Explosions were reported Monday at a military air base inside Russia. Last week, Der Spiegel reported that an "unusual" amount of activity was occurring at the base. The Russian Ministry of Defense later issued a statement attributing the blasts a Ukrainian attack. Images posted Monday by the commercial satellite firm Maxar shows the base hosting the Tu-160 as well as the Tu-95, or Bear, strategic bomber. The base is also home to strategic bombers.
WASHINGTON, Nov 28 (Reuters) - The United States should end its prosecution of Julian Assange, leading media outlets from the United States and Europe that had collaborated with the WikiLeaks founder said on Monday, citing press freedom concerns. Assange is wanted by U.S. authorities on 18 counts, including a spying charge, related to WikiLeaks' release of confidential U.S. military records and diplomatic cables. Monday marked twelve years since those media outlets collaborated to release excerpts from over 250,000 documents obtained by Assange in the so-called "Cablegate" leak. If extradited to the United States, he faces a sentence of up to 175 years in an American maximum security prison. "Publishing is not a crime," the media outlets said in their letter on Monday.
Angela Merkel said that she was too politically weak to stand up to Putin at their last meeting. "For Putin, only power counts," she told German outlet Der Spiegel. "The feeling was very clear: 'In terms of power politics, you are through,'" she told the magazine. In Moscow, she said, "The feeling was very clear: 'In terms of power politics, you are through.'" US intelligence and independent experts increasingly suggested that Putin was looking for an excuse to invade.
[1/2] General view of the new floating LNG gas terminal, which allows Germany to import LNG via ship from other countries, in the harbour in Wilhelmshaven, Germany, November 15, 2022. Overall, the costs are estimated at about 6.56 billion euros, the ministry said, confirming a report in Der Spiegel. That compares with 2.94 billion euros estimated in the country's 2022 budget. The ministry said the floating terminals were essential for Europe's biggest economy to compensate for a collapse in deliveries of Russian gas since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Germany this month completed the construction of its first floating terminal for LNG at the North Sea port of Wilhelmshaven.

FRANKFURT, Nov 5 (Reuters) - Germany and eight other EU member states are planning to expand sanctions on Iran to include individuals and organisations linked to violence against protesters in the Islamic Republic, magazine Der Spiegel reported, without disclosing its sources. A package containing 31 proposals was introduced in Brussels on Wednesday targeting individuals and institutions in the security sector as well as companies responsible for suppression in Iran, the magazine reported. Russian naval officers chatted last year about nuking Berlin and two military bases in Germany, per Der Spiegel. The military bases — Ramstein and Buchel — are both used by the US military. The Times of London reported that the chatter may have intended to spook Germany and the West. Reuters reported that deeply-held fears of a nuclear war in Germany, felt strongly during the Cold War, have begun to re-emerge. Towns near US military bases, such as Ramstein, are particularly nervous, Reuters said.
Mats Ljungqvist, the prosecutor involved in Sweden's criminal investigation into the Nord Stream leaks in the Swedish economic zone, said Sweden was already co-operating with Denmark and Germany on the matter. He said Sweden had rejected the proposal for a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) from judicial co-operation agency Eurojust because a such a joint investigation would include legal agreements under which Sweden would have to share information from its own investigation that it deemed confidential. He made his comment after a report in German weekly Der Spiegel on Friday that Sweden had rejected plans for a joint investigation with Denmark and Germany, citing German security sources. A Swedish Security Services spokesperson said the security police were co-operating closely with other authorities, also internationally, as part of the Swedish criminal investigation. German TV programme Tagesschau on German public broadcaster ARD said that Denmark, too, had turned down setting up a joint investigation team.

