Fact check: 32 false claims Trump made to Joe Rogan
  + stars: | 2024-10-27 | by ( Daniel Dale | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +20 min
Here is a fact check of 32 false claims Trump made to Rogan. The number of migrants: Trump claimed that at least “21 million” people have illegally crossed the border during the Biden administration. Trump’s Las Vegas crowd size: In his latest exaggeration about crowd sizes, Trump claimed there were “29,000 people” at his event the night prior. Foreign policyTrump and ISIS: Repeating one of his regular false claims, Trump said, “We defeated ISIS in record time. (This appeared to be an inadvertent mistake by Trump, but his claim was still inaccurate, and Trump has repeatedly bashed Biden over such mix-ups.)

As President Joe Biden fought to remain in the presidential race this summer, advisers often argued there existed a “Biden coalition” — a cohort only the incumbent could hold together. A coalition of labor groups targeting union members in battleground states is pointing to Biden’s term in office. Coons noted the vice president has campaigned in Pennsylvania’s biggest cities, but also in places like Wilkes-Barre, Johnstown and Erie to reach the kinds of voters Biden has long considered his base. And for some voters whom Biden won in 2020, the message has shifted away from being about him. The union has held rallies and other organizing events there and in Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada targeting its own and other union members.

Democratic Rep. Colin Allred is giving the polarizing Republican Sen. Ted Cruz a run for his money, presenting him as a do-nothing extremist. There’s added intrigue as Cruz underperformed in his last Senate race in 2018, fending off former Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke by less than 3 points. Republican Larry Hogan won two races for governor of Maryland in 2014 and 2018, defying gravity in the deep-blue state. He’s favored in a red-leaning district previously held by centrist Democratic Rep. Ron Kind. Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez is looking to hang on against Mayra Flores, a Mexican-born millennial who has promoted far-right rhetoric and is seeking to channel a resistance to transgender rights.

Washington CNN —Former President Donald Trump’s late-campaign television ads are littered with deceptively edited and misleadingly described quotations. Multiple Trump ads omit critical words from quotes by and about Vice President Kamala Harris on the subject of tax policy. One Trump ad misleadingly depicts comments about fracking from Trump’s campaign and administration as if they were comments from independent news organizations. Tactic: Cutting out key wordsOne Trump ad deletes critical words from two separate quotes on Harris’ tax policies. Those ads feature on-screen text saying “Harris would raise taxes,” attributing those words to a CBS News article.

Amazon Prime wants to help you save on gas
  + stars: | 2024-10-24 | by ( Erika Tulfo | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
CNN —Prime members can now add “fuel discounts” to their ever-growing list of benefits. Members can avail themselves of the discount by linking their Amazon account to Earnify, a loyalty program app by BP. Amazon’s newest savings benefit could alleviate some of that potential grief for its over 184 million Prime subscribers. How Amazon is retaining its leadFuel and energy probably isn’t the first sector to come to mind when you think of Amazon, but analysts say that the recent inclusion of gas savings doesn’t come as too much of a surprise. “Other retailers are still playing catch up to Amazon, and Amazon wants to retain its lead,” Saunders said.

While many AI companies have focused on training large language models, Groq seeks to make them run as fast as possible using chips it developed called LPUs, or language processing units. The gambit is that as AI models get better, inference — the part where the AI makes decisions or answers questions — will demand more computing power than training will, positioning Groq to reap the rewards. Groq's special (and tightly patented) sauce is its specialized chip design says Ross. Dean asked Ross's team to design a chip based on a specific type of integrated circuit they were using, and the result was Google's first tensor processing unit, a chip designed specifically for AI. Watching the AlphaGo program land a complex "shoulder hit" move on its opponent was validation for Ross that faster inference meant better, smarter AI.

Luccioni codeveloped and regularly contributes to CodeCarbon, a program that helps developers estimate emissions and energy use from running AI models. Bond market investors are having trouble figuring out an economy that looks good from 30,000 feet, but less so closer to the ground. Whether it's payrolls, gross domestic product or retail sales, or a host of other measures, growth looks solid, at the very least. On Wall Street, the general view was of concern: The Beige Book "showed no material improvement in a generally bleak outlook," Citigroup economist Andrew Hollenhorst wrote. However, if growth deteriorates, as the Beige Book indicates it has, that likely would push the Fed towards more reductions. "Despite recent stronger-than-expected data on U.S. employment, retail sales, and consumer inflation, the Fed's latest Beige Book signals a still weakening economy."

