5 ways to attack the climate crisis

The climate crisis impacts Earth — its land, its atmosphere and its bodies of water — and it also profoundly affects the health and behavior of the planet’s inhabitants large and small, including humanity. And CNN Chief Climate Correspondent Bill Weir has a front-row seat to the ever-evolving situation. “Five million people die prematurely every year just to, just from particulate pollution of burning fossil fuels around the world,” Weir said. “It is taking care of water and soil and air… (that) fills those (Maslow) needs in ways that we can’t imagine in our modern, convenient world,” he said. “I just want folks to connect with each other and nature in the best possible ways,” he said.

Boeing 787 Dreamliners are built at the aviation company's North Charleston, South Carolina, assembly plant on May 30, 2023. Boeing told employees on Monday that it expects a slower increase in production and deliveries of new 787 Dreamliner planes because of supplier shortages of "a few key parts." The company had separately been trying to boost output of 787 Dreamliners after quality problems suspended deliveries for nearly two years, ending in mid-2022. "To that end, we have shared with our customers that we expect a slower increase in our rate of production and deliveries," he wrote in the memo, reported earlier by Reuters, adding that the company still plans to increase the rate steadily because of high demand. Boeing reports quarterly results and will likely detail its production plans before the market opens on Wednesday.

The obligations of a buyer’s agent to youLegally and ethically, buyer’s agents have six key obligations to you. Obedience: While they can make recommendations, a buyer’s agent must follow your instructions, assuming you’re not asking them to do anything illegal. Such a body may be known as the real estate commission, the board of real estate or department of real estate. Find out, too, if the agent has availability that will work with your schedule, said David Kent, founder of The Real Buyer’s Agent in Charleston, South Carolina. It also may include what commission you will pay the agent if the seller of a home you buy hasn’t agreed to pay both the listing agent and the buyer’s agent, which is traditionally how it’s been done.

An employee works on the tail of a Boeing Co. Dreamliner 787 plane on the production line at the company's final assembly facility in North Charleston, South Carolina. Boeing denied the allegations, calling them "inaccurate" and said it stood by the planes' safety. Salehpour is scheduled to appear along with another whistleblower who worked at Boeing, a former aviation official and an independent safety expert at a Senate hearing on Wednesday about aircraft safety called "Examining Boeing's Broken Safety Culture: Firsthand Accounts." Boeing last week declined to comment on those specific allegations, citing the FAA's ongoing whistleblower investigation, but said, "Retaliation is strictly prohibited at Boeing." The company is scheduled to report quarterly results on April 24, when it will face investor questions about aircraft safety, production rates and FAA oversight.

Boeing sought on Monday to reassure the public of the safety of its 787 Dreamliner plane days before a whistle-blower is scheduled to testify before Congress about his concerns regarding the jet’s structural integrity. The presentation came just under a week after The New York Times reported the allegations by the whistle-blower, Sam Salehpour, who works as a quality engineer at Boeing and is set to testify before a Senate panel on Wednesday. Mr. Salehpour said that sections of the fuselage of the Dreamliner, a wide-body plane that makes extensive use of composite materials, were not properly fastened together and that the plane could suffer structural failure over time as a result. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating his allegations. Mr. Salehpour’s claims instantly created another public-relations problem for Boeing, which has been facing intense scrutiny over its manufacturing practices after a panel came off a 737 Max during an Alaska Airlines flight in January.

Kathie Zucker, 57, lived in New Jersey her whole life, but is now moving to South Carolina. After visiting her daughter — who attends college in Charleston, South Carolina, she found that she liked the area. I wouldn't say my daughter living there was the sole consideration for moving. Our house in South Carolina is in a suburb called Moncks Corner, about 30 miles from Charleston proper.

Imports coming to the U.S. from China are experiencing a notable increase, according to new trade and logistics data. The first half of 2024 is expected to total 11.7 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), an increase of 11% from the same period last year. In 2023, imports were down from 2022 by almost 13%, totaling 22.3 million TEUs. By comparison, New York/New Jersey processed 7.81 million TEUs, Georgia 5.4 million TEUs, Virginia at 3.3 million TEUs, Charleston 2.5 million TEUs, Jacksonville 1.3 million TEUs, and Miami 1.25 million TEUs. The other reason for the recent container push is fears of a labor strike at East Coast and Gulf ports.

CNN —A federal court said Thursday that it will allow a US House election in South Carolina for Republican Rep. Nancy Mace’s seat to proceed under a map it had previously declared unconstitutional. In a brief order, the judges in the case said they had little choice, given a fast-approaching deadline to prepare for the primary election for the state’s down-ballot contests. South Carolina officials appealed to the US Supreme Court, and the justices heard arguments in the case in October. They said they recognized that it’s unusual to allow an election to proceed under a map they had deemed invalid. Mace won reelection in 2022 by 14 points, after winning the seat under the previous map by a single point two years earlier.

Unlike Obama and Clinton before him, Biden is running against a candidate only a few years his junior. It was a twist on how Clinton answered a question about Dole's age during the second presidential debate in 1996. There is not much precedent for the event Biden's campaign is putting on Thursday. Obama, Biden and Clinton will inevitably go down memory lane during a discussion moderated by comedian Stephen Colbert. Aside from private conversations, Biden also often directs his top aides to follow up with Obama or Clinton on various topics of conversation.

The steel frame of the Francis Scott Key Bridge sits on top of the container ship Dali after the bridge collapsed on Tuesday. After the 1980 collision, he argued, more substantial dolphins or a fendering system should have been added to the Key Bridge. “You knock out one of the support posts, the entire bridge collapses.”The Key Bridge is hardly unique among large bridges in its age. Some other bridges that cross major shipping routes are designed with more extensive protections than the Key Bridge’s. Kenny Payne, a first-time head coach, was fired by Louisville on March 13 after going 12-52 the last two seasons at his alma mater. It marked the worst two-year stretch in the storied program's history and capped its third consecutive losing season after missing the NCAA Tournament in 2021. Debt forgiveness has historically been a highly partisan issue, with supporters and detractors split down party lines. Almost a quarter, 23%, of Gen X voters surveyed said they or someone in their household had student loan debt. The Supreme Court last June struck down the president's $400 billion plan to deliver student loan forgiveness to as many as 40 million Americans. The climate crisis ends up touching on all of those issues, as CNN’s chief climate correspondent Bill Weir told me. Removing politics from climate changeWOLF: It’s interesting to hear you say that about Texas, because the governor and the Republican-dominated legislature there would seemingly be opposed to doing anything specifically because of climate change. Joe Biden has tried to make the argument that addressing climate change should be an economic boom. It seems clear that we’re going to burst through the 2-degree tipping point that had been previously suggested as the tipping point for climate change. What that means for marine ecosystems and coral reefs, which are the cradles of life in the oceans, and what it means for the power of storms as we head into hurricane season has scientists really, really worried.
