I bought a house in Cork, Ireland, but I still live in the US for part of the year. My Irish husband lives in the house full time, and I go back and forth between Atlanta and Cork. It's a bit complicated, but I'm glad I have time to figure out all the logistics of moving abroad. AdvertisementYears ago, I had a dream (yes, really) telling me to head to West Cork, Ireland. I've had to be really, really particular about which pieces and belongings I want to take to Ireland because shipping things overseas isn't cheap.

I've gotta say, sadly: It's the Temu version of Temu. It's Amazon's attempt to compete with cheap e-commerce apps like Temu, Shein, and the TikTok Shop. The Haul section of Amazon's app is now in beta mode. The sweater section on Amazon's Haul section has a familiar aesthetic. But for now, to me, it just feels like a sort of crummy version of Temu.

CNN —The FBI announced on Thursday the arrest of a Texas man who allegedly created and disseminated ISIS propaganda and wanted to commit a “9/11-style” attack in the United States. According to Houston’s FBI field office, he admitted to offering his home as a “safe sanctuary” to ISIS operators. “He also discussed his efforts to commit violence in the United States, including considering purchasing a gun, researching military recruitment facilities, and scouting one specific location” in Houston, according to the memo. According to court documents, the FBI has been aware of Said’s support of ISIS since 2017, when he ordered stickers related to ISIS. In follow-up interviews, Said told the FBI he no longer consumed ISIS media and propaganda.

The Trust portfolio is what we use for the CNBC Investing Club. Back in April 2018, Trump ruled then-Twitter — now X and under the ownership of Trump efficiency czar Elon Musk . It was labeled "Trump stock" and a professional announcer, the deep-voice guy we used to use all of the time at the network, recorded it. I pushed the button whenever I was sure that a stock could somehow do well under the first Trump administration. There was no "Trump Stock," "Trump Stock" button pressing for Amazon that day.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump stunned Senate Republicans by announcing Wednesday that he will nominate Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., to be attorney general. Some Senate Republicans said the process won’t be smooth sailing. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, said it will be “a significant challenge” for Gaetz to win enough votes to be confirmed. I can’t even believe it.”Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., a member of the Judiciary Committee, said Gaetz lacks basic qualifications for the job. “We met with President Trump and said, ‘Please, no more House members after Matt Gaetz,’” Scalise said.

Housing-related inflation accounted for half of the monthly rise, and energy prices were flat after dragging down the overall index for four of the past six months. The Consumer Price Index measures price changes across commonly purchased goods and services. Still, October’s increase was to be expected, due to unfavorable comparisons from a year ago and stubborn housing-related inflation. Consensus estimates were for a 0.2% monthly increase and a 2.6% annual increase in the overall CPI, according to FactSet. A potential ‘inflation shock’ in the wingsAlthough the broader US economy survived the sharpest inflation run-up seen in a generation, Americans’ finances — and their sentiment — were far from unscathed.

A bipartisan bill to change Social Security benefit rules for pensioners passed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, with 327 lawmakers voting to support the measure. The proposal — called the Social Security Fairness Act — would repeal rules that reduce Social Security benefits for individuals who receive pension benefits from state or local governments. It would eliminate the windfall elimination provision, or WEP, that reduces Social Security benefits for individuals who worked in jobs where they did not pay Social Security payroll taxes and now receive pension or disability benefits from those employers. About 3% of all Social Security beneficiaries — about 2.1 million people — were affected by the WEP as of December 2023, according to the Congressional Research Service. As of December, about 1% of all Social Security beneficiaries — or 745,679 individuals — were affected by the GPO, according to the Congressional Research Service.

FBI Director Christopher Wray and Donald Trump's team are planning for the possibility that the president-elect will replace Wray during the new administration, three people familiar with the matter told NBC News. Wray, whom Trump appointed in 2017 to a 10-year term, enjoys leading the FBI and had intended to serve out his term, a source said. Wray could resign if he was told Trump wants him gone, as is widely expected. “I assume that’s the best apology that we’ll get from Director Wray, but it is fully accepted!” he wrote. Installing a new FBI director would require confirmation in the Senate, where Republicans will be in the majority starting in January.

With the November elections over, the political analysis and finger-pointing have begun on cable news and within the national Democratic Party. While I’m deeply disappointed with the national result, I refuse to play the blame game. I won re-election 12 months ago by five points in a state that Donald Trump just carried by 30 points. The two internet search firms agreed a joint venture, called the European Search Perspective or EUSP, with ownership split 50-50 between both firms. Why build a European search index? Currently, alternative search engines like Ecosia, Qwant and DuckDuckGo don't develop their own back-end infrastructure. The new venture will see them build their own search index from scratch, however, amassing results from a mix of different search engines. Both companies will use the search index themselves but the tech will also be made available to other independent search engines and tech firms.

The risky mix of antidepressants and college life
  + stars: | 2024-11-11 | by ( Dr. Jill Grimes | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
CNN —Is it safe to drink alcohol while taking antidepressant medications? More than one-third of college students today suffer from moderate to severe anxiety and depressive symptoms, according to the 2023-204 Health Minds Study, and it’s good that many are getting help. About 1 in 5 college students, or 22%, report taking prescription antidepressants within the preceding year, the study found, and about 1 in 3 students, or 36%, has received professional counseling. Drinking alcohol, which ultimately depletes these chemicals, therefore creates more work to improve your mental health, which is the primary reason not to drink while taking antidepressants. No doctor, including me, is ever going to recommend drinking alcohol while taking antidepressants.

CNN —Since September 1, the Ukrainian capital Kyiv has been spared from Russian drone attacks on just one night – October 14. On Saturday night, Ukrainian air defenses detected a record 145 incoming Shahed drones. “We have been doing this for over two years,” he said, but the intensity of drone attacks had peaked over the past two to three months. The drone attacks seem calculated to instil fear rather than cause mass casualties, but several people have been killed in recent weeks.
