Meet the hobbyists who collect barf bags
  + stars: | 2024-06-19 | by ( Aj Willingham | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +12 min
CNN —“I collect barf bags” is not a complete sentence. “I collect barf bags because they’re pretty neat.”“I collect barf bags, and I’m not the only one.”Of the eight billion people on the planet, the number of serious barf bag collectors is just north of 100, according to notable members of their ranks. The ineffable whyWhen Steve Silberburg started collecting barf bags around 1981, he thought he would be the only one. People were indeed amused, but it had an unintended side effect: Classmates started bringing Silberburg other barf bags to add to his collection. “We don’t want anybody to get ahead of us, you know.”“It makes a good litmus test, telling people you collect barf bags,” Silberburg says.

Meanwhile, meme stock champion Keith Gill hosted his first livestream in a few years Friday. He revealed that he didn't have any institutional backers and the GameStop positions he had shared in screenshots were his only bets. The video game company's stock declined to just below $24 apiece on Monday after falling nearly 40% on Friday alone. GameStop shares fell more than 16% on Monday as the meme stock extended Friday's sell-off sparked by a dismal earnings report and a uninspiring livestream from Roaring Kitty. The analyst thinks that any boost GameStop got from Gill could turn out to be short-lived.

New York CNN —In Florida, a handful of dead mall anchor Sears stores, left vacant and unmoored by the iconic retailer’s bankruptcy six years ago, are being jolted back to life. Construction began in the empty Sears stores at the citrus Park Mall in early 2022 and the facility opened in May 2023. You've heard this one before: A big tech company is offering a lifeline to distressed media companies. That's the argument against a slew of deals publishers have been making with Sam Altman's OpenAI over the past few months. But the OpenAI deals, the publishers emphasize, are straightforward licensing deals for stuff they're already making. AdvertisementWhich means — they say — at the end of these deals, publishers won't have to regret investing in another defunct Big Tech project. But the thing I'm most worried about as someone who makes words for a living isn't a replay of the old Facebook/Apple/Google deals publishers now regret.

In addition to Wegovy and Ozempic, the GLP-1 class includes Eli Lilly's highly popular weight loss drug Zepbound and diabetes treatment Mounjaro. VanGilder signed up nearly four years ago and started taking the weekly diabetes injection Ozempic specifically for weight loss. The big difference between Calibrate and prior weight loss efforts, VanGilder said, is that she doesn't feel like she's dieting. Calibrate is one of the only companies to regularly release reports detailing the results of its weight loss program. The federal Medicare program by law can't cover weight loss drugs unless the prescription is for another approved health benefit, such as diabetes or cardiovascular health.

New research this week is adding fresh detail to one of paleontology’s biggest questions: Did dinosaur blood run hot or cold? Clues from fossilized eggshells and bones have now suggested that some dinosaurs were warm-blooded and others were not. Reinhard Dirscherl/ullstein bild/Getty ImagesMarine scientists have used artificial intelligence to decode previously unknown complexity in the calls of sperm whales. The whales produced a catalog of clicking sounds, which the researchers described as akin to a “phonetic alphabet” for sperm whales. What sperm whales are saying with their clicks remains a mystery to human ears, but understanding the scope of their vocal exchanges is an important step toward linking their calls with specific behavior.

The inhospitable location has long puzzled archaeologists, some of whom had found evidence that the Nile River once flowed near these pyramids in some capacity, facilitating the landmarks’ construction starting 4,700 years ago. “This is the first study to provide the first map of the long-lost ancient branch of the Nile River.”Ghoneim and her colleagues refer to this extinct branch of the Nile river as Ahramat, which is Arabic for pyramids. Ancient Egyptians likely used the now-extinct Ahramat Branch to build many pyramids. Eman Ghoneim et alThe ancient waterway would have been about 0.5 kilometers wide (about one-third of a mile) with a depth of at least 25 meters (82 feet) — similar to the contemporary Nile, Ghoneim said. Most likely, a period of drought and desertification swept sand into the region, silting up the river, Ghoneim said.

John Barbata, the drummer for the Turtles, Jefferson Airplane, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, who walked away from rock music at the height of his career, has died. His death was announced in a social media post by Jefferson Airplane on Monday. A cause of death was not given and a list of survivors was not immediately available. Mr. Barbata joined the Turtles after leaving his high school band and enjoyed success almost immediately, drumming on the band’s best-known track, “Happy Together,” released in 1967. “I heard that the Turtles were looking for a drummer, they called me down to the studio to try me out on some session work, the first song we recorded was ‘Happy Together,’” Mr. Barbata wrote on his now defunct website, archived by web.archive.org.

To the Editor:Re “A Home Buying Prohibition Rattles Chinese Nationals in Florida” (news article, May 7):The excellent reporting by Amy Qin and Patricia Mazzei shows why State Representative David Borrero, a Miami-area Republican, is wrong in claiming that national security interests take precedence over discrimination claims. Time and again, we see how this false dichotomy is used to justify civil rights violations against Asian Americans. This was the case in major touch points throughout our history, from the Japanese American incarceration during World War II to the Justice Department’s now defunct China Initiative, which led to the increased faulty targeting, profiling and prosecution of Asian American and immigrant researchers, scientists, and professors — particularly those of Chinese descent. The bigoted thinking espoused by Representative Borrero and others who support these initiatives should not go unchecked. This incident serves as an example of the urgent need for a profound shift toward sustainable space practices. Proponents of a circular space economy advocate for a transformative departure from this wasteful paradigm. Much like embracing reusable materials on Earth, transitioning to a circular space economy means designing space systems with reuse, refurbishment and recyclability in mind. The European Space Agency (ESA) has emerged as a trailblazer in the pursuit of a circular space economy. By leading the charge toward sustainable space practices, NASA can inspire other space agencies and private companies to follow suit.