"The global battle against inflation is almost won," the IMF report trumpeted, even as it called for "a policy triple pivot" to address interest rates, government spending, and reforms and investment to boost productivity. The fund kept its global growth estimate at 3.2% for 2024 and 2025 — which it called "stable yet underwhelming." Market volatility among key downside risksHeightened financial volatility is another threat to global growth, the IMF report said. Further challenges to global financial markets could come in the final stretch of the fight against inflation. The IMF forecasts global growth will rise 3.1% annually at the end of the 2020s, the lowest level in decades.

The U.S. presidential election is fast approaching, but it may not have as much an impact on markets as people may think, some investors say. History suggests the strong performance bodes well for a post-election pop into year's end. When Trump was elected in the 2016 presidential election, investors expected energy would perform well — but the subsequent two years proved unfavorable for the sector. During the 2000 election, volatility lasted for more than 30 days, through December. "We encourage investors to keep their long-term objectives in mind during periods of uncertainty and position for election related volatility," Guerra wrote.

With voters citing the economy and inflation, abortion, immigration and democracy as top issues in this election, the survey tested a series of policy proposals on those topics, offering clues about which policies could move voters. The survey did not identify which party or candidate is associated with the proposal. While economic policies could move voters toward a candidate, the survey also finds that election denialism could turn them off. Voters across swing groups, including suburban women, independents, moderates and seniors, say they are less likely to support a candidate who denies the election results. The NBC News poll of 1,000 registered voters, 898 of whom were reached by cellphone, was conducted Oct. 4-8.

Cuba restored a trickle of power to its grid by mid-evening on Friday, officials said, hours after the island plunged into a countrywide blackout following the collapse of one of its major power plants. The Communist-run government closed schools and non-essential industry early on Friday and sent most state workers home in a last-ditch effort to keep the lights on after weeks of severe power shortages. But shortly before midday, the Antonio Guiteras power plant, the country’s largest and most efficient, went offline, prompting a total grid failure and suddenly leaving the entire island without power. For many Cubans, far removed from politics and accustomed to regular power outages, the nationwide blackout was nothing more than a normal Friday night. Russia and Mexico, which in the past have sent fuel to Cuba, have also greatly reduced shipments.

Inflation is not deadDaly began her talk with an anecdote of a recent encounter she had while walking near her home. But the conversation encapsulated a dilemma for the Fed: If inflation is on the run, why are interest rates still so high? As evidenced by the young man's question, convincing people that inflation is easing is a tough sell. watch nowThe annual rate of CPI inflation was 2.4% in September, a vast improvement over the 9.1% top in June 2022. However, year-over-year spending increased just 1.7%, below the 2.4% CPI inflation rate.

As the garbage came down, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and then other members of the Texas team walked to the corner of the end zone waving their hands and asking students to stop. They were unable to go sideline-to-sideline or downhill as Georgia met Texas with force every step of the way. The second half got dicey, with Georgia giving up two touchdowns on relatively short fields, one after the controversial interception/overturned pass interference, the other after Georgia for some reason squib-kicked the second half kickoff. In the second half, Ewers returned and led a touchdown drive to open the third quarter. Mykel Williams forced a second Ewers fumble with 10:23 left in the game, thwarting a Texas drive in Georgia territory.

This ability to get electricity from one part of the country to another is ever more important as America’s grid is lashed by increasingly extreme weather. Extreme weather isn’t the only reason the grid needs to expand. “We run a VHS grid for a Hulu economy.”America’s grid is actually three grids: the Eastern and Western interconnections, plus the independent Texas grid. The physical electrical lines connecting all of the systems are fragile and outdated, experts told CNN. Clements cautioned that even a bigger grid can’t solve all the challenges posed by climate change-fueled extreme weather.
