ANCHORAGE, Alaska — In a storyline better befitting a melodrama than a popularity vote, Grazer won her second Fat Bear Contest Tuesday by defeating the male behemoth that killed her cub this summer. This is where Grazer’s cub died after it slipped over the waterfall and was killed by Chunk, perhaps the most dominant brown bear on the river. Bear 402, a female bear that was supposed to be a contestant in this year’s contest, was killed by a male brown bear the day the brackets were expected to be released. Her other surviving cub from her third litter placed second two weeks ago in the Fat Bear Junior contest. “His physical success is evident in his bulky form.”Adult male brown bears typically weigh 600 to 900 pounds in mid-summer.

And this year, embattled mama bear 128 Grazer has retained the crown of the most popular fat bear in the annual online competition, which is observing its 10th anniversary this year. The rushing water in the Brooks River swept her cubs toward Chunk, currently the most dominant male bear on the river. The surviving cub, called 128’s Spring Cub, was a contender in the 2024 Fat Bear Junior contest held in late September. “For bears, fat equals survival.

JuvenescenceFasting, low-carb, high-fat diets like keto, and drinking ketone esters can all prompt ketones to circulate in a person's blood. Ketone ester drinks don't require the liver to convert fat into ketones, which is what happens with fasting and the keto diet. "If you were wanting to lose weight, you want to be burning your own fat and turning it into ketones," Stubbs said. Ketone drinks don't do that. But she also says that any eventual geriatric recommendation for ketone esters isn't likely to be one-size-fits-all.

Fasting may lead to better blood sugar control and more fat loss, suggests a study on metabolic syndrome. The condition includes high blood sugar as well as high levels of body fat, and increases the odds that someone will develop heart disease and diabetes. However, participants who did intermittent fasting lost a bit more weight, and had a much bigger drop in their body fat percentage, since more of the weight they lost was fat instead of muscle. Such scrutiny is the product of diet culture, the influences and messages that affect how we eat, based on cultural pressure to attain an ideal body type, experts say. And with increasing changes in access to food, exercise and health care, people’s weight is becoming more out of their individual control, she added. A 2019 meta-analysis showed that more than 80% of weight loss is regained after five years. One idea is that diet culture keeps a check on power. Comments and criticisms you make about other people’s bodies also influence the way you feel about your own body, Conason said.

While it's important to have a diet of nutrient-rich foods, how you eat them is essential to getting the most benefit. And when you eat plant foods high in iron with foods rich in vitamin C, you're able to absorb more iron. "People who don't get enough calcium and vitamin D throughout life have an increased chance of having thin and brittle bones (osteoporosis) in their later years," according to Kaiser Permanente. And "your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium." The source of vitamin D you'll receive from the sunlight can help you get more calcium, Perez noted.
