CNN —Ancient ancestors of Native Americans, known as the Clovis people, mostly ate mammoths and other large animals during the most recent ice age, according to a new study. Since the young boy was still nursing, the team of scientists from American and Canadian universities were able to infer his mother’s diet. A woolly mammoth model is seen during installation at the American Museum of Natural History in October 2023. They also compared it to other omnivores and carnivores, finding that her diet was most similar to a scimitar cat that primarily hunted mammoths. “The largest mammoth sites in the USA and Central Europe contain the remains of mainly younger animals… possibly the easiest to kill,” Haynes said.

In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin took a breather after catapulting above $100,000 for the first time a day earlier, and even sceptics now expect a crypto-friendly Trump administration to feed an extended rally. "So long as the unemployment rate doesn't fall back to 4.0%, markets should be comfortable about leaning towards a rate cut this month." For now, the European Central Bank isn't expected to react to heightened political turmoil in Europe when it meets next week. The euro bloc currency was on track to post a loss this week, the fourth in the last five weeks. But comments from typically dovish policymaker Toyoaki Nakamura that he's not opposed to rate hikes helped push the currency higher on Thursday.

Tech giants have increasingly set their long-term sights on nuclear power to fuel their artificial intelligence ambitions. Getting there will require more natural gas along the way — an incentive to stay invested in driller Coterra Energy . Indeed, the Facebook and Instagram parent on Tuesday released a request for proposals from nuclear energy developers. Meta said its goal is to add between 1 to 4 gigawatts of nuclear power in the U.S. beginning in the early 2030s. That will allow for more natural gas produced in the U.S. to be shipped around the world, particularly into Europe.

AdvertisementI went on a passenger train in Italy from Sicily to Naples that boarded a ferry to cross a strait. The train ride wasn't very expensive at about $30 and our journey took almost six hours. The views of the coast were amazing and the ferry ride was a special experience. I was recently even able to take a train from Naples to Sicily, which can be tough to access. Since there's no bridge connecting Sicily to the mainland, the train travels part of the way by ferry.

After nearly two years of friendship bracelets and sparkly bodysuits, Taylor Swift’s record-shattering Eras Tour is finally coming to a close. Her “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” movie, released in October, became the highest-grossing domestic concert film ever by the end of its opening weekend in North America. Starting in Arizona, the 2023 Eras Tour traversed a total of 20 cities across the United States over about five months. Tragedy briefly struck the Eras Tour when a 23-year-old fan died last year at her show in Rio de Janeiro amid extreme temperatures. European stocks are set to open in negative territory Thursday, with French markets in focus after Prime Minister Michel Barnier's government was toppled in a vote of no confidence Wednesday. A majority of lawmakers from both the left-wing New Popular Front alliance and the far-right National Rally supported a no-confidence motion in the country's lower house yesterday evening. The move angered opposition parties and, last night, deputies on the left and right ousted the government. Barnier is expected to resign Thursday, but he could remain in charge of a caretaker government while President Emmanuel Macron searches for a replacement. Elsewhere overnight, Asia-Pacific markets traded mixed after Wall Street stock benchmarks notched record highs yesterday.

AirBaltic plans to be the first airline to restart flights to Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement, CEO Martin Gauss told Business Insider. "We believe it is key to remain invested and view any potential corrections as technical and temporary opportunities to get into the market," Julius Baer International's Portfolio Manager Aneka Beneby said. Against this backdrop, she observes a "come back" in the traditional 60/40 portfolio, where 60% of funds are invested in equities and the remaining 40% is allocated to fixed income. Overweight equities Looking ahead, Beneby is overweight on equities and prefers the asset class to fixed income given relatively high inflation levels. Her comments come as the consumer price index — a key metric measuring inflation levels — rose 2.6% in the U.S. in October, versus a year ago. Fixed income Unlike U.S. equity markets which have had a stellar rise, fixed income has been under pressure no thanks to high levels of volatility.

"The Trump Administration is likely to rescind this guidance," Kantrowitz said, referring to the Biden administration's looser rules for student loan borrowers in bankruptcy. Latife Neu, a bankruptcy lawyer in Seattle, said she wasn't sure bankruptcy would necessarily become more difficult for student loan borrowers under Trump. "There is a surprising amount of consensus across the political spectrum," Neu said, that the higher bar for student loan borrowers to get their debt discharged in bankruptcy is "a defective policy." In the 1970s, lawmakers added a stipulation that student loan borrowers needed to wait at least five years after they began repayment to file for bankruptcy.
