Between a few flecks of coral in the Indian Ocean, a ribbon of highway more than a mile long swoops up from the blue. Since 2018, the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge has connected this archipelago’s hyper-dense capital, Malé, and the international airport — expanded by Chinese companies — one island to the east. But China is not alone in chasing friendship with the Maldives. The Maldives, a tiny tourism-dependent country of 500,000 people, barely registers as a blip alongside India and China, the world’s most populous nations. Yet every blip counts in the two giants’ competition for influence across South Asia, and that has set the Maldives on a zigzagging course between them.

Uranium stocks have cooled off in recent weeks, making this a good time for investors to jump in, according to Bank of America. Many of the biggest uranium stocks like Cameco Corp. are down about 14% in February. Since 2021 clean energy ETFs with heavy exposure to wind and solar power have suffered a sharp bear market ( > 30% losses and $2.4bn outflows), but over the same period investors added $2bn into uranium & nuclear power ETFs," Woodard said. An example of a uranium fund that is seeing such a blip is the Global X Uranium ETF (URA) , which is Woodard's top pick in this space. Another uranium fund that Bank of America is bullish on is VanEck Uranium and Nuclear Energy ETF (NLR) .

Biden has eight months to fix his Michigan problem

CNN —If the Democratic voters of Michigan – and a handful of other swing states – are feeling uncommitted in November, Joe Biden could lose reelection. Democratic primary voters in Michigan have the option to mark their ballot as “uncommitted.” In 2012, even President Barack Obama suffered 20,000 such defections. Four years later, Biden rebuilt the blue wall and carried Michigan by around 150,000 votes. Biden has dispatched campaign and White House aides to Michigan to try to explain his politics toward Israel. “The American president can’t say who he wants the prime minister of Israel to be,” Biden campaign official Mitch Landrieu told CNN as the results from Michigan rolled in.

Knee-jerk reaction and poor messaging aside, dynamic pricing isn't really novel and may actually make some sense. Yet two months into 2024, Jerome Powell and his Fed colleagues seems to have nearly pulled off what many would have called a miracle not long ago. Read previewSteep rate cuts from the Federal Reserve could be coming later this year thanks to weakening in the job market, which likely isn't as robust as some of the latest data has made it out to be, according to Wells Fargo strategist Erik Nelson. Advertisement"We need a catalyst, we need some data that shows these recent, strong data were just a blip. But much of that strength may be seasonal and no longer reflected in upcoming job reports, Nelson said. Other market commentators have warned that hiring activity could weaken in 2024 as tighter financial conditions take a toll on businesses. Though the jobless rate is low, continuing unemployment claims are hovering around 1.9 million, according to Fed data.

They expose decades of American corporate philosophy gone awry. A good American company isn’t just a vehicle for financial returns; it is first and foremost an employer, a contributor to economic and/or technological innovation, and a source of US power. But it’s clear that what Boeing — and the entire American corporate body politic — needs is nothing short of a philosophical counterrevolution. Over these three decades of plenty for Boeing’s shareholders, the company’s staff was asked to penny-pinch. Boeing’s stock cratered, and France’s Airbus , a rival once colloquially known as “Scare Bus,” started to eat the American company’s lunch .

An ETF that's down 80% from its all-time high or one that is up 110% from its all-time low? Both of these outlandish percent moves describe the AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (MSOS) , which is down 80% from its February '21 high and now up 110% from its October '23 low. The only discernable point here is the spike in early February'21, which lined up exactly with the ETF's all-time high. The ETF had flirted with piercing this line before – most recently this past fall - but each attempt failed before 2024. Any index, ETF or stock that's in a long-term uptrend is trading above an upward sloping 200-day moving average.

The S & P 500' s latest run to a record high last week took it through an obstacle course of macroeconomic and company-specific hazards. Stocks are not at all cheap, with the S & P 500 at 20-times year-ahead earnings, which probably will mute multi-year returns. The median S & P 500 stock is flat year to date, is up 13% over the past three months, has gained 30% off its 52-week low and is within 8% of its 52-week high. On Friday, even as a majority of stocks fell with the S & P 500 gaining 1%, there were 175 NYSE new 52-week highs compared to 54 new lows. Economists polled by Dow Jones are calling for payrolls to have grown by 185,000 positions, and for the unemployment rate to inch higher to 3.8%. The U.S. population is getting older and per capita health care spending has been rising — other than the pandemic blip — very steadily for half a century. We'll detail a simple trade on a resilient health care industry stock that stands to benefit from that long-term trend. Becton Dickinson (BDX) has a large array of healthcare products and consequently doesn't exhibit the volatility that some other health care companies have like biotech. Unsurprisingly, when we look at the health care sector, we also see consistent long-term growth. Media entrepreneur Byron Allen says he wants to buy Paramount for $14.3 billion. Who wants to buy a big TV company these days, anyway? Investors betting on another strong year for gold may want to look at an obscure part of the market: gold streaming and royalty companies. "The profitability of the gold companies wasn't keeping pace with the rise in the gold price." MacRury echoed this sentiment, pointing to historical context as a reason he believes gold prices could hurtle towards new highs. "Past easing cycles over the last 20+ years have corresponded with strong gold prices, and we expect to see gold set new record highs in 2024," he wrote. Shares of Royal Gold popped 7% in 2023, but are down more than 10% in the past 12 months.

The latest calculations from several science agencies showing Earth obliterated global heat records last year may seem scary. Former NASA climate scientist James Hansen, often considered the godfather of global warming science, theorized last year that warming was accelerating. That’s 0.27 degrees (0.15 degrees Celsius) warmer than the previous record set in 2016 and 2.43 degrees (1.35 degrees Celsius) warmer than pre-industrial temperatures. NASA and the United Kingdom Meteorological Office had the warming since the mid-19th century a bit higher at 2.5 degrees (1.39 degrees Celsius) and 2.63 degrees (1.46 degrees Celsius) respectively. It’s the third time in the last eight years that a global heat record was set.

The 737 Max 9 flown by Alaska Airlines on Friday was delivered less than three months ago. United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, the largest operators of the 737 Max 9, on Saturday said they suspended flights with those planes, forcing the carriers to cancel more than 400 flights. Boeing's leadership has spent roughly five years regrouping after the 2018 and 2019 fatal crashes of its smaller and more popular Boeing 737 Max 8, which prompted a worldwide grounding of both the Max 8 and Max 9, the two types flying commercially. According to Jefferies, the 737 Max 9 represents just 2% of Boeing's backlog of more than 4,500 Max planes. Richard Aboulafia, managing director at aviation consulting firm Aerodynamic Advisory, said the problem on the Alaska Airlines plane appears to be a manufacturing defect, not an inherent design flaw.
