More than 4,000 people have descended here for the Future Proof conference , a vast social gathering designed to give younger registered investment advisors and other investment professionals access to what they want. What they want, apparently, is an intense desire to network with other RIAs and investment professionals and find ways to grow their business. Reimagining the financial conference Future Proof is the brainchild of Barry Ritholtz, co-founder, chairman, and chief investment officer of Ritholtz Wealth Management, and CEO Josh Brown. This is the third year for the conference, but Ritholtz and company have been doing conferences for 15 years. Ritholtz describes it as an ongoing project to reinvent the financial conference concept, which he says is "moribund."

GLENDALE, Ariz. — Former independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Saturday he is being investigated for collecting a whale specimen. Kennedy said that he responded in a letter, baselessly linking the National Marine Fisheries Service with whale deaths and calling for the agency to investigate. Kennedy did not go into details about the whale incident, but his daughter had previously described a situation involving a whale that took place 30 years ago. Kennedy endorsed Trump in August and has since been on the campaign trail urging supporters to back the former president. The National Marine Fisheries Service, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, did not immediately respond to a request for comment and confirmation Saturday night.

In Trump's case, Electric Avenue was used for a commercial purpose, not for an allowable non-profit, research, or educational purpose, the judge wrote. The second factor looks at whether the copyrighted work was "creative" or "factual." The third factor weighs how much of the copyrighted work was taken for an unauthorized use. AdvertisementThe final factor asks "whether, if the challenged use becomes widespread, it will adversely affect the potential market for the copyrighted work," the judge wrote. "In this case, there is no public benefit as a result of the defendants' use of 'Electric Avenue'" the judge wrote.

Read previewVice President Kamala Harris hammered former President Donald Trump on abortion during the presidential debate on Tuesday, invoking real-world consequences of abortion bans. Harris responded by saying more than 20 states have since passed "Trump abortion bans," including some that do not have exceptions for rape or incest, calling the bans "immoral." During the exchange, the vice president looked directly at Trump with a powerful response that included specific examples of how state-level abortion bans have impacted reproductive rights. AdvertisementAbortion is also a winning issue for Democrats and has been important for turnout in states where abortion referendums have been on the ballot. President Joe Biden, notably, botched his answer on abortion during his debate with Trump before he dropped out of the race.

watch nowYoung adults face financial obstaclesOver decades, attitudes about marriage and parenthood have changed. More recently, experts say, the overall cost of living has become a contributing factor in decisions to forgo parenthood. Between 1991 and 2024, the costs for child care rose at nearly twice the pace of overall inflation. But parenthood and related child care costs are not just personal financial issues, he added. "The cost of child care is really an economic growth and productivity issue as well," House said — and that affects all Americans, not just those with young kids.

Trump's lawyers are expected to argue that, for decades, Grant somehow neglected to copyright the sound recording, or "master," for "Electric Avenue." Trump's lawyers acknowledge that Grant copyrighted the sheet music 40 years ago. Trump's side may argue that even Grant has tacitly acknowledged that the sound-recording copyright for "Electric Avenue" was never properly nailed down. Two weeks ago, on August 15, Grant applied to the US Copyright Office "for a sound-recording copyright registration of Electric Avenue," a court filing says. AdvertisementAnd Grant has been deposed by Trump's lawyers, who asked the artist to "explain" the song.

Researchers have begun measuring the impact of legalized sports gambling on American households, and the initial results paint a worrisome picture about how its expansion has affected bettors’ finances. In separate papers released this month, academics have found that households in states where gambling was legalized saw significantly reduced savings, as well as lower investments in assets like stocks that are generally considered more financially sound. Meanwhile, states that legalized sports betting saw their residents’ aggregate credit scores decrease, while bankruptcies increased. North Carolina became the most recent state to offer online sports betting earlier this year. Earlier this year, the major sports betting platforms formed the Responsible Online Gaming Association to address problem gambling.

Seventeen others were killed when a strike hit a road south of Khan Younis, including the passengers on a tuk-tuk and passers-by, Nasser Hospital said. A judge in Kentucky has dismissed core charges against two former Louisville police officials involved in the raid that ended in Breonna Taylor's death. Judge Charles R. Simpson III of western Kentucky's U.S. District Court on Thursday said Taylor's death was triggered by the actions of her boyfriend, who opened fire when police arrived outside her Louisville apartment March 13, 2020. "Those violations resulted in Ms. Taylor’s death," he said in a statement at the time. Jaynes and Meany weren't at the raid, and her death was more directly tied to Walker's decision to open fire, the judge wrote. "The Court finds that the warrantless entry was not the actual cause of Taylor’s death," he wrote in his decision.

