The £72 million spent on the coronation could have paid for 24 million free meals for schoolchildren in London, based on the city government’s current budget of £3.00 ($3.75) per meal. Some additional spending came from the Privy Purse, the monarch’s private source of income, a royal source told CNN. “Plans (for the coronation) were scaled back,” the royal source told CNN. The culture department, in its accounts, said it had underspent its budget on the coronation by £2.8 million ($3.5 million).

Texas education officials on Friday approved a new elementary school curriculum that draws from the Bible, the final step of a contentious effort to expand religious instruction in the state. The reading and language arts curriculum, which will be optional for schools, could serve as a model for conservative Christian leaders in other states. Starting in August, the new Texas curriculum, for kindergarten through fifth grade, will be available to districts. The state serves more than two million elementary students in its public schools. To the Editor:Re “Enough,” by Roxane Gay (Opinion, Nov. 17):I empathize with Ms. Gay’s feelings regarding not yielding “even a little” to Trumpism’s “odious politics.” But we also cannot be naïve about what’s necessary to most effectively fight and defeat Trumpism: political power. To win future elections Democrats — increasingly the party of well-educated, well-off citizens who have the privilege of voting based on concerns over the rule of law and cultural issues, not whether they can pay this month’s rent — do not need to cater to all who voted for Donald Trump. They just need to win over a small slice of the electorate that may have voted for previous Democratic candidates but, perhaps holding their noses, didn’t in 2024. They must acknowledge many voters’ fear, anger and insecurity over both major parties failing for decades to adequately address ever-increasing income and wealth inequality — that even when “the economy” improves, too often everyday workers still fall farther and farther behind. And they must relentlessly focus electoral messaging on their plans for how to repair this ever-worsening economic gulf.

Israel pressed on with its bombardment of Lebanon on Friday after issuing widespread evacuation warnings in the country’s south, as the conflict with Hezbollah militants showed no sign of abating despite a U.S.-led push for a cease-fire. Some of the Israeli strikes, which came as Lebanon celebrated its independence day, hit near the southern port city of Tyre, following calls by the Israeli military for civilians to evacuate entire towns in the area and flee more than 20 miles north. Bombings also targeted the Dahiya, the area near Beirut that is in effect controlled by Hezbollah and has been hit hard in recent days. Lebanon’s health ministry said an Israeli strike on Friday killed two paramedics south of Tyre. More than 145 medical workers in Lebanon have been killed in the line of duty since fighting between Israel and Hezbollah began last October, according to the U.N. World Health Organization.

To these stark claims, let me add two supplementary comments that qualify the scale and nature of the shift that I’m describing. First: The end of the post-1989 era doesn’t mean the end of liberalism. Well, maybe. Just before the Fed began its rate-cutting cycle in September, many retailers and their bank partners raised interest rates on their store cards to protect their profits when the federal funds rate — which determines their own interest rates — came down. Now, the average interest rate on a store card is at an all-time high just ahead of the holiday shopping season, which is when most consumers sign up for store cards. That was less than half of the interest rate increase for store cards seen from September 2023 to September 2024, when the federal funds rate didn't budge. When asked why they increased the APR on their store cards, the companies that returned CNBC's request for comment pointed vaguely to industry standards and the current economic environment.
