When Robert Herbst returned to his hometown about 30 miles north of New York City in 1992, he wanted his children to be immersed in the lush greenery of his childhood. But over the decades, he noticed more trees coming down to make way for bigger houses. Mr. Herbst, a lawyer, and other like-minded residents of Mamaroneck, N.Y., view the vanishing trees as a serious threat in the era of climate change. “We should be protecting trees for our own survival,” said Jacob Levitt, a dermatologist who lives in Mamaroneck. “It’s suicidal not to do it.”But some residents say they should have the right to remove any and all trees on their properties to make way for more sunlight or a home expansion, or simply because they want them gone.

I reduced my 'biological age' by 10 years — here's what that meansWoods and her husband hiking in Patagonia. AdvertisementIt drives me crazy when people wear these kinds of one-off "biological age" stats like some sort of badge of honor. Regular checkups, blood tests, and scans at the doctor are one thing, but I wouldn't pay 300 pounds just to brag about a biological age result. HRT: One of the most pharmacological ways I've changed my biological age since I started this journey is hormone replacement therapy for menopause. I'm now convinced that hope and happiness will outdo any pill when it comes to improving biological aging.

But some experts wonder why you'd even prescribe this drug, which has been shown in study after study to be lackluster, at best. There is maybe one thing Paxlovid can sort of doThe one thing Paxlovid seems to do is prevent a few hospitalizations in very high-risk patients. Related storiesPfizer's big trial of more than 1200 patients, out in April, suggested that maybe taking Paxlovid can prevent a few hospital admissions among the frailest, most vulnerable patients, but it's tough to say. In the control group (not taking Paxlovid) that number was 10. But other research from the UK, out in May, showed absolutely no difference in mortality when comparing hospitalized patients taking Paxlovid to those who weren't on the drug.

Imagine a comprehensive review of research on a treatment for children found “remarkably weak evidence” that it was effective. Now imagine the medical establishment shrugged off the conclusions and continued providing the same unproven and life-altering treatment to its young patients. It’s been three months since the release of the Cass Review, an independent assessment of gender treatment for youths commissioned by England’s National Health Service. Nor, she said, is there clear evidence that transitioning kids decreases the likelihood that gender dysphoric youths will turn to suicide, as adherents of gender-affirming care claim. Scandinavian countries have been moving away from the gender-affirming model for the past few years.

There are also concerns about 78-year-old Republican nominee Donald Trump's fitness for office — registered voters are split on whether he still has the cognitive skills for this job. "I have a cognitive test every single day," he added, alluding to the requirements of his job. Trump continues to boast that he "aced" the basic cognitive tests he took over four years ago, when he was president. These cognitive tests only rule out disease. Doctors themselves have resisted mandatory cognitive tests for older physicians — in part because it's ageist, but also because memory tests don't tell you whether someone is good at their job.

Eye doctors in Boston have started to notice a small but worrisome uptick in cases of a rare type of sudden blindness among patients taking semaglutide. (Semaglutide is the active ingredient in two Novo Nordisk drugs: Ozempic for type 2 diabetes and Wegovy for obesity.) Rare, and notableThe number of patients on semaglutide who developed NAION was tiny: Out of more than 16,000 eye patients in Massachusetts included in this six-year retrospective investigation, only 37 people on semaglutide developed NAION. Patients with diabetes and high blood pressure have always been at an increased risk of developing eyesight issues. (Novo Nordisk is working on another, separate study, testing whether semaglutide might be useful in treating diabetic retinopathy.)

Brisbane, Australia CNN —Buying a vape just got harder in Australia with the introduction of some of the world’s toughest anti-vaping laws that limit the sale of vapes with nicotine to pharmacies. From Monday, users will need to present a doctor’s prescription to a pharmacist to buy vapes, and the choice will be limited to three flavors: mint, menthol and tobacco. Dozens of countries have banned disposable vapes, but with the ban on vape sales in shops, service stations and other small retailers, Australia has introduced “world leading” laws, according to the government. Adults will be able to buy vapes in pharmacies, without a prescription – but the devices may be hard to find after some leading pharmacy chains declared they would refuse to stock them. Despite the rising cost of cigarettes, some fear that young vapers – having been locked out of the vape market – will turn to cigarettes to get their nicotine fix.

As spring turned to summer this week, extreme heat caught much of New York City by surprise, sending concerned residents to prepare for rising temperatures earlier than usual, while various city agencies, civic organizations and businesses have also been adjusting their seasonal calendars. As climate change extends the traditional summer and batters the city with spontaneous rain storms, many New Yorkers are discovering that they are not quite in sync with the weather anymore and have to rethink how to adapt to the passing months. Look no further than this week: The city has already activated its first heat emergency plan of the year, but school remains in session, pools have yet to open and public beaches are still staffing up with lifeguards. For the most part, New Yorkers made modest adjustments to their schedules, postponing outings or being cautious if they pressed ahead, exercising and running errands, for example, during the morning and the evening — the coolest parts of the day.

Read previewWith weight-loss drugs like WeGovy and Ozempic dominating many of today's consumer healthcare conversations, there's a mounting concern for a particularly vulnerable group: children. In January 2023, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended that healthcare providers offer weight-loss medications, in addition to lifestyle adjustments, to treat obesity in children 12 and older. And in addition, there was limited evidence on weight loss maintenance after medications were discontinued in children," Nicholson said. These injectable drugs have proven successful as weight-loss interventions for adults with obesity, early research shows. Nicholson said clinicians have used lifestyle interventions, like nutrition and exercise plans, to help children with obesity lose weight and reduce risk factors like hypertension, diabetes, and liver disease.

The market has been on a tear in 2024, driven higher by robust corporate earnings and the artificial intelligence boom. If inflation is cooling down but the Fed is still expected to keep its key lending rate higher for longer, what does that mean for the stock market? The data will tell us that, but I think the big takeaway for us is [inflation] going in the right direction. Do you expect some of the cash that’s on the sidelines to enter the stock market?
