The idea behind the Ryder Cup task force that was formed after the 2014 matches was to build some continuity among the U.S. teams. CNN —As Europe’s victory at the Ryder Cup was confirmed, one fan couldn’t help but make a splash – quite literally. Tommy Fleetwood ensured that Europe would triumph against the USA on a tense final day when he took the 16th hole of his singles match against Rickie Fowler. The excitement proved too much for some, including a spectator who was green-side for the all-important moment. The fan darted across the hole and made a beeline for the water hazard, removing – and then dropping – his cap before taking the plunge. Maddie Meyer/PGA of America/Getty ImagesThe celebrations followed Europe’s 16.5-11.5 victory in Rome, meaning the USA’s quest for an away Ryder Cup triumph stretches to 30 years.

GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — The reachable par-4 16th at Marco Simone was designed to decide the Ryder Cup, and that’s exactly what happened. As he walked down to the amphitheater-like green, Fleetwood was serenaded with “Tommy, Tommy” chants by the massive crowd both lining the fairway and filling a three-story hospitality structure. While the next Ryder Cup that Europe hosts will be at Adare Manor in Ireland, Ryder Cup Europe seems intent on returning to the continent for 2031 or 2035, with interest from Austria and Spain. Attending their fifth Ryder Cup, Lyren and his wife, Betsy, wore American-flag themed red-white-and-blue overalls. “That’s kind of what we use it for.”Jessica and Eric Minor, a couple in their 40s, flew in from Dallas for their first Ryder Cup and enjoyed the fan craziness.

But I am so proud of my 12 guys," said Europe skipper Luke Donald, whose team seized control of the 44th Ryder Cup on Friday with a 4-0 sweep of the morning foursomes. The 32-year-old Fleetwood, who picked up three points from his four matches, had not expected to be centre of attention. Northern Ireland's McIlroy, playing his seventh Ryder Cup, beat dogged rookie Sam Burns 3&1. McIlroy, Europe's talisman, ended up with four points to take his career Ryder Cup tally to 18, and said it made up for the pain of Whistling Straits. But Fowler drove his tee shot into water at the par-four 16th and when Fleetwood found the green, Europe could breathe easy.

Europe’s win streak at home in golf’s biggest team event will now extend beyond three decades. CNN —Europe survived a Sunday scare to regain the Ryder Cup, holding off a late US fightback to win 16.5 - 11.5 in Rome. The confirmation sparked euphoric scenes among Team Europe and tears for captain Luke Donald. A thrilling fourballs session was going the way of the Americans as they led in three matches deep into the back nine. But Viktor Hovland, Jon Rahm and veteran Justin Rose ensured Europe won it 2-1/2 to 1-1/2, with three matches that went all the way to the 18th. "That was my moment there on the 18th -- I've made us a lot of points but I haven't had many moments like that so that was immense," Rose, playing his sixth Ryder Cup, said. Hovland was majestic as he and Aberg, the first Ryder Cup player not to contest a major, proved too hot for Homa and Harman to handle in match two. Matt Fitzpatrick, playing with McIlroy, earned his first Ryder Cup point in stunning fashion with four birdies and an eagle in an early blitz that Morikawa and Schauffele never recovered from, losing 5&3.

Twenty states have likewise voted for the GOP presidential nominee in all four of those contests. That means 40 of the 50 states, or 80%, have voted the same way in four consecutive presidential elections. In the presidential elections of 2012, 2016 and 2020, though, the states where the margin of victory landed within four points of the national vote total dwindled. Eventually a Democratic choice to write off Florida and Ohio could provide a tactical benefit for the GOP presidential nominee.

Georgia is, of course, also the place where Donald Trump called and asked a Republican to “find” votes. And Georgia is the place where the Fulton County district attorney, Fani Willis, filed criminal charges that led to the indictment of Mr. Trump and 18 others for a conspiracy to subvert the 2020 election. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of Mr. Trump’s most enduring defenders representing one of the country’s more conservative districts, posted an image of an American flag upside down, signaling distress. And in one second-floor wing of Georgia’s State Capitol, a pair of Republican executives most likely shed few tears. “The 2020 election in Georgia was not stolen,” Mr. Kemp said last month on social media in response to Mr. Trump’s claims that he would unveil a report demonstrating the state’s election was fraudulent.
