Ford had another month of strong sales, but a wider appeal on Wall Street for the stock depends on cutting the automaker's massive EV division losses. In the first quarter, Ford lost more than $100,000 per EV sold. He also lamented the underperformance of Ford stock relative to rival General Motors — ever since GM announced a buyback in November. However, Jim thinks Ford stock has come down enough. As a subscriber to the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer, you will receive a trade alert before Jim makes a trade.

Ford EV and hybrid sales surge 65% in May
  + stars: | 2024-06-04 | by ( Michael Wayland | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
DETROIT – Ford Motor's U.S. new vehicle sales rose 11.2% last month compared with May of last year, boosted by strong sales growth for all-electric and hybrid models. The Detroit automaker on Tuesday reported roughly 65% increases in sales of both hybrid and all-electric vehicles. The boost to EV sales is a conundrum for investors. The spike in hybrid sales is part of Ford's plan to double down on the technology. Ford reported total year-to-date U.S. sales through May of 877,685 units, up 5.6% compared with the same time period in 2023.

Several investors released a joint letter this month urging fellow shareholders to vote down the package as excessive. Tesla shareholders approved the pay package in 2018, with compensation tied to Tesla's performance including its market value. And he still has time to meet goals he hasn't reached, including on revenue, because the pay package had a 10-year term. In the 440-page proxy statement explaining the vote, a committee of the Tesla board noted the "novel circumstances." Some people began sharing screenshots of their votes in April, shortly after the Tesla board announced the vote, and the deadline to vote online is June 12.

Barra, who is the longest tenured CEO outside of the company's founder, has been asked about retirement for several years. "I'm having a lot of fun, and I want to make sure we have our transformation on a good path," she said during a fireside chat at a Detroit Economic Club meeting. Barra reiterated she serves at the pleasure of the GM board and that she continues to have "fun." Read previewChevrolet is just getting started on its takeover of the electric car market, says Steve Majoros, the brand's chief marketing officer. It's not exactly a great time to put more electric vehicles on sale. But the tides finally are turning in Chevrolet's favor, Majoros said, as EV shoppers gravitate to more practical options and legacy brands. Recent studies on a new cohort of electric car shoppers show that they are more inclined to consider purchasing an electric car from a legacy brand. After years of a virtual monopoly on the EV market, shoppers are growing tired of Tesla and looking for fresher options.

GM's market share in China, including its joint ventures, has plummeted from roughly 15% as recently as 2015 to 8.6% last year — the first time it has dropped below 9% since 2003. DETROIT – General Motors believes it can regain market share in China after hitting a roughly 20-year low last year amid changing market conditions and increased domestic competition, GM President Mark Reuss said Thursday. The market declines have spurred questions on whether GM would exit China, as it has other underperforming markets in recent years. Employees of the Tesla Gigafactory Berlin Brandenburg work on a production line of a Model Y electric vehicle. Tesla has backed away from an ambitious plan for innovations in gigacasting, its pioneering manufacturing process, according to two sources familiar with the matter, in another sign that the electric-vehicle maker is retrenching amid falling sales and rising competition. Tesla has been a leader in gigacasting, a cutting-edge technique that uses huge presses with thousands of tons of clamping pressure to die-cast large sections of the car's underbody. One of the two sources familiar with the automaker's gigacasting operations said the suppliers involved are now adapting Tesla's three-piece process for the next-generation vehicle. Both sources said the automaker decided last autumn to halt work on the more innovative and difficult one-piece casting process.

DETROIT — Ford Motor is announcing first-quarter earnings after the markets close Wednesday. The automaker's 2024 guidance released in February included adjusted earnings before interest and taxes, or EBIT, of between $10 billion and $12 billion; adjusted free cash flow of $6 billion to $7 billion; and capital spending of $8 billion to $9.5 billion. There is less consensus on Wall Street around Ford's performance than there was for its crosstown rival General Motors , which on Tuesday reported strong first-quarter results and raised its full-year guidance. Ford is Morgan Stanley's "top pick," but others on Wall Street are less bullish on the company. Ford has faced years of inflated warranty costs, including $1.9 billion in 2023, which have affected its earnings.
