AASUM, Denmark — In a village in central Denmark, archeologists made a landmark discovery that could hold important clues to the Viking era: a burial ground, containing some 50 “exceptionally well-preserved” skeletons. “This is such an exciting find because we found these skeletons that are so very, very well preserved,” said archeologist Michael Borre Lundø, who led the six-month dig. The site was discovered last year during a routine survey, ahead of power line renovation work on the outskirts of the village of Aasum, 3 miles northeast of Odense, Denmark’s third-largest city. Experts hope to conduct DNA analyses and possibly reconstruct detailed life histories, as well as look into social patterns in the Viking Age, such as kinship, migration patterns and more. “This opens a whole new toolbox for scientific discovery,” said Borre Lundø as he stood on the muddy, wind-swept excavation site.

A National Geographic documentary crew may have found partial remains of the foot of Andrew “Sandy” Irvine, the famed mountaineer who disappeared on Mount Everest 100 years ago. The climbers were trekking Everest in late September when they spotted a disembodied foot inside of a boot that appeared perfectly preserved yet undeniably old. It is not known whether the pair ever reached the summit — an important Everest mystery among climbers and historians alike. Fisher’s documentary team, which included photographer and director Jimmy Chin and filmmaker Erich Roepke, came across the boot while exploring the Central Rongbuk Glacier on the northern side of Mount Everest. “We haven’t done DNA tests yet, so we can’t 100% say with certainty that this is indeed Irvine’s boot, but like I said, the nameplate is perfectly stitched on there.

Body parts found in a freezer earlier this year after a Colorado home was sold have been identified as those of the 16-year-old daughter of the home’s previous owner, authorities said Friday. Archaeologists led by Dr. Pearce Paul Creasman, executive director of the American Center of Research, unearthed the ancient tomb. Exploring Petra, a world wonderWithin the tomb beneath the Treasury, archaeologists found a ceramic vessel resembling the Holy Grail. Only a handful of tombs uncovered in Petra in the past several decades have been found with untouched burials, Creasman said. Amanda Overstreet was identified as the victim through DNA testing, according to a Friday news release from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. The remains were discovered by someone who came to the home to pick up the freezer for free, the sheriff’s office said. There is no evidence Overstreet was ever reported missing, and the “circumstances surrounding her disappearance remain under investigation,” the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office didn’t disclose whether a cause of death was identified. “We were all guessing who it was,” he said of the discovered remains.
