CNN —Lionel Messi rolled back the years with a vintage performance for Argentina on Tuesday, scoring three goals in his nation’s 6-0 thrashing of Bolivia in a 2026 World Cup qualifier. It was the 37-year-old’s 10th international hat-trick, a tally which draws him level with Cristiano Ronaldo’s record in men’s soccer. It was Messi who got the party started, capitalizing on a defensive error to put his country ahead after 19 minutes. The former Barcelona superstar then whipped the home crowd into a frenzy with two quick goals before the final whistle. Messi was making just his second appearance for his country since July after overcoming an ankle injury.

Since then, I've been to 86 countries and have learned how to travel on a budget. I book directly with local businesses and I embrace public transportation, among other things. Now, 20 years later, I've visited 86 countries on a shoestring budget. It feels more ethical, too, as our money went straight to people living by the river instead of a tour company based elsewhere. If that is the case, make sure to book the tours while you're in the country, as it will save you money.

In pictures: Solar eclipse creates ‘ring of fire’
  + stars: | 2024-10-02 | by ( Kyle Almond | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: 1 min
An annular solar eclipse was seen in parts of South America on Wednesday, creating a blazing “ring of fire” in the sky. Annular solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between Earth and the sun and the moon is near or at the farthest point in its orbit from Earth. The moon doesn’t completely block the sun as it does during a total solar eclipse, which is what causes the ring of fire effect. Although the path of the eclipse tracked over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and Antarctica, only parts of Argentina and Chile, including Easter Island, were able to see the ring of fire.

If you’re in the path of the partial or annular eclipse and plan to observe either celestial spectacle, make sure you have a pair of certified eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer. The eclipse pathThe annular eclipse will begin at 12:50 p.m. A global map shows the path of the annular solar eclipse on October 2. If you don’t have certified eclipse glasses or use a handheld solar viewer to observe the annular eclipse, you can use a telescope, binoculars or camera that has a special solar filter on the front, which acts the same way eclipse glasses would. The small space between will reflect the sun’s crescent during a partial eclipse or a ring during the annular eclipse.

CNN —No trees have grown on the windswept Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean for tens of thousands of years — just shrubs and other low-lying vegetation. “It’s very sort of windswept and barren.”The Falkland Islands are a British-ruled overseas territory over which Great Britain and Argentina fought a brief war in 1982. But the story of this hidden forest goes back even further in time than the researchers initially thought. “The Falkland Islands are currently covered by grasslands and lack native trees,” Donovan added. However, the islands are unlikely to see a return to a forest landscape anytime soon, Thomas said.

Argentina’s poverty rate soared to almost 53% in the first half of the year, official data released on Thursday showed, the first hard evidence of the painful impact of libertarian President Javier Milei’s tough austerity measures. The data underscores how Milei’s spending cuts, aimed at overturning a deep fiscal deficit, have caused major short-term pain. The country is in a deep recession and inflation remains in triple digits, though there are signs things are improving. ‘Any level of poverty is horrendous’Agustin Salvia, director of the UCA’s Observatory, said that there was a significant impact at the start of the year from Milei’s policies. “If you look at the whole story, it shows a deterioration in the first quarter.

The scientists had previously documented orcas (Orcinus orca) in the region chasing both dusky dolphins and long-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus capensis). Dusky dolphins measure about 7 feet (2 meters) long and weigh up to 187 pounds (85 kilograms). The Humboldt Current orcas weren’t eating dolphins exclusively; they hunted leatherback sea turtles, South American fur seals and Humboldt penguins, according to the study. But Humboldt Current orcas have a smaller white eye patch than known Type A orcas. A similar interaction was previously documented in Australia between an orca and a diver, but had never been observed in the Humboldt Current.

Over the years, Israel has viewed “targeted killings” as a way to deter attacks on the county, fuel fear among its enemies and exact revenge. Iran’s nuclear program is closer to building a bomb than ever, even after several nuclear scientists were killed, he said. But the Mossad operation dismayed Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, who demanded the resignation of the spy service’s chief. Almost four decades later, Israel killed a major Hamas official, Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, in a Dubai hotel in a complex plot involving more than two dozen Mossad operatives.
