CNN —Wyndham Clark won the 2023 US Open to claim his first major title on Sunday, edging Rory McIlroy in a nail-biting finale at Los Angeles Country Club. Ross Kinnaird/Getty ImagesFor McIlroy, US Open champion in 2011, a nine year wait for a fifth major title continues. The 34-year-old has now finished inside the top-five at 10 major tournaments since winning The Open and PGA Championship in 2014. Ezra Shaw/Getty ImagesUnfortunately for Clark however, up ahead McIlroy was showing the sort of final round composure befitting of his glittering résumé. Heading into the week, McIlroy had twice as many major titles as Clark had made major cuts – yet the world No.

Yet not everyone has given the host glowing reviews, including the major’s reigning champion Matt Fitzpatrick. And following Saturday’s third round, Fitzpatrick – whose hopes of becoming the first player to defend the US Open title since Brooks Koepka look slim – again spoke about the quality of the course and the atmosphere. Fitzpatrick added: “I’ve seen Brooks’ comments and I tend to agree with what he feels like that about this golf course. Yet firmer greens and fairways brought fresh criticisms of the course, and atmosphere, from Fitzpatrick on Saturday. “Very poor … It’s disappointing on the USGA side,” said Fitzpatrick of the atmosphere, according to Barstool Sports journalist Dan Rapaport.

Fowler leads as U.S. Open third round gets underway

Fowler has already made a mark this week as his two-day 130 total tied the lowest 36-hole U.S. Open scoring record set by Martin Kaymer in 2014. A little different once you get to after 54 holes because that's when things really heat up," Fowler said on Friday. Fowler, who also held a share of the first-round lead with Schauffele, will have his work cut out with a leaderboard that features plenty of top-tier talent. World number three McIlroy, who has gone nearly nine years since winning his fourth major title, will set off in the penultimate group alongside Schauffele two strokes off the lead. World number one Scottie Scheffler, trailing Fowler by five, and British Open champion Cameron Smith, six back, were scheduled to go off at 2:56 PT.

CNN —“Play big.”For the last decade, American golfer Wyndham Clark has carried a two-word rule into every competition. It’s an instruction left by his mother, Lise Clark, who died of breast cancer in 2013 while he was learning his trade at Oklahoma State University. “When she was sick and I was in college, she told me, ‘Hey, play big,’” Clark told reporters after his second round on Friday. So far, Clark's best-ever major finish was a top-75 finish at the PGA Championship in 2021. Having missed the cut on both previous starts at the major, the Denver-born golfer is comfortably on course to beat his best-ever major finish, a top-75 finish at the PGA Championship in 2021.

Fan favorite Fowler seeks to revive career with U.S. Open run

Fowler has not won a PGA Tour title since 2019 and sank to a career-low 185th in the rankings last September. It's been a while since I've felt this good in a tournament, let alone a major," said Fowler. "Being in the lead is nice, but it really means nothing right now," said Fowler, who also had a share of the first-round lead. From there, Fowler closed with a routine par and walked off the course having set a U.S. Open record with 18 birdies through 36 holes. Fowler was asked to describe his emotions now that he has emerged from a lengthy period of struggle.

CNN —Stone-faced and walking, it was an unusually muted reaction from a golfer who had just shot the first hole-in-one of his PGA Tour career and the 51st in US Open history. Then Matt Fitzpatrick, the defending champion, realized and quickly made up for lost time. Having started from the 10th hole, Fitzpatrick shot five consecutive pars before arriving at the adjusted 115-yard 15th hole. “As soon as I hit it I thought that it’s got a good chance of going close,” Fitzpatrick told reporters. The quartet of Doug Weaver, Mark Wiebe, Jerry Pate and Nick Price navigated the 159-yard 6th hole in one swing, and all during the second round.

Johnson leads LIV charge at U.S. Open, two back of leaders
  + stars: | 2023-06-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LOS ANGELES, June 15 (Reuters) - LIV Golf players have made their presence felt at the majors this year and on Thursday it was Dustin Johnson who led the charge with a solid start to the U.S. Open. Two months ago at the Masters, three LIV members finished in the top six, including joint runners-up Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson. "The game has been trending in the right direction, and obviously I feel really comfortable over the golf ball rightnow," said Johnson, who won the LIV Golf event in Tulsa last month. There are 15 LIV Golf members in the 156-player U.S. Open field, down from the 18 who teed it up at Augusta National Golf Club and the 16 who played at Oak Hill. But the U.S. Open marks the first major since the bombshell announcement of a partnership between the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which controls LIV Golf.

