Shomari Figures, the Black Democrat running in an Alabama congressional district redrawn last year by a court order, has won the seat over Republican Caroleene Dobson, NBC News projects. In 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld an earlier ruling stating that Alabama’s district map likely discriminated against Black voters and mandated redrawing the 2nd District. The new area has a majority of Black voters — 47.6%, compared to 45% who are white. His late father, Michael Figures, was an Alabama state senator and his mother serves in that role now. Figures, 39, said he is happy to embrace the role of being an advocate for Black people in his state.

CNN —Hurricane Rafael, a Category 2 with 100 mph sustained winds, is rapidly intensifying in the Caribbean as it bears down on Cuba Wednesday. It will be a strong Category 2 hurricane when it makes landfall in western Cuba Wednesday afternoon, according to the National Hurricane Center. Rafael is the strongest hurricane to roam the northwestern Caribbean in November since 2009, according to data from the NOAA. It’s forecast to become only the fifth hurricane to roam the Gulf of Mexico in November since 1966, according to hurricane expert Michael Lowry. Different forecast model solutions (colored lines) for Rafael's track are overlaid on the official forecast cone (grey) from the National Hurricane Center.

The 2024 election may have shown the mainstream media is losing its grip on political commentary. AdvertisementThe campaigns in this year's presidential election have shone a light on the waning influence of mainstream media. AdvertisementWhile mainstream media outlets are establishing growing audiences on apps like TikTok, young people still tend to get their news from influencers and non-legacy media accounts. Doug Eldridge, founder of Achilles PR agency, told BI that legacy media outlets will use the election to reassess their next steps. "Much like the dinosaurs, the legacy media will either adapt or become extinct."

Trump has been declared the winner in ten states, including Florida, while Harris has won seven. AdvertisementPolls have now closed in the key swing states of Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Each state gets a set number of votes that correlates with its population — if a state has two US senators and three House members, it has five electoral votes. The winner must get at least 270 electoral votes — a majority of the 538 total. She has generally polled better in these states than the Sun Belt states of Arizona, Nevada, Georgia, and North Carolina.

We still don't know who will control the House next year, and it could take days to count votes. But we still don't know who controls the House of Representatives, and the outcome will have major implications for the first two years of Trump's second term. "As more results come in it is clear that, as we have predicted all along, Republicans are poised to have unified government in the White House, Senate, and House," said House Speaker Mike Johnson in a statement on Wednesday morning. A Democratic House would be a major constraint on Trump's powerHistorically, newly elected presidents have typically enjoyed unified government at the beginning of their terms. Allowing those provisions to simply expire would cause most Americans to experience a major tax hike.

In the top-of-the-ticket presidential race, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump entered the day virtually deadlocked in national polling and surveys of the pivotal battleground states. Senate Democrats and House Republicans were hoping to hang on to thin majorities amid fierce competition. Trump planned to gather family, friends and staff at Mar-a-Lago, his resort in West Palm Beach, Florida, to monitor returns. Along with the rest of the country, Trump and Harris must now await the judgment of voters in the seven swing states — Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada — to find out who is right. Senate Democrats are also playing defense in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Maryland.

Boston AP —A jury on Tuesday found an Alabama man not guilty of killing an 11-year New Hampshire girl more than 35 years ago. “I recognize the work and dedication of the jury during their long deliberations in this case,” Tucker said. The body of the Salem, New Hampshire, girl was found in a Lawrence, Massachusetts, trainyard on Sept. 12, 1988, a day after she was reported missing. The family, in statement, said they respected the process but believe McClendon was still guilty of murder based on the DNA results. Strasnick told the jury that the DNA evidence taken from under Tremblay’s fingernails excludes 99.8% of the male population.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to decide a thorny legal dispute from Louisiana involving the state's effort to draw a congressional district map while navigating claims it is unlawfully considering race. One lawsuit claimed that the state had to draw a map containing two majority Black districts to comply with the federal Voting Rights Act. A federal court struck the new map down, but with time running out to finalize the congressional districts before this year’s elections, state officials successfully asked the Supreme Court to put the lower court decision on hold in May. The Supreme Court has a 6-3 conservative majority that, in a surprising move, buttressed the federal Voting Rights Act in 2023 in another racial gerrymandering case involving the congressional map in Alabama. The court will hear oral arguments and issue a ruling in the Louisiana case during its current term, which ends in June.

Given a second chance to resuscitate his young career, Bryce Young produced something equally as rare during Week 9 of the NFL season — a victory for the Carolina Panthers. 1 overall pick of the 2023 NFL draft, who was benched earlier this season after just 18 career starts, led Carolina on a game-winning drive to beat New Orleans 23-22. After the Panthers took over with 3:26 left in the fourth quarter trailing 22-17, Young threw a pair of incompletions before he found Xavier Legette for 26 yards. On the next play, Young threw the ball high downfield, inducing a pass interference penalty that moved the ball 16 yards from the end zone. Less common is the benched starter who returns to earn full favor within an organization that had lost enough confidence to initially sit him.