Sweden said it had found a fourth leak on the Nord Stream pipelines this week. NATO said the damage was due to "deliberate, reckless, and irresponsible acts of sabotage". The Swedish coast guard told the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper a fourth leak had been discovered on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that connects between Russia and Europe. The initial leak was detected on Monday in the Nord Stream 2 pipeline as a drop in pressure was observed in both Nord Stream 1 and 2. Several weeks ago, the CIA told Germany that the Nord Stream pipelines could be attacked, Germany's Der Spiegel newspaper reported.
Denmark said the Nord Stream 1 pipeline gas leaks in the Baltic Sea were likely deliberate sabotage. European natural gas benchmarks jumped above 200 euros )$191.56) early Wednesday due to worries about the risks to gas supplies to Europe. The region is already facing an energy crisis after Russia choked off flows via the key Nord Stream 1 pipeline. Investors meanwhile were monitoring developments after recent damage to the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, which are leaking natural gas into the Baltic Sea. The US Central Intelligence Agency warned Germany weeks ago about potential attacks on Nord Stream, German magazine Der Spiegel reported Tuesday.
The Nord Stream pipeline explosions are a major escalation of the energy crisis, according to analyst Simone Tagliapietra. "Today, Russia brought its energy weaponisation against Europe to the next level: from economic to hybrid war," tweeted the senior fellow at the think tank Bruegel. The US is supporting efforts to investigate the "apparent sabotage" of the Nord Stream pipelines, a national security advisor said, while two senior German lawmakers have pointed the finger at Russia. The US Central Intelligence Agency warned Germany weeks ago about potential attacks on Nord Stream, German magazine Der Spiegel reported Tuesday. While the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 are shuttered and not delivering gas to Europe, European natural gas futures jumped 11% Wednesday as investors assessed the new risks to pipelines.
Two senior German lawmakers have pointed the finger at Russia over suspected sabotage of Nord Stream. European lawmakers had previously left open the question about who the suspected Nord Stream saboteur could be. On Monday, Danish and Swedish authorities detected three severe leaks affecting the four Nord Stream pipelines, which run from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea. Before Russia invaded Ukraine, Nord Stream was intended as the main artery for natural-gas exports from Russia to Europe. The US Central Intelligence Agency warned Germany weeks ago about potential attacks on Nord Stream, German magazine Der Spiegel reported Tuesday.
The CIA told Germany weeks ago the Nord Stream pipelines could be attacked, sources told Der Spiegel. The pipelines were intended to be the main artery of natural-gas supply from Russia to Europe. On Monday, three severe leaks were discovered on the four Nord Stream pipelines, which run from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea. Nord Stream AG, the operator of the pipelines, said Tuesday the damage they'd sustained was "unprecedented." German media earlier Tuesday reported government officials as saying they believed the damage to the Nord Stream pipelines wasn't accidental.
Facebook parent company Meta said Tuesday it took down a network of fake accounts from China that attempted to interfere in American politics ahead of this November’s midterm elections. Meta said the Chinese operation set up fake accounts posing as Americans, attacking politicians from both parties and posting inflammatory material about divisive issues such as abortion and gun rights. The network was small — just 84 Facebook accounts — and did not have a chance to develop much of an audience, Meta said in a report released Tuesday. “And it’s the first time we’ve seen that from a Chinese operation in this way. The New York Times reported in June that the company's core election team was disbanded, and the company has remained relatively quiet about its election efforts.
New York CNN Business —Facebook parent company Meta announced Tuesday it had detected and shut down two separate networks of fake accounts engaged in covert influence operations run from China and Russia. Meta publicly detailed the takedown as it remains on high alert for foreign interference in the US midterm elections, a Meta spokesperson told CNN. The company has shared details of the Chinese accounts with the FBI, a Meta spokesperson said. More than 2,000 Facebook accounts and pages were part of the effort to push pro-Kremlin narratives about the war in Ukraine, Meta said. “This was the first Chinese network we disrupted that focused on US domestic politics ahead of the midterm elections,” Meta said.
Yevgeny Prigozhin admitted to founding the Wagner mercenary firm in 2014. "I cleaned old weapons myself," the billionaire, known as "Putin's chef," said in a statement. Prigozhin previously denied founding the group and sued those who reported on his Wagner ties. "From that moment, on May 1, 2014, a group of patriots was born, which later acquired the name PMC Wagner." Timothy Lay, a coauthor of the report, told Insider that Wagner's actions — including widespread looting — were akin to "criminal violence."

“The war has begun. I will hardly be able to fall asleep, and there is no point in trying to calculate what has changed forever.” So wrote Yevgenia Belorusets from Kyiv in the early hours of Friday, Feb. 25, 2022, at the outset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Her diary entry on the war’s opening salvo was the first of around 40 that have now been collected and published together in “War Diary,” an essential document of the Ukrainian people’s experience of the conflict. Ms. Belorusets, a Ukrainian writer and photographer, was living in Kyiv when Vladimir Putin launched his “special military operation.” She remained for more than a month. Greg Nissan worked with Isolarii to translate the text and edit the book version, a joint project with the independent publishing house New Directions.