CNN —Two record-breakers, a pair of hole-in-ones, and a sea of low scores: Los Angeles Country Club served up a Hollywood blockbuster with a thrilling first round at the US Open on Thursday. The pair of hole-in-one’s highlighted a day of widespread low scoring, as birdies rained down around the North Course. Thursday’s 71.34 scoring average marked the lowest ever recorded in a first round at the US Open, beating the previous low of 72.29 at the 1993 tournament. Fowler’s 10 birdies marked the most ever recorded in a US Open round. “I joked a bit earlier, I think the USGA will be a bit frustrated that the number was that low today,” Scheffler told reporters.

Fowler leads midway through U.S. Open first round

LOS ANGELES, June 15 (Reuters) - American Rickie Fowler held the early lead at the U.S. Open on Thursday with Xander Schauffele in a group one shot back and Masters champion Jon Rahm four adrift midway through his first round at the Los Angeles Country Club. Fowler, runner-up in 2014, started on the back nine and produced six birdies and two bogeys through his first 10 holes. The 123rd U.S Open got underway against the backdrop of the bombshell announcement of a partnership between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and the Saudi backers of the LIV circuit. Defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick is in a group with last year's British Open winner Cameron Smith, one of the breakaway tour's biggest recruits. One of the morning's biggest attractions was an all-American grouping of world number one Scottie Scheffler with twice major champion Collin Morikawa and home favourite Max Homa.

No golf fans followed Rickie Fowler on Thursday dressed the same as he was. A fan called out, “Keep it going, Rickie.” But the reaction was hardly the same as the raucous quasi delirium that the longhaired younger Fowler once elicited. Finally, as he marched toward his final nine holes, the volume began to ratchet up. With five birdies and four pars in the closing nine holes, Fowler shot an eight-under 62. It was the lowest round in the history of the U.S. Open.

PGA Tour and LIV take feud to PGA Championship

ROCHESTER, New York, May 15 (Reuters) - The PGA Tour and LIV Golf take their feud to Oak Hill Country Club for the PGA Championship this week with the Saudi-bankrolled rebel circuit again seeking major validation. That was until world number one Spaniard Jon Rahm came to the PGA Tour's rescue, finishing top of the leaderboard to leave Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson runners-up. Like the Masters there will be 18 LIV members in the field led by twice PGA Championship winners Koepka and 52-year-old Mickelson and Australian Cameron Smith, who signed on with LIV after winning last year's British Open. Rahm and world number two Scottie Scheffler both are in top form coming into Rochester. Spieth, who withdrew from the Byron Nelson citing a left wrist injury, needs only a PGA Championship to join the elite club that includes, Woods, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus.
Moments later, the American tapped home to clinch the Wells Fargo Championship and his first ever PGA Tour title. “Since I’ve been on the PGA Tour, you fantasize about it all the time, and I’ve done it multiple times this year where I catch myself daydreaming about winning. “To do it at this golf course against this competition is better than I could ever have imagined.”Clark celebrates a first career PGA Tour title. It marked the second-lowest score in relation to par in the event’s history, second only to Rory McIlroy’s 21-under in 2015, according to the PGA Tour. Koepka storms into Masters lead

Koepka, who shared the overnight lead with Norway's Viktor Hovland and Spain's Jon Rahm, returned a spotless five-under 67 to set a 12-under target for the afternoon wave that headed out under menacing skies. Resurgent Jason Day had looked poised to challenge Koepka until he stumbled to a double-bogey, bogey, par, bogey finish for a disappointing 72 that put the Australian in the clubhouse seven behind. While Rahm, winner of three events already this season, was always expected to contend at the year's first major, Koepka was not. "I just take it one shot at a time, one hole at a time, whatever I got in front of me," said Koepka. As Koepka was putting the finishing touches on his round, five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods was teeing off.
World number one Scheffler, bidding to become the fourth player to repeat as Masters champion, will go out in the third-last group at 1:36 p.m. Australian Smith, one of 18 players from the Saudi-backed LIV Golf circuit in the field at Augusta National, will set off at 10:54 a.m. ET in the company of 2021 Masters winner Matsuyama on Japan and South Korea's Im Sung-jae. Among other notable LIV Golf players at the year's first major, three-times Masters champion Phil Mickelson will play alongside fellow American Tom Hoge and South Korea's Kim Si-woo. Dustin Johnson, who won the 2020 Masters before making the move to LIV Golf last year, will tee off with Canada's Corey Conners and England's Justin Rose.
Reflective Woods content with 'small victories'

Even last year returning to competitive golf at Augusta National 14 months after a car crash nearly resulted in the amputation of his right leg, a defiant Woods insisted he was there to win. But given the opportunity during his pre-Masters news conference, a reflective 15-time major winner was content to talk of "small victories". "I didn't win the tournament, but for me to be able to come back and play was a small victory in itself," Woods told reporters. "I just have to be cognizant of how much I can push it," said Woods. "I just think it's understanding, picking some guys' brains and figuring out what they need to do to win this tournament."
