Dollarization would end inflation risks in Argentina, said former IMF board member Mark Rosen. It wouldn't necessarily deal with the spending issue, but it would anchor monetary policy, and be a big positive change." But critics of Argentina's dollarization idea have previously pointed out that it would be handicapped by the shortage. But not every IMF official shares his take. Though the lender has not officially weighed in on dollarization, Argentina's economic situation does matter to it.

Some creative programming — including shows imported from other countries, competition series and the broadcast arrival of the Paramount Network hit “Yellowstone” — will round-out gaps in the TV schedule. The limited series also stars Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie and debuts Nov. 2. “The Continental” debuts Sept. 22. SIGNS OF STRIKESThere are also programs coming to TV this fall that are obvious time-fillers to help round out primetime schedules. Fox has leaned in heavily to competition shows.

FRANKFURT, Sept 14 (Reuters) - Bayer's (BAYGn.DE) new CEO plans to cut management jobs to speed up decision-making as a first step to overhaul the embattled German industrial group, which is facing investor pressure to break up, three people familiar with the matter said. But the new CEO will likely have only a short respite period to come up with concrete strategic proposals. Anderson has been tasked with reviving Bayer's share price, which has underperformed rivals, weighed down by the lingering costs of U.S. weedkiller litigation. Anderson said last month he was not ruling out any options as part of his review of the company's strategy and structure, saying he was "leaving no stone unturned". He added he would provide an initial update in the coming months and detailed plans in early 2024.

VACCARELLO’S DEBUT FOR Saint Laurent wasn’t as rapturously received as Yves Saint Laurent’s for Dior. “Anthony has been scrutinized and told his dresses were too vulgar or too sexy,” he says. At the beginning of his tenure at Saint Laurent, it sometimes seemed like Vaccarello was art directing someone else’s movie. The "sick man of Europe" moniker has resurfaced in recent weeks as manufacturing output continues to stutter in the region's largest economy and the country grapples with high energy prices. It "has to do with the automobile industry, which is the heart of the German industry and many things hinge on that," he said. Germany reported a foreign trade deficit for the first time in decades in May 2022, totaling 1 billion euros ($1.03 billion). Plunge in business sentimentSinn said investor doubts about the feasibility of Germany's sustainability goals also play into the description of the country as the "sick man of Europe." Uncertainty about energy prices has likely contributed to a "plunge" in business sentiment, Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Berenberg, wrote in the note.

Some of that reshaping should also be evident in “Unnamed Figures: Black Presence and Absence in the Early American North,” at the American Folk Art Museum (Nov. 15-March 24, 2024). This landmark effort will explore Black visual culture in New England and the Mid-Atlantic states from 1780 to 1850 in a presentation of around 125 portrait and landscape paintings, photographs, prints, needlework and stoneware jars, along with a 300-page catalog. Two of the New York’s most cherished alternative spaces, both founded in 1972, are staging solo surveys of pioneering artists of different generations and distinctly dissimilar sensibilities. Tiravanija (born in 1961) threw down the gauntlet in the 1990s with SoHo gallery exhibitions in which he made and served pad Thai (1990, at Paula Allen) and Thai vegetable curry (1992, at 303 Gallery). 8 easy — and cheap — ways to cut your carbon emissions

Here are some easy — and inexpensive or no-cost — ways to reduce your carbon footprint today, according to efficiency and environmental experts. As such, the average household saves about $225 in energy costs per year by switching to LED lighting, the Energy Department said. Cut food wasteErlon Silva - Tri Digital | Moment | Getty ImagesThe average American wastes more than 400 pounds of food a year. A washing machine spends 90% of its energy to heat water, for example, the Consumer Federation of America said. Even putting something like a brick in your toilet tank will displace — and therefore save — water.

Werner Herzog, acclaimed German director, narrated an audiobook of AI-generated poetry. The book was a collaboration between childhood friends Brent Katz, Josh Morgenthau, and Simon Rich who reconnected with Dan Selsam, another childhood friend and current OpenAI scientist, at a wedding, Katz told Insider over email. The resulting collection of dozens of poems released on August 1 is told from the AI's own perspective. After the book's publisher made contact with Herzog, Katz managed to connect with him directly over email. "On one performance (I forget the poem), he was so happy with his first take that he said, 'And in fact, I refuse to do it again,'" Katz told Insider of directing Herzog during recording.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) did not announce that central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) must be “implanted under your skin” for an individual to participate in society, as claimed in social media posts. The claim stems from an article published on July 10 by the People’s Voice website with the headline: “WEF Says CBDCs Must Be ‘Implanted Under Your Skin’ if You Want To Participate in Society" (ghostarchive.org/archive/QjVJW). The WEF did publish a white paper in June 2023 on the implementation of CBDCs, but it contains no mention of a need for people to implant CBDCs to engage in society (here). In the video, Werner criticises the concept of CBDCs, and questions at the end of the interviews what CBDCs will look like in the future. There is no evidence that the WEF announced CBDCs must be implanted into an individual’s skin for them to participate in society and the article making that claim cites an economist who is not affiliated with WEF.

If artificial intelligence had a voice, what would it sound like? Calm, like HAL 9000? For the editors of “I Am Code: An Artificial Intelligence Speaks,” a collection of poems generated by A.I., the answer was obvious: Werner Herzog. The 80-year-old German director, actor and author is a titan of independent cinema whose films often concern the hubris and folly of humankind. His speaking voice, known to audiences mostly through the stark, literary voice-over narration that accompanies many of his documentaries, carries an existential pathos and Teutonic gravitas that have made it a pop culture trademark.

While Oppenheimer will always be recognized as the father of the atomic bomb, his early contributions to quantum mechanics form the bedrock of modern quantum chemistry. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation offers a way to simplify the complex problem of describing molecules at the atomic level. This field, known as computational quantum chemistry, has grown exponentially with the widespread availability of faster, more powerful high-end computational resources. Nevertheless, the application of quantum chemistry made possible by the Born-Oppenheimer approximation will continue to expand and improve. In the future, a new era of quantum computers could make computational quantum chemistry even more robust by performing faster computations on increasingly large molecular systems.

An ‘Oppenheimer’ Reading List

Rhodes’s Pulitzer-winning book has been having a renaissance among people grappling with the potential destructive force of other new technologies. Writing in The Atlantic, Charlie Warzel called it “a kind of holy text for a certain type of A.I. researcher — namely, the type who believes their creations might have the power to kill us all.”Long before “Oppenheimer,” a different portrayal of atomic science captured my imagination. (I think it works best as a live play, but if you’re looking for streaming options, the BBC did make a television version starring Daniel Craig in 2002 and a radio version starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Simon Russell Beale in 2013.) But inside, readers found that the entire thing was devoted to one single article: “Hiroshima,” by John Hersey.
