CNN —Described as “disgusting” with “horrifying” conditions, the detention center music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs now calls home is a far cry from the Miami and Los Angeles mansions he once lived in. A federal judge denied Combs bail Wednesday saying the bail proposal set forth by his defense attorneys was “insufficient” in addressing the court’s concerns. This after the Federal Bureau of Prisons shuttered its Manhattan complex shortly after multimillionaire financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein died by suicide in 2019. A month later, inmate Edwin Cordero died in a fight that broke out inside the prison. The incident prompted a Justice Department investigation assessing whether the Bureau of Prisons had “adequate contingency plans” to address inmate living conditions.

CNN —Donald Trump’s obsession with election fraud that doesn’t exist in any significant form could drive the country into a government shutdown — and may even put the Republican House majority at risk. But given the tiny House GOP majority and Trump’s looming presence, every step the speaker takes will be perilous – especially if he hopes to cling to his job if Republicans succeed in holding the House in November. Trump seems to be setting the GOP up for an intra-party fight that could turn into a disaster in November. Win McNamee/Getty ImagesA potential self-inflicted wound for the GOP in Trump’s birth stateIronically, Trump was on Wednesday in the state where his stand could wreak the most political damage for House Republicans. The second sign was that Nasrallah’s address – his first since two waves of attacks detonated thousands of Hezbollah wireless devices earlier this week – was very possibly pre-recorded. The leader of the powerful militant group has not delivered a speech in person since the start of Lebanon’s last all-out war with Israel in 2006. In his speech last month, for example, Nasrallah referenced two sonic booms caused by Israeli jets that had broken the sound barrier over Beirut. The roar reverberated throughout the city yet the Beirut-based militant leader neither flinched nor referenced the incident during his speech. Israel’s fighter jets seemed intent to underscore the gains of Tuesday and Wednesday’s attacks on Hezbollah’s wireless devices: the group had been driven deeper underground.

WASHINGTON — House Republicans on Wednesday are expected to derail their own plan to avert a government shutdown at the end of the month, with the party divided over the length of a short-term funding bill and what, if anything, should be attached to it. Democrats, who want a “clean” three-month funding patch with nothing attached, and nearly all plan to vote no. But the overwhelming majority of rank-and-file Republicans back Johnson’s move, saying holding the vote will put lawmakers on record. Everyone.”Davidson, who was ousted in July from the far-right House Freedom Caucus, lamented that Republicans have failed to unify behind a plan weeks before the election. That would buy time for bipartisan negotiators to strike a longer-term funding deal during the lame-duck session for fiscal year 2025 — if a short-term bill can pass the House.

North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday toward its east coast, South Korea and Japan said, days after Pyongyang unveiled a uranium enrichment facility and vowed to beef up its nuclear arsenal. “We strongly condemn North Korea’s missile launch as a clear provocation that seriously threatens the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula,” the JCS said in a statement, vowing overwhelming responses to any further provocations. About 30 minutes after its first missile notice, Japan’s coast guard said North Korea fired another ballistic missile. The North fired several short-range ballistic missiles last Thursday, the first such launch in more than two months, which it later described as a test of a new 600-mm multiple launch rocket system. South Korea’s JCS has said the launch might have been to test the weapons for export to Russia, amid intensifying military cooperation between the two countries.

Those hacked devices ranged from webcams to DVRs to routers, and about half of them were located in the US, according to Wray. That Chinese hacking unit is preparing to “wreak havoc and cause real-world harm” to the US, Wray told Congress in January. Lumen researchers are watching for signs that the Chinese hackers will resurrect the botnet. How to make the Fed rate cut work for you

In its August survey of car shoppers, a majority (64%) said a Fed rate cut likely would affect the timing of their purchase. But here’s the thing: Car loan rates are pretty high — the average is 7.1% for new cars and 11.3% for used cars, according to Edmunds. If you do buy a home this year and are considering buying down points to reduce your mortgage rate, crunch some numbers first, Diodato advised. That’s because you will pay thousands of dollars to buy down your mortgage rate now, and then thousands more in fees to refinance. What to do if you’re not near retirement: Reconsider how much money you’re keeping in cash or cash-equivalent investments.