She addressed whether a celebration was suitable when dozens of hostages remain in Gaza following the Oct. 7 attack that sparked war between Israel and Hamas militants. The party was titled "Return to Life" and featured a large graphic image of Or with the words, "We will dance again." More than 40,000 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel launched its offensive in the enclave following Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attacks, local officials say. While some companies are trying to reduce methane emissions, others are trying to capture and remove it as it's produced. These naturally occurring microscopic organisms live in the soil and eat methane as food for survival. Much like yeast that eats sugar in bread and produces substances that make it rise, mems eat methane and produce fertilizer. This would mitigate methane emissions and enable the grocery company to make climate-friendly claims for their milk and other products. The initial application from Lykos presented positive data from two late-stage clinical trials that used MDMA in combination with talk therapy to treat PTSD. The advisers said it was also difficult to parse how much the accompanying talk therapy — an area that the FDA does not regulate — contributed to outcomes. Advocates for the treatment, including some veterans groups, said they were “incredibly disappointed” by the FDA decision. Dozens of clinical trials involving psychedelics are in various stages, and additional scrutiny can help strengthen the findings and build confidence. Psychopharmacology did not allow the study authors to publish a correction with data that excluded findings from one study site, said Allison Feduccia, an author in all three retracted studies.

Former Uvalde school Police Chief Pete Arredondo and former school officer Adrian Gonzales have pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of child abandonment and endangerment. The Federal Reserve sets interest rates, and it operates independently of the White House. Last month, Trump said that if elected he would "bring interest rates way down." Now, however, Trump has cautioned against the Fed lowering rates shortly before the presidential election in November. Here’s a look at what voters had to say as part of four different groups: Trump loyalists, center-right voters conflicted about Trump, young progressives and traditional Democrats. But a group of these women did admit that the decision by Democrats to swap out Biden for Harris does concern them. “My concern about Trump is him making too aggressive of choices and us not being able to recover from it. But that does make me nervous because, did we vet everything that’s going to happen?” said Alyssa, a 29-year old woman who is still undecided on how she’s voting this fall. That’s powerful.”Traditional Democrats think Biden had to goThat support for Biden hanging up his political spikes extended to the group of traditional Democrats too.

watch nowWho is falling behind on credit card billsThese borrowers "may have overextended during the pandemic," the New York Fed researchers said on a press call Tuesday. Delinquent borrowers are often renters, with shorter credit histories and lower credit limits, making them more likely to be financially vulnerable and miss a payment, the researchers said. Over the last year, roughly 9.1% of credit card balances transitioned into delinquency, the New York Fed found. Among the millennials transitioning into delinquency, many also entered the labor market during the Great Recession and may be experiencing the prolonged negative effects of graduating into an economic downturn, the New York Fed researchers said. Bitcoin was no exception to Monday's broad market rout, which gives investors a good buying opportunity, according to analysts. The flagship cryptocurrency dropped 11% over the three days ending Monday, according to Coin Metrics, pulling down the performance of stocks related to it. "As a reminder, Bitcoin historically has very strong returns in the one-year period post halving," Brett Knoblauch, an analyst at Cantor Fitzgerald, said in a note Monday. Cantor has overweight ratings on eight mining stocks, including Riot Platforms , CleanSpark , Iris Energy , Core Scientific and Cipher Mining . Knoblauch said Riot Platforms, one of the largest of the mining stocks, has the best liquidity and one of the cheapest all-in costs to mine bitcoin.

Vice President Kamala Harris has selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate, capping the Midwestern Democrat’s short but swift ascent from a relative unknown to a leading driver of the Democratic attacks on Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda. Before Walz was elected governor in 2018, he served 12 years in Congress, representing a conservative-leaning rural district that, both before and after his tenure, has been mostly dominated by Republicans. Walz, 60, is also a former high school teacher and football coach who served in the Army National Guard. Harris and Walz will appear together in Philadelphia later on Tuesday for the new Democratic ticket's first joint rally.
