both progressive and conservative speakers warning of the consequences if former President Donald Trump wins in November. Harris hammered the point in her speech, telling the crowd: "In many ways Donald Trump is an unserious man, but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious." Trump made the comments in an interview with NBC News during a visit yesterday to the U.S-Mexico border in Arizona.

A new path to better sleep: Evening exercise breaks
  + stars: | 2024-08-23 | by ( Dana Santas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
Now, a small efficacy study published July 16 in the journal BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine suggests a simple yet effective strategy to improve sleep duration: incorporating short resistance, or strength training, exercise breaks in the evening. The findings were compelling: The participants slept an average of 27.7 minutes longer when they took regular exercise breaks compared with when they sat uninterrupted. “Our research found that interrupting evening sitting time with short bursts of light intensity exercise improved sleep duration and did not disrupt sleep quality,” Gale added via email. “Adding quick, simple and light resistance exercise breaks to your evening routine could be a simple way to improve your sleep and health,” he said. Better sleep could be just a few short exercise breaks away.
