The cause was a brain tumor, his son Ben said. Mr. Holden was writing the gossipy “Atticus” column — a frothy mix of politics and celebrity — for The Sunday Times in London when, in 1977, he was sent to cover Prince Charles’s visit to Canada to open the Calgary Stampede, a rodeo. The prince was sort of a dud assignment, but Mr. Holden made the best of it, even though the most interesting thing Prince Charles said to him was: “Married, are you? Fun, is it?”The column Mr. Holden wrote about the royal junket amused both Queen Elizabeth II and her son, now King Charles III, and Mr. Holden soon received a book deal to write a biography of Charles. Though he thought the subject was boring, the advance of 15,000 pounds was too large to turn down.

Since our shareholders are getting Chevron stock, we get to participate in the upside, and also get a higher dividend," he said. He added that Hess shareholders who keep their shares in their combined company will see their dividend rise from $1.75 to $6 per share following the close of the deal. Exxon and Chevron are keen on these deals because they want to avoid the risk of exploring unproven reserves as oil and gas become scarcer. Exxon and Chevron had $29.5 billion and $9.3 billion in cash, respectively, as of the end of June. New York CNN —Sheila Bair, who had a front row seat to the subprime mortgage meltdown, is worried today’s housing market is unsustainably hot. A housing bubble can form when prices rise to unsustainable levels. “I see much less speculation in the housing market today, thank goodness,” said Bair. ‘Dizzying heights’Legendary investor Jeremy Grantham shares Bair’s concern about a housing bubble. After a 21-month tech IPO freeze, the market has cracked opened in the past week. Chip designer Arm debuted last Thursday, followed by grocery-delivery company Instacart this Tuesday, and cloud software vendor Klaviyo the following day. They're three very different companies in disparate parts of the tech sector, but Wall Street's reaction has been consistent. Instacart popped 40% immediately after selling shares at $30. But the lack of excitement over the past week — amounting to a collective "meh" across Wall Street — is certainly not the desired outcome either.

Funding to European startups across the board dropped by almost 60% to $23 billion in the first six months of 2023, according to Crunchbase data. ElevenLabs, a London-based artificial intelligence startup founded by Google and Palantir alumni, pulled in $18 million at a $100 million valuation a year after it was founded. Mistral, another European startup set up by ex-Facebook and DeepMind staffers, raised $113 million a month after it was founded. AI has been of particular interest to investors with similar hype surrounding a deal for London-based text-to-voice startup ElevenLabs. Industry stakeholders believe that teams springing from already successful companies to set up their own startups will be very attractive with some predicting startups founded between 2022 and 2024 primed to be very in demand in the future.

Coin Metrics measures a week in crypto, which trades 24 hours a day, from the 4:00 p.m. "The part that could upset the crypto market is if interest rates stay higher for longer, which disappoints the expectation that the rate could be lowered in the first half of 2024. Trading data also shows long-term investors haven't been easily shaken by the recent weakness. This tells us that despite the price volatility and recent downdraft in prices, long-term holders are unwavering. He added that while it's unclear what exactly accounts for traders' resilience, maturing crypto investors are becoming more "aware of the cycles associated with bitcoin's halving and are expecting it to repeat, leading to price appreciation."

Bitcoin remains stuck in an environment of low liquidity, thin trading volumes and few, if any, catalysts to take it higher. After the recent correction, however, most downside risk is behind us, according to JPMorgan. As a result, we see limited downside for crypto markets over the near term." KKR pours itself a thirst-quencher deal Down Under

Trading information for KKR & Co is displayed on a screen on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York, U.S., August 23, 2018. On Friday the U.S. asset manager said it had agreed to sell its 80% stake in Australian Venue to fellow private equity firm PAG six years after buying the pubs group. That means KKR has poured itself a tasty – and possibly frothy - internal rate of return. Assume KKR funded half the original acquisition with debt, and it increases to 32%. KKR’s local private equity boss David Lang and his team deserve a drink.

It was August 2021, during the waning months of the frothy startup bull market, and Fin Capital was on the ascent. The message was a phishing attack — Fin Capital had been hacked. But there is dispute over how Fin Capital handled the attack and its aftermath. Still, as other firms have sharply pulled back on investing in the downturn, Fin Capital has done the opposite. It's unclear whether the whistleblower complaints that former Fin Capital employees filed with the SEC are being investigated.

"The S & P is not quite there, but we would be very surprised if it doesn't follow the NDX's lead." On top of that, some are worried that another real estate crisis in China may be brewing. "It's been almost two years since China Evergrande Group, once China's largest real estate developer, shocked the financial markets by defaulting on $340 billion in debt. Since then, the Chinese real estate market has been in a serious slump," wrote Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research. Investment in real estate fell 8.5% y/y during the first seven months of this year."

The Frothy Saga of the Jacuzzi Family
  + stars: | 2023-08-11 | by ( Saskia Solomon | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Candido Jacuzzi didn’t set out to turn his last name into a global brand. Nor did he intend to power a business which, though it created the family fortune, nearly tore them apart. This empire starts, and ends, with family — seven brothers, to be exact, Candido being the seventh. The Jacuzzis were, at the turn of the 20th century, a large clan in Casarsa, a farming commune in Northern Italy. Growing up on this hilltop surrounded by vineyards, the siblings began work early and wore wooden shoes, saving handmade slippers for Mass.

China's property market is a huge part of the economy, but it's now in a deep slump. This measure was introduced in August 2020 to limit the amount of money property developers could borrow. Other Chinese real-estate developers ran into similar issues, and the sector started to default on its bond payments. In the background, there were concerns that China's property crisis could spill over into the broader domestic and global economy. In 2022, China's economy grew 3% — well below its official 5.5% target, intensifying the drag on the property sector.

Stocks could continue to gain momentum in the week ahead as traders turn their attention to earnings results after the past week's softer inflation news. The major benchmarks are headed for a positive week Friday after encouraging consumer and wholesale inflation in June cemented the likelihood that the Federal Reserve is closer to the end of its rate-hiking campaign. Some market participants expect this period could mark the trough for earnings, and urge traders to pay more attention to forward guidance. "And that's a great sign for the market and market health."
