All three Banks brothers have denied wrongdoing. An attorney for Philip Banks, Benjamin Brafman, said Monday that federal prosecutors had assured him his client was not a target of the investigation. In addition to seizing the phones of the three Banks brothers, federal investigators also took devices from the city's police commissioner, Edward Caban, and one of Adams' closest aides, Timothy Pearson. At a press briefing last month, Adams spoke of his close ties to the Banks brothers.

In New York City, a group of veteran journalists are trying to fill the gap. The group is tentatively called the New York Editorial Board, according to Semafor editor-in-chief Ben Smith, who helped assemble it in recent weeks. The self-styled board – “a group of journalists grilling politicians,” Smith said – is partly a reaction to The New York Times’ announcement in August that its editorial board will no longer endorse candidates in New York’s local elections. New York CNN —Additional charges against New York City Mayor Eric Adams are “possible” and it’s “likely” there will be additional defendants charged as part of the alleged scheme in the federal corruption case, a prosecutor said Wednesday at a court hearing. Federal prosecutor Hagan Scotten said they have evidence that Adams attempted to tamper with a witness in the investigation. The federal prosecutor revealed new information about the investigation, saying it began in the summer of 2021 before Adams became mayor. The additional defendants could be charged in a superseding indictment or in a separate case, Scotten added. California is banning legacy admissions at private colleges and universities, ensuring that some of the country’s most selective schools will not favor applicants with familial or monetary connections to the schools. Gavin Newsom on Monday signed AB 1780 into law, prohibiting legacy and donor preferences in admissions at private, nonprofit institutions. Schools including Stanford University, the University of Southern California and Santa Clara University will now join the California State University system and other public institutions in the state that have long-banned legacy preferences. This is about making sure we’re leveling the playing field.”The law will affect schools with among the highest rates of legacy admissions — Stanford, USC and Santa Clara. In 2022, legacy admissions accounted for about 14 percent of Stanford and USC’s enrollment and about 13 percent at Santa Clara, according to Ting’s statement.

Lawyers for New York Mayor Eric Adams asked a federal judge on Monday to dismiss the bribery charge included in his federal indictment, saying the government’s allegations are “extraordinarily vague” and failed to prove Adams broke the law. Adams was charged last week with five criminal counts, including bribery, conspiracy to commit wire fraud and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national. He is the first sitting mayor of New York City to face criminal charges in the modern era. “The zealous prosecutors who secured the indictment would have alleged that kind of specific agreement if they had any evidence to support it,” Spiro added.
