The president’s speech was also a reminder that time is not on the side of the civilized world. “We all need to do more,” Biden said of the SDGs due to be met by 2030 but which are seriously off track. We have to stand up to this naked aggression today and deter other would-be aggressors tomorrow,” Biden said. As the president was speaking, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky could be seen listening intently and applauded at the pledge of support. Leveraging the absence of other world leaders to his advantage seems to be working for Biden.

CNN —A federal jury in Washington, DC, has begun deliberating the criminal contempt of Congress charges against former Trump White House trade adviser Peter Navarro. He is the second ex-aide to former President Donald Trump to be prosecuted for his lack of cooperation with the committee. Prosecutors told the jury during closing arguments Thursday that Navarro “made a choice” not to comply with a February 2022 subpoena. Quick moving trial with limited defenseNavarro joined the Trump White House to advise on trade and became a well-known face of the Trump administration, while earning a reputation for sparring behind the scenes with his White House colleagues. From a distance, the whole site could be mistaken for an old mining camp you might come across in Montana or Idaho. They were listening to the last sigh of the Big Bang, which birthed the universe 13.8 billion years ago and is detectable now only as a faint, omnipresent hiss of microwave radiation. Up until then, scientists had debated whether the universe even had a beginning; maybe it was timeless. As important, the discovery brought the beginning of time into the lab, where it could be pinched, squeezed and dissected. The cosmic microwave background offered a new window into the nature of reality, one into which astronomers have been peering intently ever since.

CNN —CNN’s future is coming into greater focus. Last week, CNN announced a sweeping overhaul of its lineup, establishing its all-important prime time roster while also making several other key programming moves. And on Thursday, the outlet announced the launch of CNN Max, a new service that represents the beginning of a streaming future for the channel following the abrupt shuttering of the nascent CNN+. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, there continues to be an active search for the next leader of CNN, following Licht’s dismissal. And while CNN Max might not be the luxurious streaming lifeboat that CNN+ might have been, it is a lifeboat — and some form of a vessel is better than none at all.

But I’ve no idea where those students will be 10 or 20 years down the road. And perhaps the greatest tragedy of all the drama around college admissions is the degree to which it obscures that transcendent truth. They’re honing the best kind of opportunism. They’re honing the worst kind of wastefulness. Where, in all the chatter about the Ivy League and all the debate about meritocracy, is the necessary attention to that?

Darya Komarova | Moment | Getty Images'The dots need to be connected for consumers'Exposure to our older selves is only part of the process of making decisions for retirement, experts say. While the TikTok filter has recently made it popular to look at our future selves, this type of application has been around since the early 2000s, said Joseph Coughlin, director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology AgeLab. Once people see an image of their older selves, they tend to feel differently about their future decisions. Successful, lasting behavioral changes typically come with incentives to work toward, such as saving money or exercising, Coughlin said. Pairing the videos with prompts to save more money or invest more toward retirement may be effective, according to UCLA's Hershfield.

Mr. Smith is not the first special counsel to investigate Mr. Trump. Mr. Smith, by contrast, faces no such limits given that Mr. Trump is no longer in office. Mr. Mueller said little when faced with a barrage of falsehoods pushed publicly by Mr. Trump and his allies about him and his investigative team. During Mr. Trump’s arraignment in Miami in June, Mr. Smith sat in the gallery, closely watching the proceedings. Some in the courtroom suggested he stared at Mr. Trump for much of the hearing, sizing him up.

With streaming disrupting the economics of the TV and film industries, it doesn’t help to alienate your audience with political posturing like Disney has with its refashioning of classic fairy tales including the upcoming 'Snow White.' Images: Disney/Shutterstock/Bloomberg News/Getty Images for CAA Composite: Mark KellyThe debate about “Oppenheimer” has veered between fascination for a past when men wore linen suits to build a bomb and fear for a future in which the world is nuked to a crisp. The debate in the West—and, notably, Japan—has been civilized for our bad-tempered times, with historians, philosophers and “fact checkers” chewing intently on the film’s abundant fodder. Only in India has the movie sparked outraged dissent, with calls by officials from its Hindu nationalist government for it to be censored.

As stocks look to cap a winning month and enter a seasonally weak period for investors, Raymond James highlighted one big risk to the market performance for the rest of the year, in a note to investors over the weekend. Wall Street is coming off of a winning week after the latest blast of earnings showed stronger-than-expected performance from the likes of Meta and Alphabet . "It's clear that core inflation is coming down fast with the Fed funds rate 2-3% above these figures," said Raymond James equity strategist Tavis McCourt. Commodity prices were mixed last week. Silver declined about 1.5% for its worst week since June 23, while copper gained 2.8%.

