Veronica Shanklin left her top marketing job to care for her grandmother with dementia in May 2013. My grandmother, then 82, who I called "Mama Nell," had become aggressive and physically lashed out at my mom. They'd shared a home in my native Dallas since Mama Nell was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease a few years earlier. I've established a nonprofit to help dementia carers like meMama Nell died in 2017 at the age of 86. At 30, I reluctantly bought a smartphone once life with my flip phone became too difficult. Despite the benefits of having a smartphone, I feel more isolated and like I rely on it too much. Having grown up in the age of cellphones, my flip phone felt more than good enough since I could call and text anytime, anywhere. I miss my flip phone, but there's no going backI now view my life in two distinct eras: before and after the iPhone. Life was simpler with my flip phone, but having a smartphone isn't all bad.
