Fresh protests roiled Bangladesh on Saturday, just weeks after a deadly government crackdown, as demonstrators returned to the streets in what appeared to be the biggest numbers yet and escalated their demands to include the prime minister’s resignation. In its efforts to break last month’s student-led protests, which started peacefully but turned violent after demonstrators were attacked, the government detained student organizers, rounded up about 10,000 people and accused tens of thousands more of crimes such as arson and vandalism. A curfew and communications blackout quieted things down, and the students won a significant concession from the courts on their initial demand to end a preferential quota system for public-sector jobs. But the crackdown by the security forces of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina — which led to the deaths of more than 200 people — seems to have made many Bangladeshis even angrier and broadened the movement’s scope.

CNN —A day after getting the election subversion case against Donald Trump back, the presiding federal judge rejected another effort by the former president to have the case dismissed. Earlier this summer, the Supreme Court granted Trump sweeping immunity for official acts as president, and the case, brought by special counsel Jack Smith, is now back in the hands of Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington, DC. The judge also found that Trump’s suggestions that Biden attempted to influence prosecutors was unfounded. In her ruling Saturday, Chutkan rejected Trump’s arguments that the case in Washington was brought only because Trump pleaded not guilty to charges of mishandling classified information in Florida — a case that was recently dismissed. “Defendant’s decision to enter a not guilty plea in Florida does not establish a realistic likelihood that this prosecution was vindictive,” Chutkan wrote.

In response to the El Paso mass shooting, MALDEF created a new program to expand its litigation and advocacy work to include anti-Latino hate crimes, including discriminatory policing policies. America’s Voice, an immigrant advocacy group, has been tracking what it calls the normalization of the invasion and great replacement rhetoric by congressional members. In the five years since the mass shooting in El Paso, 165 members of the current Congress have amplified the replacement theory and invasion rhetoric, said Zachary Mueller, America’s Voice senior research director, citing a report done by the group. Also, in this year’s first seven months, congressional members have pushed the invasion and great replacement theory more than 650 times in social media accounts and filed 11 pieces of legislation using the “invasion” rhetoric. "Use of invasion rhetoric needs to be seen as a national problem.

A drunk driver who killed four people and injured nine more when he crashed his SUV into a Long Island nail salon was driving 78 mph at the time of the crash, prosecutors said Thursday as the driver pleaded not guilty to a multitude of charges that include murder and vehicular manslaughter. Steven Schwally, 64, entered the pleas to a 38-count indictment for the deadly June 28 crash at the Hawaii Nail & Spa store in Deer Park. Prosecutors said in court papers that Schwally purchased two 375-milliliter bottles of Montebello Long Island Iced Tea at 11 a.m. on the day of the crash. Investigators determined that he was driving 78 mph (125 kph) one second before the crash, prosecutors said. Prosecutors said Schwally had no regular address and had been living in hotels for more than a year.

Wall Street to Big Tech: Is AI ever going to make money?
  + stars: | 2024-08-02 | by ( Clare Duffy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
New York CNN —There’s been one big question on the minds of Wall Streeters this tech earnings season: When will anyone start making actual money from artificial intelligence? But Big Tech still has relatively little to show for all their billions spent in terms of significant revenue gains from AI or profitable new products, and investors are starting to get antsy. Shares of both Google and Microsoft dipped following their earnings reports, a sign of investors’ discontent that their huge AI investments hadn’t led to far-better-than-expected results. She added: “Gen AI is where we’re much earlier … We don’t expect our gen AI products to be a meaningful driver of revenue in ’24. As an example of just how long it can take AI products to come to fruition, take Tesla’s AI-based “full self-driving” technology.

After all, the last time a guy named Shapiro had been elected governor of Pennsylvania, he had years earlier anglicized his name to Shapp. “I’m not aware of how his position on Israel differs from the other potential vice presidents,” Hawaii Sen. Brian Schatz, who is both Jewish and a proud progressive, told CNN. Of the VP’s choices, Shapiro is the one who stands out as the most divisive and could put a stop in everyone being on the same page,” said one Jewish Democratic operative. But I will say his attacks, this might surprise you, don’t bother me personally,” Shapiro said at the time. But calling what’s coming at Shapiro “pure antisemitism,” Rep. Dan Goldman, a New York Democrat, warned against that defensive way of thinking.

Elizabeth M. Allen, a veteran diplomat and political operative, is stepping down from her position as the U.S. under secretary of state for public diplomacy to take on a senior role in Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. On Saturday, Ms. Allen will become the chief of staff to Ms. Harris’s running mate, whose selection is expected to be announced in the coming days, according to a person familiar with the matter. Ms. Allen, who has held other State Department posts, is a rare figure to transition between the worlds of diplomacy and national politics. During the 2020 campaign, she was the communications director for Ms. Harris’s vice-presidential operations. Colleagues said Ms. Allen played a larger, intangible role as a key member of Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken’s core team.

