ICBC's U.S. unit told market participants on Friday it was hoping to finish the cyber review over the weekend, but the sources said they expected it would spill into next week. There has been a nationwide increase in "phantom hacker" scams, a type of fraud "significantly impacting senior citizens," who often lose their entire bank, savings, retirement or investment accounts to such crime, according to the FBI. As of August 2023, losses from tech support scams were up 40% during the same period in 2022, according to a recent FBI public service announcement. The cybercrime group has made a ransom demand to MGM as well, those sources told CNBC's Contessa Brewer. The 8-K report, similar to one filed by MGM Resorts on Wednesday, acknowledges the hack as a material event. The cybercrime group demanded a $30 million ransom from Caesars, but the company ultimately agreed to pay about half that, sources said. Bloomberg previously reported the ransom and that the same group is behind the attacks on both companies. It wasn't immediately clear why Caesars delayed filing the report disclosing the hack and ransom for weeks.
