A landlord in London was found to be renting out a four-bed house to 40 tenants. Brent Council released a statement saying that "slum" landlord Jaydipkumar Rameshchandra Valand made £360,000, approximately $457,000, from the tenants at the property in Wembley, northwest London. Valand was previously found guilty of housing offenses at another property in January 2022, when officers discovered he made £1,400 a month from uncontracted tenants. The property had numerous issues, including fire safety violations, waste buildups, unhygienic conditions, and "disrepairs," per the council. Rogue London landlords were fined £8.6 million, or nearly $11 million, in the first three months of 2023, the Evening Standard reported.

Since his protest, praised by the British government at the time, Kyaw Zwar Minn has stayed at the northwest London ambassador's residence, a mansion surrounded by razor wire and CCTV cameras. Britain last year urged Kyaw Zwar Minn to leave the residence, citing pressure from the junta, Reuters reported. Earlier this week Kyaw Zwar Minn was interviewed by police over "an allegation that he trespassed on diplomatic premises," said Neil Swift, his London-based lawyer at Peters & Peters. Myanmar's embassy in London, Britain's Foreign Office and London's Metropolitan Police did not respond to requests for comment. Kyaw Zwar Minn was interviewed by police on Aug. 15 but charges have not yet been brought, according to Swift.

When Charlotte and Angus Buchanan, both 37, bought their home in northwest London’s Harlesden neighborhood in 2019, the garden was so overgrown they “could hardly see the end of it,” Charlotte recalled recently. The couple, who met in their teens, began dating in their 20s and started their design business, Buchanan Studio, in 2018. “We design restaurants, which has led to the kitchen being the way it is,” explained Angus of the professional-grade barbecue setup. In addition to restaurants, furniture, fabrics and brand identity projects, Buchanan Studio produces a few over-the-top events each year. After staging a four-day celebrity wedding, making dinner for a crowd at home feels relatively easy.

Brentford added that Raya had signed a two-year contract extension before moving to Arsenal. Entrepreneur Simon Squibb just spent $32,000 buying a stairwell in London. Squibb says he plans to create office space to help people get new businesses up and running. There are seven landings within the stairwell, each of which Squibb hopes to convert into office space. The listing attracted media attention in the UK as another example of the out-of-control London property market. But for anyone thinking a large closet or a stairwell is the weirdest thing you can buy on the London property market – think again.

LONDON, Aug 2 (Reuters) - A partial pardon by Myanmar's ruling military of jailed former leader Aung San Suu Kyi means "absolutely nothing", her younger son said on Wednesday, calling on Western governments to do more to step up pressure on the junta. Myanmar has been in turmoil since early 2021, when the military overthrew Suu Kyi's elected government and cracked down on opponents of military rule, with thousands jailed or killed. Suu Kyi had won a 2015 election, held as part of tentative military reforms, and her party won again in 2020, before the military complained of election fraud. Kim Aris, the son of Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, poses for a portrait at the Reuters office in London, Britain, August 2, 2023. "But I do not see that this will actually result in any dialogue," he said of Suu Kyi's partial pardon.

When Britain’s prime minister, Rishi Sunak, a teetotaler, dropped in on a west London beer festival on Tuesday, he was looking for votes rather than pints while promoting a government policy that he said would ease the financial squeeze on some of Britain’s drinkers. Yet not everyone is convinced by the new set of alcohol tax rates, which are expected to cut the cost of beer for pub-goers but which have angered many other Britons by raising the fees on most other alcoholic beverages. As Mr. Sunak served a pint of beer at the festival, one bystander heckled him, crying out: “Prime minister! Oh, the irony that you’re raising alcohol duty on the day that you’re pulling a pint.” Another thought Mr. Sunak needed reminding that the drink he was pouring was “not Coca-Cola,” Sky News reported. With high inflation rates eroding living standards in Britain, an election expected next year and Mr. Sunak’s Conservative Party trailing badly in the polls, his government was trying hard to put its best spin on what the new rules would mean for the average voter.

The comebacks have received euphoric reviews, but they are occurring at a starkly different moment for British pop music, compared with the ’90s. In 1996 Newsweek declared London the world’s coolest city. Instead, news articles about the country’s music scene are more likely to touch on venues shuttering — at a rate of one a week this year, according to the nonprofit Music Venue Trust — or the country’s bands, DJs and rappers struggling to tour abroad after Brexit brought in a tangle of red tape. Local news outlets have also lamented the British government’s cuts to arts funding, and warned about the decline of music teaching in schools. Sitting in his West London recording studio recently, Albarn said some things hadn’t changed since Britpop’s heyday.

The travel industry is on high alert for disruption after Europe's peak season last year was hit by cancellations, causing chaos at airports. This summer, air traffic control issues are likely to be the weak spot, according to warnings from Eurocontrol, which manages European airspace. Heathrow Airport security workers on June 23 called off 31 days of strikes planned at Britain's busiest hub. At Birmingham Airport, around 100 security officers and terminal technicians will begin continuous strike action from July 18. The strikes will severely impact the airport's security and terminal maintenance, leading to flight delays, the Unite union said.

Medvedev survives Fucsovics onslaught to reach last 16

LONDON, July 8 (Reuters) - Daniil Medvedev has been making up for lost time as he downed Hungary's Marton Fucsovics 4-6 6-3 6-4 6-4 to match his best ever showing at Wimbledon by reaching the fourth round on Saturday. A year after being banned from playing at the All England Club following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Moscow-born Medvedev survived a wayward opening set to topple an opponent who had won their only previous meeting at a major. But Medvedev trampled on those dreams in the fourth game of the second set, when he broke Fucsovics to love after the Hungarian double-faulted to surrender his serve. Once Medvedev had taken a two-sets-to-one lead by banging down an unreturnable serve, Fucsovics needed an injury time out to get his right ankle manipulated and strapped up by the trainer. He got back on his feet and even earned a break point in the eighth game of the fourth set.

The Czech ninth seed needed four set points to seal the first set as menacing dark clouds hovered over Court Two, with her 225th ranked opponent slapping a service return long. A clearly distracted Stevanovic struggled to forget the incident and ended up being broken after Kvitova's service return kissed the line. Following a two-hour rain break, Kvitova appeared determined to make her greater firepower count, although the final game turned into an almighty tussle of wills. After watching three match points disappear thanks to Stevanovic's dogged resilience, Kvitova finally triumphed on her fourth attempt to seal a last-16 showdown with either 2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu or Tunisian sixth seed Ons Jabeur. In one scene of George Benjamin’s new opera “Picture a Day Like This,” which premieres on Wednesday at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in France, a composer and her assistant cut off an interviewer midsentence. The composer asks whether there’s space in her schedule to speak; “five minutes,” the assistant replies. If the premiere of “Picture a Day Like This,” written with the playwright Martin Crimp, is highly anticipated, that is because anticipation has long accompanied new works by Benjamin, 63. Earlier stage works with Crimp, “Written on Skin” (2012) and “Lessons in Love and Violence” (2018), have quickly entered the repertory of major European opera houses. But it is their first opera, the one-act “Into the Little Hill,” from 2006, that most resembles “Picture a Day Like This,” in its size, duration and subject matter.
