Beirut CNN —Killing Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was a step toward changing “the balance of power in the region for years to come,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared Saturday. In June 1982, Israel invaded Lebanon with the goal of crushing the Palestinian Liberation Organisation. This new group, with Iran’s help, proved to be far more lethal and effective than the Palestinian militants Israel had successfully driven out. People gather near the site of the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut's southern suburbs, Sunday, Sept. 29, 2024. Beyond Lebanon and Israel, there is the example of the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, a lesson in the wages of unfettered hubris.

Ukraine narrowly won the battle of Irpin in the war's earliest days. That's the conclusion of American and British experts who examined the fighting along the Irpin River northwest of Kyiv. "The Battle of Irpin River was a close-run thing," wrote Richard Sladden, Liam Collins and Alfred Connable in an article in British Army Review, a British military magazine. An attack in the east and south of Ukraine was the most likely course of action, therefore Ukrainian forces were primarily arrayed against this." Russian forces weren't prepared to rapidly deploy pontoon bridges to replace those across the Irpin River that Ukrainian troops had blown up.

JERUSALEM — Almost 12 months of unbridled war, death, destruction and suffering in Gaza have proved the deadliest conflict on record for journalists. The majority, 111, were Palestinians killed in Gaza, three were Lebanese and two were Israeli journalists killed by Hamas militants on Oct. 7. The majority were killed in Gaza, including Al Jazeera’s Ismail Al-Ghoul and his freelance cameraman Rami Al Refee, both 27. “The thing is no one is safe in Gaza,” she said last month when asked if she thought Israel was deliberately targeting journalists in Gaza.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defiantly faced an international community from which he has become deeply isolated amid international condemnation of Israel's war in the Gaza Strip and the military's fresh escalations in Lebanon. As the General Assembly president called the room to order, groups of diplomats stood up and walked out of the room, leaving a sparse audience on the delegate floor. More than 40,000 people have been killed in Gaza in Israel's ensuing war with Hamas. Earlier this month, the General Assembly passed a historic, if symbolic, resolution with an overwhelming majority, demanding that Israel withdraw from the Palestinian territories within a year. The resolutions, like all General Assembly resolutions, are nonbinding and were resoundingly ignored by Israel.

CNN —The United States is working urgently on a plan to mediate a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, according to three sources familiar with the matter, as officials eye with deepening concern the prospects of a widening conflict. The efforts come as Israel’s top general said Wednesday that the Israeli military is preparing for a possible ground incursion into Lebanon. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has given the green light for his government to engage with the US efforts, an Israeli official told CNN. Amos Hochstein, a senior White House adviser, is involved, the source said, adding that the Americans are not talking to Hezbollah directly. Because while there’s a very legitimate issue here, we don’t think that war is the solution,” he told NBC News.

Harris builds momentum over TrumpWith just over six weeks until Election Day, a new national NBC News poll finds Vice President Kamala Harris with a 5-point lead over former President Donald Trump among registered voters, 49% to 44%. Israel and the Hezbollah militant group exchanged heavy fire across Lebanon's border on Sunday, fueling fears of a wider conflict in the region as the monthslong war in Gaza continues to rage. “Dozens of rockets hit Israel which destroyed homes, cars and communities.” Israel Defense Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said on X. In a separate statement, the IDF said roughly 150 rockets, cruise missiles, and drones were launched at Israel. “This is a blatant attack on the Al Jazeera channel and Al Jazeera Network and those who are working with them, as well as on the freedom of speech and the task of delivering the truth,” al-Omari told Reuters. Last week, Israel’s government announced it was revoking the press credentials of Al Jazeera journalists in the country, four months after banning the channel from operating inside Israel.

Video broadcast by Al Jazeera showed one soldier informing Omary of a military order to close Al Jazeera’s office for 45 days. Shortly after, as Israeli soldiers approached Omary, the live video feed was cut, and Omary could be heard saying that soldiers had taken the camera and broadcast equipment the team had been using. However, Al Jazeera has continued operating in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and in the Gaza Strip, territories that the Palestinians hope to have for their future state. Al Jazeera denounced the move as it continued broadcasting live from Amman in neighboring Jordan. The network later aired what appeared to be Israel troops tearing down a banner on a balcony used by the Al Jazeera office. "There is a court ruling for closing down Al Jazeera for 45 days," an Israeli soldier told Al Jazeera's local bureau chief, Walid al-Omari, in the live footage.

The videos first emerged on social media Thursday and show Israeli soldiers on a rooftop near the town of Qabatiya, west of Jenin, in the north of the West Bank. Another video showing more of the incident from a different angle shows three men throwing three bodies from the rooftop, one by one. Israeli soliders kick the body of a man on the roof of a building in Qabatiyah in the occupied West Bank. Palestinian health officials said earlier this month that nearly 700 Palestinians have died in the West Bank since the Oct. 7 attacks, which Israeli officials said killed 1,200 people and saw some 250 taken hostage.

CNN —United Nations members voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to demand that Israel end its occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months. Fourteen countries voted against, including the United States, Hungary, Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Fiji, Malawi, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Tonga, and Tuvalu. In its advisory opinion, the ICJ said Israel should end its occupation “as rapidly as possible.” The UN’s resolution gives a 12-month timeline. During the 1967 war, Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Golan heights from neighboring Arab states. The Palestinians want the West Bank and Gaza for a future state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

LONDON — Two alleged art thieves will appear in court in London next month accused of stealing “Girl With Balloon,” a famous painting by the mysterious British street artist Banksy. Larry Fraser, 47, from east London, and James Love, 53, from Essex, were both charged with non-residential burglary and placed in police custody on Thursday. The artwork — which shows a little girl letting go of, or perhaps reaching out for, a heart-shaped balloon — was stolen from a gallery in central London on Sept. 8 at 11:00 p.m, police said. The painting was the only item stolen and police said it had been recovered and would be returned to the gallery. More than a half-million children in Gaza have received a first dose of the polio vaccine, the World Health Organization said Thursday. So far, Peeperkorn said, 552,451 kids received the oral drops of the polio vaccine during brief moments of humanitarian pause in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. “Everywhere the team has gone, parents are doing all they can to ensure their child does not miss vaccination,” Peeperkorn said. Another NGO, MedGlobal, has given approximately 5,000 doses of the polio vaccine in Gaza. The strain that was found is linked to a polio vaccine that has not been used in the U.S. since 2000, but is still used in other parts of the world.

The Israeli military said Tuesday that an American woman who was killed during a protest in the occupied West Bank last week was "likely" hit "unintentionally" by Israeli fire. Eygi’s family said she was peacefully demonstrating when she was killed and that video showed the bullet appeared to come from an Israeli military shooter. They had separately called for an independent U.S.-ordered investigation and said an Israeli investigation would not be enough. A Federal Bureau of Investigation probe into the 2022 killing of another American in the West Bank, veteran Palestinian American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, remains ongoing. Israel refused to cooperate with the FBI's investigation and to date no one in the Israeli military has been prosecuted.