CNN —United Nations members voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to demand that Israel end its occupation of Palestinian territories within 12 months. Fourteen countries voted against, including the United States, Hungary, Israel, Argentina, Czechia, Fiji, Malawi, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Tonga, and Tuvalu. In its advisory opinion, the ICJ said Israel should end its occupation “as rapidly as possible.” The UN’s resolution gives a 12-month timeline. During the 1967 war, Israel captured the West Bank, East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Golan heights from neighboring Arab states. The Palestinians want the West Bank and Gaza for a future state, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

How rate cuts workCentral banks cut interest rates for two main reasons: financial conditions are expected to worsen drastically, or inflation has cooled so much that leaving interest rates at high levels will be overly restrictive and put a drag on the economy. The Fed lowers its target rate by buying more securities, namely Treasury notes and mortgage-backed securities. When they have more money to lend out, they don’t need to charge such high interest rates on mortgages and other types of loans they offer. Business' hiring decisions can be influenced by the Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions. When the Fed lowers or raises rates, it takes a while for the full effect of those moves to be felt across the economy.

Many mental health advocates worry whether the Georgia community will receive the mental health support it is likely to need in the wake of the shooting. Andy Miller for KFF Health NewsSo health providers worry that in the coming days, months, and years the community will struggle to find help for their mental health needs. Georgia ranks nearly last among states in access to mental health care resources, according to Mental Health America, a nonprofit that advocates for increased mental health spending. The lack of mental health care remained a top concern in the region during a follow-up assessment in 2022. But immediately following the shooting, mental health providers across the region still had to cobble together free resources for area residents.

But what appeared to garner a lot more attention was the 0.3% monthly rise of the core CPI gauge, which excludes food and energy. The higher-than-expected rise in core inflation will likely cause central bank officials to proceed more carefully when deciding whether to cut interest rates and by how much. On Tuesday, traders were pricing in a 34% chance the Fed would cut rates by a half point. But after the CPI data was released Wednesday morning, traders priced in a 15% chance that would happen. Wednesday’s market moves are a stark contrast to Monday’s, when the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all closed 1.2% higher.

CNN —Pressure is building on President Joe Biden, including from within his own party, to loosen the restrictions on Ukraine’s use of US-provided weapons to strike deep inside Russia. On Tuesday, the bipartisan congressional Ukraine caucus called on Biden to allow Ukraine to strike targets inside Russia with the long-range weapons. A group of key House Republican also urged Biden to ease the restrictions in a letter on Monday. On Tuesday, asked if the US will lift the restrictions, Biden answered, “we’re working that out right now.”Two US officials later told CNN that the Biden administration is not anticipating any policy changes when it comes to lifting restrictions. Asked about Trump’s comments, Sybiha, the Ukrainian foreign minister, also downplayed them.

CNN —The number of available jobs in the US shrank more than expected in July, an indication that demand for workers continues to wane amid a cooling labor market. Wednesday’s data is the first in a series of critically important economic metrics released this week about the US labor market, culminating with the Friday jobs report. As the labor market has slowed, it’s come back into balance: There are now nearly 1.1 jobs available for every person looking for one. The monthly jobs report for July showed gains of just 114,000 — far below expectations — and the unemployment rate shot to 4.3% from 4.1%. Separately, annual labor market data revisions showed job gains for the year ending March 2024 were less robust than initially thought.

Bangkok, Thailand CNN —Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been removed from office after a court ruled he had violated the constitution, in a shock decision that plunges the kingdom into further political uncertainty. But Wednesday’s ruling shocked political analysts who believed the court would side with the prime minister. Pheu Thai and the establishmentPopulist Pheu Thai is the latest incarnation of parties aligned with divisive former leader Thaksin, who was ousted by the military in a 2005 coup. His dramatic return from a 15-year self-imposed exile last year coincided with the Senate’s vote to appoint Srettha as the country’s 30th prime minister. With Srettha now out of office, political negotiations will restart, with coalition partners jostling for Cabinet positions and the top job.

Thailand’s Constitutional Court dismissed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from office on Wednesday, throwing the country into fresh turmoil and creating deeper uncertainty about the political future of Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy. In a 5-4 verdict, the court ruled that Mr. Srettha, who took office almost a year ago, violated moral and ethical standards set out in the constitution because he appointed an ally of his benefactor, Thaksin Shinawatra, to his cabinet. Mr. Srettha was seen as a figurehead prime minister, with Mr. Thaksin playing a powerful behind-the-scenes role. Wednesday’s ruling served as a warning to the ambitions of Mr. Thaksin, himself a former prime minister and long a foil to Thailand’s royalist-military establishment. Last week, the same court ordered the disbandment of the Move Forward Party, a progressive party that won last year’s election but was blocked from forming a government.
