The outcome of upcoming elections in the world's leading economy is set to ripple into global markets no matter who clinches leadership of the White House, UBS head Sergio Ermotti told CNBC on Wednesday. "We do expect, no matter who wins and the outcome, we do expect some market movements. Markets are bracing as voters flock to the polls on Nov. 5, with the U.S. holding both the world's foremost reserve currency and the largest stock exchange by market capitalization. Under a [Donald] Trump presidency, we see that as being inflationary on the back of his focus on immigration and on tariffs. But we don't see any outcome as being particularly growth positive.

Overall S & P 500 profit growth is tracking below what analysts anticipated heading into the reporting period. Still, the S & P 500 is less than 1% below a record high reached earlier this month. Solita Marcelli, UBS Global Wealth Management chief investment officer for the Americas, also warned that high valuations could be a problem for megacap tech stocks as earnings roll out. Technical patterns based on price charts aren't too favorable, either, heading into megacap tech earnings. The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) in June hit its highest level relative to the S & P 500 since March 2000 , when the dot-com bubble peaked.

There is uncertainty abound about the future direction of the stock market heading into what many say is the most important presidential election of our lifetimes. In the elevated volatility levels that began in late September heading into the election. The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX in black) trades with an inverse relationship to the S & P 500. As the S & P 500 goes lower, people become fearful as they buy put option protection pushing the general level of option prices (both puts and calls) higher. This creates the inverse relationship of VIX and S & P 500.

U.S. equity futures jumped as investors looked for a batch of megacap technology earnings to keep driving the Nasdaq Composite to new heights this week. Weekend airstrikes by Israel against Iran did not target oil or nuclear facilities as was feared and oil futures were lower in early trading. S&P 500 futures gained 0.4% and Nasdaq 100 futures increased by 0.5%. Both the Dow and S&P snapped a six-week winning streak, but the Nasdaq eked out its seventh positive week in a row. "One thing we expect to see play out is these megacap tech names continuing to reinforce commitment to AI in tech spending broadly," Yung-Yu Ma chief investment officer at BMO Wealth Management, told CNBC.

LONDON — British bank Barclays on Thursday reported £1.6 billion ($2 billion) net profit attributable to shareholders for the third quarter, beating expectations. The result compared with the £1.17 billion net profit forecast in an LSEG poll of analysts and was 23% higher than the same period in 2023. In the second quarter, Barclays net profit fell slightly year-on-year amid lower income at its U.K. consumer bank and corporate bank, as net profit jumped 10% at its investment bank. Corporate bank income was 1% higher due to a rise in average deposit balances, while investment banking income gained 6%. Amid declines, income at Barclays' private U.S. consumer bank dipped 2% year-on-year as its wealth management unit fell 3%.

But there are some weak points — like a growing federal debt load. There are a few less-rosy data points out there, like rising long-term unemployment and a historically high level of federal debt. Federal debt is high compared to GDP, even looking beyond the spike of the debt as a share of GDP during the pandemic. While federal debt as a share of GDP was slightly above 100% before the pandemic, recent figures are much higher than in the past. Federal debt was 120% of GDP in the second quarter of this year.

The art market is in a correction as big spenders fade
  + stars: | 2024-10-24 | by ( Robert Frank | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +5 min
The number of wealthy collectors surveyed who plan to purchase art in the next year fell to 43% from over half in 2023. The median spending on art by wealthy collectors remains stable at around $50,000 a year, according to the survey. Higher interest rates also raised the opportunity cost of buying art, since wealthy collectors could earn an easy 5% or more from cash and Treasuries. Just as in the classic-car market, the art market is going through a generational shift that's created a mismatch between supply and demand. According to the survey, the high end of the art market, or works priced at $10 million or more, was the strongest before 2022.

Morgan Stanley is expanding the use of OpenAI-powered, generative artificial intelligence tools to its vaunted investment banking and trading division, CNBC has learned. It’s most in-demand among salespeople and other client-facing staff who often field questions from hedge funds or other institutional investors, said Huberty. Productivity boostIn a recent demonstration, the GPT-4 based chatbot was able to summarize Morgan Stanley’s position on matters from copper to Nvidia to the finer points of standing up a data center, understanding industry-specific jargon and providing charts and links to source material. The tool is embedded within workers’ browsers as well as Microsoft Teams and Outlook programs to make it readily available. Understandably, Huberty says she is often asked if AI could ultimately replace the analysts who are creating the reams of research published under Morgan Stanley’s banner.

There's a common belief that lower borrowing costs benefit so-called growth stocks, as they're often capital-intensive. "History also suggests value should outperform growth, at least over the six months following the first rate cut," he said. If the economic situation becomes a "hard-landing," however, he said that growth stocks could outperform. If it normalizes (i.e., becomes more upward sloping), value should outperform growth," he said, referring to a situation where short-term rates are lower than long-term rates. "Lower multiple value stocks have greater upside and less risk than the pricier 'glamor growth' group for the foreseeable future," Ball said.

The stock is consolidating just below all-time highs and if Netflix's move after earnings is any indication, I think SPOT should punch through to new all-time highs. We're currently trading at $386, just below the all-time highs of $387 set back in 2021. The earnings trajectory for this company has been insane: 2022 EPS ($3.09) 2023 EPS ($2.95) 2024 EPS +$6.37 2025 EPS +$9.06 (est.) Netflix beat expectations and broke to new all-time highs led by new subs, 50% of which are coming from an ad tier. Meta is also in the communication sector sitting close to new all-time highs like NFLX, so the trend for this group remains firmly higher.

The U.S. presidential election is fast approaching, but it may not have as much an impact on markets as people may think, some investors say. History suggests the strong performance bodes well for a post-election pop into year's end. When Trump was elected in the 2016 presidential election, investors expected energy would perform well — but the subsequent two years proved unfavorable for the sector. During the 2000 election, volatility lasted for more than 30 days, through December. "We encourage investors to keep their long-term objectives in mind during periods of uncertainty and position for election related volatility," Guerra wrote.
