Now, with Biden facing an increasingly uncertain political future amid the fallout from his shaky debate performance, Republicans are trying to determine what the Democratic incumbent stepping aside would actually mean for the Trump campaign. “Chaos is our friend,” a person close to Trump said. Even if Biden is not the Democratic nominee, the Trump campaign believes the issues likely to decide the election will remain the same. After Carlson suggested Harris would replace Biden on the Democratic ticket, Trump predicted: “Not really. One Trump adviser told CNN the Democratic handwringing had been expected to blow over within a week.

I’m not leaving,” Biden declared to spooked campaign staff on a phone call on Wednesday as he searched for an elusive comeback. And even a far more competent damage control effort than the White House and the Biden campaign have mounted so far would have struggled to erase that impression. On Wednesday for instance, the White House picked up Biden’s line that he was jet lagged after two trips to Europe in early June. And Biden had the Democratic governors to the White House. The White House and the campaign said the reports were false.

Under the University of Virginia Center for Politics' current projections, there are five true toss-up states: Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Nevada. The reality is that if Biden is stuck playing defense in states Democrats usually win, Trump's return to the White House will be a foregone conclusion. The only question then will be how many Electoral College votes would the former president win. "If Biden's position gets worse, that's when you see maybe a Virginia or New Mexico get in play," Kondik said. On Tuesday, Mr. Biden suffered his first formal call to resign from the race from a Democratic member of Congress. At the White House press briefing on Tuesday, Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, faced a nearly hourlong barrage of questions about the president’s abilities, medications and physical examinations, including whether he had received a neurological test. To the Editor:It pains me to agree with “To Serve His Country, President Biden Should Leave the Race” (editorial, June 30), but even more painful is the reality that President Biden may need to take matters one step further and resign the presidency right now, and allow Kamala Harris to run for president as an incumbent. An advantage of a long primary season is the time afforded to coalesce around the eventual nominee. Four years ago, the Democratic Party determined that Kamala Harris would be a worthy successor to Mr. Biden. As president, she would bring energy and enthusiasm, which the 2024 campaign has been wholly lacking. By resigning now, Mr. Biden would permit the Democratic Party to unite under a candidate who can start at once on the essential task of defeating his predecessor.
