"By the way," Vice President Kamala Harris said at an Atlanta rally on Tuesday, "don't you find some of their stuff to just be plain weird?" With Democrats eagerly resurfacing the Ohio senator's years-old comments about "childless cat ladies," Republicans are suddenly on the defensive over their party's nominee for vice president. In an attempted counterpunch, Vance himself posted a video of Vice President Kamala Harris stating her pronouns during a CNN town hall in 2019. I wish her stepchildren and Kamala Harris and her whole family the very best. But what turns off Democrats — and plenty of Republicans — is that he isn't celebrating those who are able to have families.

As a senator in 2019, Ms. Harris cosponsored the Green New Deal, a nonbinding resolution that was centered around the idea that addressing climate change required significant changes in the economy. Sen. JD Vance, the running mate of former President Donald Trump, on Friday defended his comments accusing key Democrats — including Vice President Kamala Harris — of being miserable "childless cat ladies" who want to "make the rest of the country miserable too," as well as anti-family and anti-kids. Vance has been under fire for days after the "cat ladies" remark resurfaced online following the Ohio Republican's nomination as the party's vice presidential candidate. I explicitly said in my remarks," Vance said. At the time Vance made his remarks Buttigieg was in the process of adopting twin babies with his partner. A month after his comment in 2021, Vance appeared on Tucker Carlson's now defunct-show on Fox News — Kelly's former employer — and expanded on it.

Democratic congressional leaders had remained quiet so far — but there were signs that could soon change. Massachusetts Rep. Katherine Clark and California Rep. Pete Aguilar, the second- and third-ranking House Democrats, endorsed Harris on Monday morning. The Clintons, in a statement Sunday, endorsed Harris; Obama did not, deferring to the party’s process. In those phone calls, Harris made clear that while she was grateful for Biden’s endorsement, she planned to earn the Democratic nomination in her own right. Longtime Democratic operative Donna Brazile said that she was in the process of gathering delegates to support Harris.

Some Democrats have called for a mini-primary, which would allow potential Harris challengers to make their case ahead of an open convention in August. Sen. President Biden and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez agree on this much: It is the elites who are trying to take Biden down, ignoring the sentiments of legions of Democratic voters. I saw the elites propping him up, ignoring the sentiments of legions of Democratic voters. But the Democratic Party’s elites were in lock step around Biden. The White House and the Democratic Party apparatus it controls are powerful. “I would be crucified by them if I spoke out of line,” an anonymous Democratic state party chair told NBC News early this month.

Biden said he would speak to the matter further later this week. His decision, made after weeks of growing pressure from members of his own party, throws Democrats into uncharted territory. Sen. Joe Manchin, an independent from West Virginia who caucuses with Democrats, called for an "open process" to select a new nominee as he called for Biden to step aside earlier on Sunday. On Sunday, immediately after Biden announced his decision to withdraw, a series of Republican politicians called on Biden to resign immediately, including Speaker Mike Johnson. "If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President," Johnson said.

But if that suddenly changes, two dozen leading Democratic politicians and operatives told CNN, they can’t realistically see this ending any other way. Still, it’s an idea some Harris backers support, doubting that anyone serious would challenge her, as much chest puffing as there is behind the scenes. Multiple Democratic members of Congress who have called for Biden to go declined on Friday when asked by CNN if they were ready to say they want Harris to be the nominee. “I do believe it has to be the vice president. But she warned that things could get more chaotic for Democrats if Biden were to make the extraordinary move to end his campaign just weeks before the Democratic convention. In a twist for the left-leaning Ocasio-Cortez, her comments make her among the more forceful pro-Biden voices in the party right now. Many progressives, including Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., are primarily driven by policy goals and know they have Biden's ear. The strategist said part of the reason progressives like Ocasio-Cortez are backing Biden is the "bird in hand phenomenon" — there's a "comfort level" with Biden in the White House. When you’re paid in tips, you’re never really sure if you’ll make rent. At a rally last month in Nevada, Donald Trump announced that, if elected, he would exempt tips from federal taxes. 6 is “Large tax cuts for workers, and no tax on tips!” Republicans in Congress are already working on a bill designed to do just that. Last week, they introduced “Tax Free Tips Act of 2024,” which would end federal income and employment taxes on tips. And yet one of the men, former President Donald Trump, 78, has been able to remake the Republican Party around his own divisive persona. Trump, between now and then, will pick a vice president from a short list of people who have previously criticized him but are now all in. Doug Burgum, who are also reportedly on Trump’s vice presidential short list, should be wary. CNN —Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York has introduced articles of impeachment against conservative Supreme Court Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas over their failure to disclose gifts they have received while serving on the court – a messaging move that will surely fail in the GOP-controlled House. “Justice Thomas and Alito’s repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement. This is the latest example of House Democrats – led by some of their highest-profile members – prioritizing the Supreme Court in their campaign year messaging. They’ve previously signaled that, if they regain control of the House, they’d use the power of the gavel to investigate alleged ethical lapses by the justices. A bipartisan group of Senators introduced a new bill that would ban Congress from trading stocks. The ETHICS act would impose hefty fines against members of Congress that violate the law. The ETHICS legislation, if passed, would immediately ban members of Congress from trading stocks, and it would come with an imposed timeline to divest their stocks when the next session of Congress starts in 2027. The proposed law would also impose hefty fines on Congressional members who violated the trading ban. But the passage of this new stock trading ban faces an uphill battle from Congress itself.

The case for a Biden comeback always presumed that voters would mostly cast their ballots based on their views about Donald J. Trump. So long as that’s true, the path to a Biden comeback will be long and arduous. The best that can be said for Mr. Biden is that the worst of the post-debate crisis might — might — be over. Even skeptics like Jerry Nadler, who had reportedly told his colleagues that Mr. Biden should end his candidacy, appeared newly resigned to Mr. Biden’s renomination. And all of this follows a steady stream of Democrats who affirmed their support for Mr. Biden on Monday, including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
