According to the CCP's plan, by 2020, China was supposed to have "achieved iconic advances in AI models and methods, core devices, high-end equipment, and foundational software." Censorship requirements may slow China's AI development and limit the commercialization of domestic models, but they will not stop Beijing from benefiting from AI where it sees fit. We're not seeing a huge gap between the models Chinese companies have been able to roll out. The current price war is a race to the bottom, similar to what we've seen in the Chinese technology space before. A race to the bottom may simply beggar China's AI ecosystem.

Hong Kong CNN —China’s Chang’e-6 lunar lander successfully touched down on the far side of the moon Sunday morning Beijing time, in a significant step for the ambitious mission that could advance the country’s aspirations of putting astronauts on the moon. China’s most complex robotic lunar endeavor to date, the uncrewed mission aims to return samples to Earth from the moon’s far side for the first time. The landing marks the second time a mission has successfully reached the far side of the moon. The probe will spend two days on the far side of the moon, and 14 hours to collect moon soil samples, Xinhua reported. Last year, India landed a spacecraft on the moon for the first time, while Russia’s first lunar landing mission in decades ended in failure when its Luna 25 probe crashed into the moon’s surface.

CNN —A doping case involving 23 Chinese swimmers took a diplomatic twist on Wednesday after US lawmakers called on the US Department of Justice and the International Olympic Committee to launch inquiries into the controversy. The Chinese swimmers tested positive for trimetazidine, a banned performance-enhancing substance, several months before the Tokyo Olympics – a tournament at which they were allowed to compete in, and went on to win medals at, according to a report from the New York Times released in coordination with German public broadcaster ARD. In a statement released Wednesday, the lawmakers called for an assessment as to whether the alleged doping was “state-sponsored,” adding that could warrant further diplomatic measures by the United States and the international community. CNN has reached out to the Department of Justice, the IOC and WADA for comment. Trimetazidine has the potential to boost endurance and has been banned by WADA since 2014.

CNN —At least two people were killed and another 21 injured in a knife attack in a hospital in China’s southwestern province of Yunnan on Tuesday, state media reported, citing official sources. The attack, described by state media Xinhua as a “violent incident” took place at a local hospital in Zhenxiong county, the news agency reported, adding that authorities were gathering more information. “Multiple videos from the scene also show a suspect being apprehended by police in a [nearby] wellness center,” Guizhou Television reported. Officials have not yet confirmed whether the suspect arrested is the attacker. An eye-witness interviewed by Chinese state media outlet, The Paper, said the situation remained chaotic as authorities worked to assess the situation.

China on Friday launched a space probe to collect samples from the far side of the moon in a mission that has been billed as "unprecedented" as the global space race heats up. An unmanned rocket carrying the Chang'e-6 lunar probe took off from Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province just before 5:30 p.m. local time, kickstarting the 53-day planned mission. The expedition aims to return around 5 pounds of lunar samples to Earth for analysis. "Collecting and returning samples from the far side of the moon is an unprecedented feat," Wu Weiren, chief designer of China's lunar exploration program, said, according to Chinese state news agency Xinhua News.

CNN —Nineteen people have been killed after a highway collapsed in China’s Guangdong province on Wednesday, according to the country’s state broadcaster, CCTV. A section of the express highway connecting Meizhou City and Dapu City in Guangdong Province collapsed at around 2:10 a.m. on Wednesday, leaving eighteen cars trapped, CCTV reported. Southern China has been bombarded with heavy rain in recent weeks. Guangdong province, an economic powerhouse home to 127 million people, has seen widespread flooding, which has forced more than 110,000 people to relocate, state media reported, citing the local government. The floods have killed at least four people in Guangdong, including a rescue worker, state news agency Xinhua reported Monday.

Seoul, South Korea CNN —China’s newest, largest and most-advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian, took a big step to joining the world’s largest naval fleet on Wednesday as it set out from Shanghai for its first sea trials. “The sea trials will primarily test the reliability and stability of the aircraft carrier’s propulsion and electrical systems,” read an announcement from the state-run Xinhua news agency on Wednesday. The warship was launched in 2022 and has “completed its mooring trials, outfitting work and equipment adjustments” working up to the latest sea trials, Xinhua said. CNN —China Southern Airlines is launching its first-ever direct passenger flight from the megacity of Shenzhen to Mexico City, which will set the record as the longest nonstop regular commercial flight to originate in China. The inaugural flight will depart from the Chinese southern metropolis of Shenzhen on May 11, making a 16-hour nonstop journey to Mexico City, according to information available from China Southern Airlines. The upcoming route overtakes China Southern Airlines’ Guangzhou to New York flight, which covers a distance of 12,871 kilometers, as the furthest nonstop commercial flight to depart from a Chinese airport. China Southern Airline’s newest route would knock out Singapore Airlines’ Singapore to Los Angeles flight to take 8th place on the list of the world’s longest flights compiled by aviation analytics database OAG. China Southern Airlines was the first-ever Chinese carrier to operate flights to Mexico, launching the Guangzhou-Vancouver-Mexico City route in April 2017, according to reports from Chinese state media agency Xinhua at the time.
