When Warren Buffett, the ultimate buy-and-hold investor, sells a stock, it often sends a negative signal about the underlying business and maybe even the entire industry. "We're more reluctant to sell them than most people," Buffett said of his large positions at Berkshire's annual meeting in 2009. Bank of America sales Many top holdings in Berkshire Hathaway's equity portfolio are decades old — Buffett has held Coca-Cola shares since 1988 and American Express since 1991. Buffett said bank failures in 2008 during the Global Financial Crisis , and again in 2023, lessened confidence in the system, made worse by poor messaging by regulators and politicians. At the time, Buffett foresaw more bank failures down the road , but stuck with his Bank of America investment, partly because he personally negotiated the original deal and admired CEO Brian Moynihan.

David Tuckett, an uncertainty researcher, told BI that dismissing doubt eventually "leads over a cliff." He said the success of elite investors like Warren Buffett may be largely down to luck, not skill. AdvertisementEven the smartest minds in finance and tech don't know for sure what the future holds, and even the most successful investors may have gotten lucky, one expert says. Elon Musk responded on X that "Buffett is already preparing for this outcome," ostensibly suggesting Warren Buffett will offload stocks too if Donald Trump secures a second term. And while polls may be tight, the money race isn't — Harris is outspending Trump by approximately $5 million every single day, according to the most recent federal filings. Harris is outspending Trump in ad buys in every single swing state, Bloomberg reported based on data from AdImpact. A new ETF uses AI to emulate Warren Buffett's investment style
  + stars: | 2024-09-22 | by ( Yun Li | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Investment startup Intelligent Alpha is working on launching the Intelligent Omaha ETF , with the ticker AIWB, that relies on AI to emulate the Berkshire Hathaway CEO's investment philosophy and create a portfolio of 25-30 stocks that it thinks Buffett might buy. It remains to be seen how deeply AI could understand Buffett's unique investing style that has evolved significantly over seven decades. All about AI Intelligent Alpha has been testing its Buffett strategy for six months and the portfolio AI puts together would overlap Berkshire's by anywhere between 30 to 60%. "The vision for Intelligent Alpha is to build the AI-powered BlackRock," Clinton said. "There are two big pillars, serving retail investors [through Registered Investment Advisors], and then there's serving institutional investors."

And so it is with Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway slashing its holdings in Apple and Bank of America in recent months. Buffett himself has indicated in recent years that he doesn't see an abundance of compelling value on offer in the public markets. But this in itself isn't much of a clue about future market prospects or the macroeconomic moment. Borgato says he believes "Buffett wants to leave a Berkshire behind that requires [fewer] future cash allocation decisions, not more." I'm not a buyer of the "cash on the sidelines" case for expecting money market assets to drain into stocks.

A Miami man is facing charges after authorities said he teamed up with a California man in a scam to steal and launder over $230 million in cryptocurrency. It appears the arrest is connected with an FBI raid of a waterfront home in the area of Northeast 83rd Street and N. Bayshore Drive. After they fraudulently gained access to victims’ cryptocurrency accounts, they transferred the funds into their possession and laundered the proceeds, authorities said. Lam and Serrano spent the laundered cryptocurrency proceeds on international travel, partying in nightclubs, luxury automobiles, watches, jewelry, designer handbags, and rental homes in Los Angeles and Miami, authorities said. Prosecutors said the investigation into the scam is ongoing.

Top bosses at Berkshire Hathaway are usually tight-lipped about their market outlook, but recent investment actions from the executives are saying a lot. News broke earlier this week that Ajit Jain, the conglomerate's insurance chief for nearly 40 years, sold more than half of his Berkshire stake worth $139 million. That marked the biggest sale of Berkshire stock by the 73-year-old vice chairman of insurance operations since he was hired by Warren Buffett in 1986. He believes it would be "value-destroying" if he overpaid for Berkshire shares. But the magnitude of the sales could also suggest a bearish attitude toward the market and stock valuations.

Occidental Petroleum shares have dropped 29% since mid-April, impacting Warren Buffett's stake in the company. Ajit Jain, Warren's Buffett's insurance chief and top executive, sold more than half of his stake in Berkshire Hathaway , a new regulatory filing showed. The 73-year-old vice chairman of insurance operations dumped 200 shares of Berkshire Class A shares on Monday at an average price of $695,418 per share for roughly $139 million. That left him holding just 61 shares, while family trusts established by himself and his spouse for the benefit of his descendants hold 55 shares and his nonprofit corporation, the Jain Foundation, owns 50 shares. Monday's sale represented 55% of his total stake in Berkshire. "This appears to be a signal that Ajit views Berkshire as being fully valued," said David Kass, a finance professor at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business.
