But the idea of electing the first female president didn't strongly motivate people to turn out. They don't expect that America will have to wait much longer for a female president. "I voted for Vice President Harris, but there was so much pause in that decision — I debated it for weeks," she says. Harris' loss has not diminished Amiwala's optimism that the U.S. could elect its first female president soon. "I think Americans are ready for a woman president, it just wasn't meant to be Harris," Amiwala says.

For Jennifer Dulski, hiring candidates who've served in the exact type of role she's looking to fill is not a priority. She adds that, at Rising Team, "in zero of our job descriptions will you ever see the term 'X years experience' doing ' XYZ.'" She's hired many people who have not had exactly the same job before, she says, and "fewer than 5% of them have failed." That doesn't mean she's hiring people who've never done anything related to the role. Their experience just doesn't have to be a carbon copy of the job she's hiring for.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump and Elon Musk have big ambitions for making the federal government leaner and more efficient by reviewing its budget and operations from top to bottom. Details about how the new Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, will operate – and how Musk and his co-leader Vivek Ramaswamy will avoid conflicts of interest – remain scarce. Musk also took aim at the Department of Education, a frequent target of Trump and Republicans, criticizing the agency for allegedly indoctrinating kids with left-wing propaganda and other failings. Slashing that much from the federal budget – which totaled roughly $6.8 trillion in fiscal 2024 – would require cutting every program by roughly one-third, said Bobby Kogan, senior director of federal budget policy at the left-leaning Center for American Progress. “Trump’s ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ will not be an actual department.

Pennsylvania’s Senate race is heading to a recount, which the narrow margin between Republican Dave McCormick and Democratic Sen. Bob Casey triggered automatically under state law. Secretary of the Commonwealth Al Schmidt announced Wednesday that the unofficial results showing a narrow race have led to a recount. Any margin under 0.5 percentage points triggers a recount in Pennsylvania. But the current vote count shows a sizable drop-off between Trump and McCormick, with Trump winning more than 100,000 more votes than McCormick. NBC News projected that Democratic Senate candidates in Arizona, Michigan, Nevada and Wisconsin won their races even as Trump carried the states.

House Republicans’ razor-thin victory was propelled by Trump’s decisive win over Vice President Kamala Harris in both the Electoral College and the popular vote. So far, Republicans have captured the 218 seats needed to secure the majority to Democrats’ 208 seats. Last week, Republicans flipped three Democratic Senate seats to win control of the upper chamber. They were among the 18 GOP House districts that President Joe Biden carried in 2020. Democratic challenger George Whitesides also ousted vulnerable GOP Rep. Mike Garcia in Southern California.

WASHINGTON — Over the last two years, a narrow Republican House majority has fought bitterly over everything from electing a speaker, keeping the government functioning and even passing symbolic messaging bills. Now, Republicans have clinched at least 218 seats to win a House majority, NBC News projects, but it’ll be another small one. “The House has always been a chaotic place, will always be a chaotic place. And here in the Senate, obviously, we continue to have a number of tools to exercise.”There is precedent for a narrow House majority delivering major legislation. ‘Trump is so volatile’Rep. Democrat Dave Min has defeated Republican Scott Baugh in the race for a congressional seat in Orange County, California, NBC News projects. Former Vice President Mike Pence was, for most of their four years together, a loyal partner who helped smooth Trump’s dealings with establishment Republicans and evangelical conservatives. “It compresses things,” said Joel Goldstein, a vice presidential scholar and professor emeritus at Saint Louis University. At one point, polling showed him to be one of the least-liked vice presidential candidates over the last 30 years. And during his own presidency, Biden tasked Vice President Kamala Harris with the tough-to-define and tough-to-evaluate assignment of tackling the root causes of migration from Mexico and Central America. He also was the last sitting vice president to win the presidency.

The decision would help Musk and his America PAC move for outright dismissal of the lawsuit. Elon Musk's controversial $1 million-a-day swing state sweepstakes was never a lottery, a Philadelphia judge said in a written decision explaining why he declined to shut the program down after a hearing last Monday. Lotteries require a prize, a payment for a chance to win that prize, and for winners to be chosen at random, the judge said. Daniel Haarburger always asks job candidates a simple, common interview question: What does your day-to-day life look like? One candidate gave him a textbook example of the "worst response that I've ever heard," Haarburger, the CEO of Denver-based dog toy company Woof, tells CNBC Make It. That was someone blatantly saying, 'I don't know what the hell I'm doing.'" You do need to be honest during job interviews, Haarburger notes. The effect of pay transparency laws on states

The net effect for employers and employeesWhile only a minority of states require employers to provide pay transparency, their laws are having a domino effect on employers across the United States. “The majority of top-performing organizations (57%) embrace pay transparency and share pay ranges even when not required by law,” Payscale’s report noted. How pay transparency is helping individualsWhile there are federal laws prohibiting wage discrimination based on gender and other protected classifications, most states also have their own pay equity laws on the books. Wieselthier considers pay transparency laws a subset of pay equity because they provide a tool people can use to ensure they’re being paid fairly. “The whole purpose of pay transparency laws is to empower the candidates to negotiate,” Seikaly said.

What issue did your vote come down to in the end? Starting in mid-August, we spoke regularly to 13 young voters who were torn about their choice in the presidential election, to track how and why their opinions were evolving. “I can’t believe it, but I did end up voting for Donald Trump,” said Abigail, a 23-year-old Virginian who backed Mr. Biden last time. The report adds to some other examples of hateful rhetoric spreading after Trump’s victory. Gender played a central role in this year’s election as Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign emphasized reproductive rights. Even before his election, Trump and his supporters had targeted Harris with misogynistic comments throughout her campaign. On platforms like TikTok, women posted about the misogynistic comments they had received parroting Fuentes’ remarks, with many also rebuking the sentiment. Amid a presidential loss and hand-wringing over the wreckage, congressional gains for Democrats in New York state are one of the small bright spots shining out from the party’s bleak results. The election is set to be held on February 23, according to sources within the parliamentary group of Scholz' social democratic party (SPD). It is a necessary step ahead of early elections in Germany as the chancellor must first call for the vote in parliament. Succeeding in a job interview requires you to offer strong answers, but you can't do that unless you're also listening intently, says Gillian Munson. Failing to listen to the question asked, and answering with an inappropriate response, is the top, "absolute" red flag she sees in candidates during interviews, says Munson, Vimeo's chief financial officer. "Sometimes folks are in such a hurry to get through the conversation that they don't carefully listen to the question and answer it," she tells CNBC Make It. Even in instances when a candidate is trying to skirt around a question they don't want to answer head-on, it's important to acknowledge that the question is there and relate your answer back to it, advises Munson, 54, who has more than 30 years of experience in the finance industry.
