In October, world food commodity prices were at their highest since April 2023, according to the most recent data compiled by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. The FAO Food Price Index, which monitors the prices of five food baskets: grains, meat, dairy, vegetable oils and sugar, rose by 2% in October, driven primarily by a surge in vegetable oil prices. The index measures raw commodity prices rather than retail costs, but the increase suggests that higher food prices may continue to affect consumers. While coffee and cocoa prices are not reflected in the FAO index, prices of the two commodities face the "most risk," said Biggin.

But while rival European horologists vaunt the traditions of their centuries-old workshops, design duo Toledano & Chan’s new creation has a longer history altogether: It was carved from a meteorite that slammed into Earth around 1 million years ago. The Brutalist-inspired watch, dubbed the B/1M, was made from part of the Muonionalusta meteorite, the remains of which were first discovered in the Swedish village of Kitkiöjärvi in 1906. Since then, dozens more fragments — scattered around by the force of its collision with Earth — have been found across northern Scandinavia. “You often see meteorite dials; they are not uncommon on watches,” Toledano told CNN via Zoom from New York, where he is based. A slice of the Muonionalusta meteorite (not the fragment used in the watch) shows the material's distinctive structure, known as Widmanstätten patterns.