Whether or not Mr. Kelly is the V.P. choice, the qualities he brings — sobriety, consistency and military experience — are welcome contributions to the future of Democratic politics. Mr. Kelly’s strengths as a running mate and a potential governing partner go deeper than the NASA logo. “We looked for three main criteria,” said Chris Hadfield, a retired astronaut who helped write the selection guidelines at NASA. “Healthy life habits; the proven ability to learn complicated things quickly; and the ability to make good decisions of extremely high consequences.”

AdvertisementYet when and how ICE agents use deadly force has long been shrouded in secrecy. ICE agents shot people in public places, such as traffic intersections and strip-mall parking lots. Yet in over half of the shootings we identified, ICE agents never made an arrest. But Ramos still became one of dozens of people on the receiving end of an ICE agent's deadly force. A significant number of the shootings documented in the logs happened while ICE agents were off-duty or in plain clothes.

Even as Donald J. Trump is trying to distance himself from the Heritage Foundation-led Project 2025, his running mate’s contribution to a new book by the project’s principal architect is complicating his efforts. “Dawn’s Early Light,” a forthcoming book by the Heritage Foundation’s president, Kevin D. Roberts, calling for a “second American Revolution,” features a foreword by Senator JD Vance, the Ohio Republican whom Mr. Trump tapped as his running mate in July. “In the fights that lay ahead, these ideas are an essential weapon,” Mr. Vance writes in his introduction, which was obtained and published online by The New Republic on Tuesday. The book is set for publication in September. Mr. Vance announced in June that he had written the foreword for Mr. Roberts, whose think tank became an influential bastion of conservative policymaking during Ronald Reagan’s presidency and enjoyed exceptional influence during Mr. Trump’s time in office, providing a staffing pipeline for his administration.

Behind the scenes, the conservative justice sought to put a thumb on the scale for states trying to restrict how social media companies filter content. The states enacted their laws in 2021 and, with variations, restricted the ability of social media platforms to filter third-party messages, videos and other content. Greg Abbott signed that state’s measure, he said, “there is a dangerous movement by social media companies to silence conservative viewpoints and ideas.” In Florida, Gov. Kagan added a footnote to her majority opinion buttressing that point and reinforcing Barrett’s view. But, despite Alito’s protest, Kagan had a majority signing her decision, which, at minimum, offers lower court judges a strong indication of the framework the high court majority would use in future online challenges.

In 2017, a stronger vaccine, Shingrix, became available. “While research into whether vaccines affect dementia risk continues, people should be aware that there are other factors that have definitively been linked to an increased dementia risk. This study also found that the new shingles vaccine was associated with a larger degree of benefit than the older one. Although the findings are intriguing, the association needs more study before researchers can know for sure that the shingles vaccine is definitively behind the benefit. So for the time being, the best reason to get a shingles vaccine is still to avoid the misery of shingles.

For years, China ramped up green energy production capacity, becoming the global leader in renewable energy manufacturing, from solar to wind to battery. In a second Trump administration, prices for imports from China are likely to surge for green energy producers. The view is that First Solar will benefit the most within the U.S. solar sector from greater trade restrictions, according to Baird. Ultimately, that may curtail the number of green energy startups and private companies that want to go public, Schleif said. "It's been really hard to compete with Chinese companies in any way, shape or form."

When pollution meets politics, efforts to clean up the air in the world’s big cities can bring risks as well as wins. London and New York got a taste of it this week. London this week published data showing that the air is cleaner since its mayor, Sadiq Khan, made the politically contentious decision to expand fees on polluting cars and trucks driving into London. The air is measurably cleaner in outer London, where opposition to the expansion was robust. “The decision to expand the ULEZ was a difficult one, but the right one,” he said in a briefing with reporters, using the acronym for the low-emission zone.

CNN —When she leaves Barbie Land for the real world, Barbie must keep up with her regular health maintenance, which includes seeing her gynecologist. Those examples and others inspired the researchers to look into the “Barbie” effect on interest in women’s reproductive health. But the authors noted that an increase in seeking gynecologic care may not be accurately captured in search trends. It’s possible that the searches were from people who don’t need gynecologic care, the authors note in the study. “I feel like (the scene) starts the conversation — anything that starts the conversation about reproductive health tends to cause folks to want to explore that and go in and take a look at what they should be doing about their own health,” Irobunda said.

In the 1960s, many public pools were filled with concrete or destroyed to avoid allowing Black Americans to swim in them. In fact, park managers opted to shut down the Historic Audubon Park Natatorium in New Orleans, the largest public pool in the South, rather than see it integrated. Black children ages 10-14 years drown in swimming pools at a rate that is almost 8 times higher than White children. Third places are incredibly important for public health and wellbeing however because they give people a place to socialize and build community. We also need better national data about our public pool system that goes beyond project- or funding-specific tracking.