It also happens to be the most important skill every therapist needs to be good at their job: reflective listening. But there's one powerful tool we teach that can be used not just in your intimate relationships, but with friends, family and even coworkers. The goal of reflective listening isn't to solve the problem for the other person, but rather for them to feel validated and heard. Begin the conversation with the person who has the object; the other person doesn't get to talk until they're handed it. CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. The United States and China, the world's largest economies, are on divergent monetary policy paths that are spelling some headaches. Beijing has so far cut rates in June and pledged "targeted and coordinated policy, which would be implemented in a timely manner." Complicating the macro watch for everybody, Nomura said other central banks in Asia could start cutting rates even earlier than the Fed.

In the best of examples, it can look to the future as well. But in the last decade or so, a small group of winemakers have focused intently on the region’s past. In short: They are producing some of the most exciting wines in the world. But the industry has been declining since the 1980s as consumers in Britain, the biggest market for inexpensive sherry, began to lose interest in those mediocre sweet wines. Many producers went out of business and the land planted to vines dwindled from roughly 70,000 acres to around 15,000.

Wendy's will pilot its new AI drive-thru tech this month at some locations in the Columbus, Ohio, area. The hesitancy to discuss any generative AI implementation is understandable. That said, we think that generative AI opportunities at Starbucks are still worth considering. This is where we think there's a clear opportunity for margin improvement as generative AI adoption goes mainstream. There are going to be a lot of opportunities to invest in to play the adoption of generative AI outside of tech.

A page of Cormac McCarthy might sometimes be taken for poetry or scripture: the lean lines; the sparse punctuation; the jagged right-hand margin. They must have flown as they were riding up. If they’s a dead cow in the pasture will the rest of the cattle stay there? McCarthy, like every writer, belonged to his time, even as, perhaps more intently than most writers, he labored to create work that would outlast it. Not that they remotely resemble one another: Each represents a singular sensibility and an original voice, a personality on the page that is unmistakable and inimitable.

Meet Joni Mitchell’s Joni Jam Crew

Out here, the blue highway signs that usually serve as mile markers instead display the types of apple trees you’re driving by: Fuji, Gala, Honeycrisp. I made an eager pilgrimage to this corner of the world over the weekend (along with a bunch of other Joni Mitchell fans) to see Mitchell headline the Gorge Amphitheater at her first ticketed concert in more than 20 years. But the so-called Joni Jam at the Gorge was proof that she’s spent the last year — on the brink of turning 80, no less — working hard to strengthen her voice. Like the Newport set, the Joni Jam was communal by nature, spearheaded by Mitchell’s friend Brandi Carlile and designed to have the feel of the musical gatherings Mitchell frequently hosts in her living room. That made the show feel relatively egoless: Though there were some headline-worthy names present, there were no dramatic, please-welcome-to-the-stage entrances or bowed departures.

Fund managers in the latest BofA Global Research survey named shorting the dollar as the market's third "most crowded" trade. The dollar is "in a very messy transition from bull market to a bear market," said Aaron Hurd, senior portfolio manager, currency, at State Street Global Advisors. Hurd expects the dollar to remain buoyant over the very short term, but decline steadily over the next few years. Most investors believe the dollar will likely remain elevated until U.S. data turns decidedly weaker, allowing the Fed to cut rates. "The dollar strength is entirely related to the fact that U.S. data is actually pretty good," said Alvise Marino, a strategist at Credit Suisse.

With the Lakers up by eight points early in the second, James had a clear run to the basket after being found by Rui Hachimura in transition. Jack Dempsey/APLeBron blowing the easy dunk was just one of the many uncharacteristic errors made by the 19-time All-Star in the Game 2 loss. After the game, James reflected on the 0-2 hole the Lakers find themselves in and said that it wasn’t the end of the world. To go with four steals, five assists and 10 rebounds, Murray scored an incredible 37 points in the huge win.

Turkey election rivals both claim early lead, but runoff is likely

Supporters of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan attend a rally ahead of the May 14 presidential and parliamentary elections, in Istanbul, Turkey May 12, 2023. Turkey appears headed for a presidential election runoff, with the parties of Tayyip Erdogan and opposition rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu claiming the lead. Early results put Erdogan comfortably ahead, but as the count continued his advantage eroded, with a runoff on May 28 beckoning. Ankara's opposition mayor Mansur Yavas said a count by his party suggested Kilicdaroglu was ahead with 47.42%, while Erdogan had 46.48%. His government's slow response to a devastating earthquake in southeast Turkey that killed 50,000 people added to voters' dismay.

And while the average loudness of speakers didn't change across bad or good conversations, the "good" talkers varied their decibel levels more than the "bad" talkers did. The machine found that women rated as better Zoom conversationalists tended to be more intense. Good conversationalists are those who appear more engaged in what their partners are saying.
