His mission was to establish Al Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate, Jabhat Al Nusra. Sharaa is now commanding thousands of men in an armed rebellion threatening to topple the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “This new formation has no relation to any external party,” he said at the time, distancing it from his radical Islamist past. JERUSALEM — The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah appeared on the verge of collapse this week — something that is not a surprise to many Israelis. On Monday night, Israeli strikes on two southern Lebanese villages killed at least 10 people, the nation’s Health Ministry said. That was a response to an earlier Hezbollah attack on Israeli military positions in the disputed Shebaa Farms, which itself was in retaliation for what the militant group said were multiple ceasefire violations. Rockets fired from southern Lebanon are intercepted by Israel's Iron Dome air defense system in northern Israel on Aug. 4. The Oct. 7 Hamas attack changed her calculation.

After nearly two years of friendship bracelets and sparkly bodysuits, Taylor Swift’s record-shattering Eras Tour is finally coming to a close. Her “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” movie, released in October, became the highest-grossing domestic concert film ever by the end of its opening weekend in North America. Starting in Arizona, the 2023 Eras Tour traversed a total of 20 cities across the United States over about five months. Tragedy briefly struck the Eras Tour when a 23-year-old fan died last year at her show in Rio de Janeiro amid extreme temperatures. The rumor mill has churned nonstop throughout the Eras Tour, and Swift’s final show is no exception.

LONDON — The world is entering a “third nuclear age,” the head of the British armed forces has warned, with world-ending weapons once again spreading globally and international agreements to control them collapsing. He also cited China’s rapid development to become the world’s second fully-fledged nuclear competitor to the United States, alongside Russia. Global power is shifting and a third nuclear age is upon us,” Radakin said. Last year, Russia suspended its participation from New START, an agreement that sought to put verifiable limits on Washington’s and Moscow’s nuclear arsenals. And in 2019, then-President Donald Trump withdrew from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces, or INF, Treaty, accusing Russia of violating the agreement.

Another year, another sales record: Retailers again saw purchases hit new heights over Thanksgiving weekend, even as shoppers remain cautious about where and when to spend. In-store and digital retail sales tracked by MasterCard rose 3.4% on Black Friday since last year, with e-commerce purchases surging 14.6%. In fact, online prices were 3% lower during the Thanksgiving sales period than last year, he said. That indicates many consumers are shelling out beyond what it takes just to keep up with price increases. Black Friday is all about deals, but consumers have been more receptive to deals all year.

Athvisions | E+ | Getty ImagesGlobal food prices recently rose to an 18-month high, with some food baskets expected to continue climbing, according to market watchers. In October, world food commodity prices were at their highest since April 2023, according to the most recent data compiled by the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. The FAO Food Price Index, which monitors the prices of five food baskets: grains, meat, dairy, vegetable oils and sugar, rose by 2% in October, driven primarily by a surge in vegetable oil prices. The index measures raw commodity prices rather than retail costs, but the increase suggests that higher food prices may continue to affect consumers. While coffee and cocoa prices are not reflected in the FAO index, prices of the two commodities face the "most risk," said Biggin.

But while rival European horologists vaunt the traditions of their centuries-old workshops, design duo Toledano & Chan’s new creation has a longer history altogether: It was carved from a meteorite that slammed into Earth around 1 million years ago. The Brutalist-inspired watch, dubbed the B/1M, was made from part of the Muonionalusta meteorite, the remains of which were first discovered in the Swedish village of Kitkiöjärvi in 1906. Since then, dozens more fragments — scattered around by the force of its collision with Earth — have been found across northern Scandinavia. “You often see meteorite dials; they are not uncommon on watches,” Toledano told CNN via Zoom from New York, where he is based. A slice of the Muonionalusta meteorite (not the fragment used in the watch) shows the material's distinctive structure, known as Widmanstätten patterns.

These are the most mispronounced words of 2024

The company published a list of the most mispronounced words of the year in the United States and the United Kingdom on Wednesday, including foreign words that have entered the English lexicon for one reason or another, as well as the names of various politicians and public figures. US Vice President Kamala Harris is one prominent entry, with her first name the source of plenty of confusion. “His name is pronounced (key-OH-gin), with a clear “g,” unlike many Irish variations where the “g” would be silent,” said Babbel. If you’re discussing potential purchases, or reports that the company plans to list on the London Stock Exchange, remember that the name should be pronounced (SHE-in) rather than (SHEEN). The Swedish language also contributes two words on the UK list: smokeless tobacco Snus, pronounced (SNOOZ), and flygskam, the name of a movement that aims to discourage people from flying that should be pronounced (FLEEG-skam).
