Meta is making the model available to the public for non-commercial use, the blog post said. Nonetheless, Meta faces similar legal questions as the rest of the industry around the training data ingested to create its models. In July, comedian Sarah Silverman and two other authors filed copyright infringement lawsuits against both Meta and OpenAI, accusing the companies of using their books as training data without permission. A Meta spokesperson did not respond to questions on the provenance of the audio data.

Microsoft took down a string of embarrassing and offensive travel articles last week. The company said the articles were not published by "unsupervised AI" and blamed "human error." Last week, Microsoft took down a string of articles published by "Microsoft Travel" that included a bizarre recommendation for visitors to Ottawa to visit the Ottawa Food Bank and to "consider going into it on an empty stomach." "This article has been removed and we have identified that the issue was due to human error," a Microsoft spokesperson said. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/IllustrationAug 15 (Reuters) - Russia on Tuesday fined social media site Reddit for the first time for not deleting "banned content" that it said contained "fake" information about Russia's military campaign in Ukraine, RIA reported on Tuesday, citing a Moscow court. Reddit joins a list of sites under scrutiny in Russia for failing to remove content that Moscow deems illegal, including Wikimedia, streaming service Twitch, and Google (GOOGL.O). RIA said the court had fined Reddit 2 million roubles ($20,365). Wikipedia is one of the few surviving independent sources of information in Russia since a state crackdown on online content intensified after Moscow sent its armed forces into Ukraine. Wikimedia has previously criticised the penalties as "part of an ongoing effort by the Russian government to limit the spread of reliable, well-sourced information in the country".

Why tiny homes could be a big deal

It's easy to look at these tiny homes as undersized gimmicks, but there are real use cases. Others are leaning on tiny homes to house homeless veterans. Denver changed its zoning laws to make ADU construction easier, allowing two-story units in some parts of the city. Tiny homes won't fix that, but innovation in zoning and construction, taken with recent data pointing to a surge in residential construction, offer reasons for hope. Some AI models that compete against Stack Overflow were partly trained on the company's data. Online communities, like Stack Overflow and Wikipedia, thrived as hubs for experts and curious browsers to come together and share information freely. In 2021, Prosus, a major backer of Chinese tech giant Tencent, bought Stack Overflow for $1.8 billion. Some five million of Theoderic’s subjects in Italy were Romans. Around 100,000 of them were Goths, most of whom had long ago adopted many elements of Roman culture. They drank Roman wine, used Roman tableware and spoke some Latin. Theoderic treated Goths and Romans as parallel populations who owed different things to the kingdom and required different forms of support. Today, American and European writers wonder if there are any lessons for our quagmires of multiculturalism.

But the unique accounting standards that the industry has long relied on to make those calculations is anything but straightforward. “Hollywood accounting,” as a concept, is so specific to the entertainment business it has its own Wikipedia page. And while experts say this kind of creative accounting is perfectly legal, the tactics involve some of the most fantastical fictions ever devised in Tinseltown. To actually make the movie, the subsidiary inevitably takes on expenses — crew wages, craft services, set design, props etc. That means all of these “creative” expense allocations shouldn’t affect what net profits the studio’s shareholders see.

At the moment, it goes against the grain to bet against A.I. The big tech companies, wagering billions on the new technologies and largely undaunted by their shortcomings or risks, seem intent on forging ahead as fast as they can. While Wikipedia’s licensing policy lets anyone tap its knowledge and text — to “reuse and remix” it however they might like — it does have several conditions. Mixing Wikipedia’s corpus into a chatbot model that gives answers to queries without explaining the sourcing may thus violate Wikipedia’s terms of use, two people in the open-source software community told me. In April, Reddit announced that it would not make its corpus available for scraping by big tech companies without compensation.

I have a friend who says her favorite way to read poetry is in quotation, as isolated lines in paragraphs of prose, such as in this column. You can’t have a personal, favorite part, the way I have a favorite part of “Prufrock” (which changes over time). Some of what’s in “Little Poems” does have a one-and-done feel. Short poems can be facile because they are short — they’re not wasting much of your time, so get over it. It’s unsatisfying in the way of all short unsatisfying poems; the end of any poem is a reward, but bad short poems satisfy too soon.

Researchers found popular GPT-detectors flagged essays by non-native English speakers as AI-written. Systems that detect AI-generated writing are flagging essays written by non-native English speakers as bot-generated, researchers from Stanford University said. In the study published Monday, the researchers ran more than 100 essays written by non-native English speakers through seven popular GPT detectors. The researchers also fed the detectors essays written by US eighth graders who speak English natively. More than half of the essays written by non-native English speakers were marked as AI-generated by the detection systems, the Stanford researchers found.