Election officials warn they’re outmatched and struggling to combat the wave of falsehoods coming from Musk and his platform. Manipulating early voting numbersIn 2020, Trump attacked early voting and mail-in voting, claiming they were used to cheat. Election officials have been inundated with threats of violence since the 2020 election. But Trump and his allies have been laying the groundwork to try to dispute the election should he lose. In Georgia, conservatives sought to allow county election officials to refuse to certify the election results, though the effort was blocked by a state judge.

With so much at stake, CNN has identified 10 races to watch on Tuesday – grouped into buckets that nod to broader themes across the House landscape. Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger decided against seeking a fourth term, instead launching a campaign for governor in 2025. Democratic Rep. Jared Golden has crafted a moderate profile by challenging his party on issues ranging from spending to immigration. This year she faces a challenge from GOP state Rep. Gabe Evans, a fellow Mexican American and a former Army helicopter pilot and police officer. GOP Rep. Zach Nunn, an Air Force officer, was first elected in 2022 – defeating Democratic Rep. Cindy Axne by about 2,000 votes.

The Colbert County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama is asking the FBI to investigate a case involving a Black man whose body was found hanging in an abandoned home amid claims from his wife that his death was made to look like a suicide. The sheriff’s office requested the FBI's involvement in the death of 39-year-old Dennoriss Richardson, whose body was found in September, according to The Associated Press. The sheriff's office did not immediately respond Saturday to a request for comment from NBC News. "The FBI is aware of the tragic death of Dennoriss Richardson and takes allegations of federal law violations seriously," the FBI said in a statement. Colbert County Sheriff Eric Balentine said, according to AL.com, that police spoke to other family members of Dennoriss Richardson who said he had been depressed.

San Diego State seemed to base its defensive game plan around shutting down Jeanty, loading the box to contain Boise State’s run game. That said, clearly this kind of uneven game — especially from Beck — is unlikely to suffice the next two weeks. The only good news for Beck and Georgia: As much as he’s struggling, they’re still 7-1. Widespread skepticism about Richardson’s death underscores deep-seated distrust of local law enforcement in Colbert County. A spokesperson for the FBI’s field office in Birmingham confirmed the FBI is aware of Dennoriss Richardson’s death and is reviewing the allegations of criminal misconduct. Marvin Long, a 57-year-old Black man and lifelong Colbert County resident, knew Dennoriss Richardson’s family well growing up. He shares the skepticism about the suicide ruling and said Richardson’s death has intensified his fear of retaliation. Dennoriss Richardson pleaded guilty to drug possession in 2006 and was sentenced to five years in prison.

David, who has maintained his innocence, was acquitted at trial earlier this year of the most serious charges — first- and second-degree murder. David told investigators he didn’t know about Karen’s second phone, but authorities found the device’s number programmed into David’s work phone, the prosecutor said. At the time of Karen’s death, David had reinjured his knee and was on crutches, Taylor said. (Goodman accused David of faking the reinjury and said he was seen moving hay bales the day before the killing.) David is innocent, Ashley said, and she believes her father is being falsely imprisoned while awaiting a new trial.

LOS ANGELES — California and Nevada voters are weighing whether to repeal legal loopholes in their state constitutions that allow slavery and involuntary servitude to be used as criminal punishment. California and Nevada would join a growing national trend that started with voters in Colorado repealing involuntary servitude in 2018. Slavery and involuntary servitude were banned nationally by the 13th Amendment with one exception — as punishment for a crime. In 2016, Shawna Lynn Jones became the first incarcerated woman to die while fighting a fire in California, according to the state corrections department. "If it means we have to come back to California voters in two years or four years, then that's what we'll do," Nuñez said.

Those rules were designed to prevent a repeat of the abuses of Richard Nixon, who improperly used the Justice Department to punish his political enemies. A new president appoints roughly 300 senior Justice Department officials, including the U.S. attorneys who run offices across the country. All 300 must be confirmed by the Senate, but multiple former Justice Department officials said they fear Trump would install partisans willing to do his bidding. Justice Department officials have risen to the occasion and defied presidential overreach in the past. You go in and just whack a good portion of the workforce,” the former Justice Department official said.

They said the swim school failed to protect them from an alleged predator by insisting that they change in an open area instead of providing them with a private changing area. “Goldfish failed in its basic duties and obligations to protect them from such harm,” states the lawsuit, which was filed in the Oakland County Circuit Court. “There’s nothing we can say about this right now,” a woman who identified herself as a manager at the Goldfish Swim School in Rochester said when contacted Wednesday by NBC News. Aejaz, who lives about 2 miles south of the swim school in Rochester Hills, Michigan, is being held on a $2 million bond. Aejaz allegedly placed the cameras in hospital changing rooms, closets, bathrooms and private rooms.

The pandemic-era 2020 election had the highest ever early vote totals, at more than 101 million, or 63% of all votes cast. But beside 2020, the share of early votes has remained steady since 2012, even as early vote totals have increased. In 2012 and 2016, early votes were about 36% of all votes. This comes as more states offer more options for people to cast their ballot: In 2000, fewer than half the states offered early voting, and as of 2024, only three states — Alabama, Mississippi and New Hampshire — don’t offer in-person early voting. It’s important to not misread early vote numbers or read too much into who has voted thus far.
