This train goes nowhere. Now it’s a luxury attraction

CNN —South Africa is home to some of the most luxurious, nostalgic train journeys on offer anywhere in the world. But for certain enthusiasts, a train going nowhere is the country’s star attraction. Kruger Shalati: The Train on the Bridge is a hotel in Skukuza in Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s largest game reserves and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. “The culture of steam trains and the culture of historical trains I think is beginning to re-emerge,” says Mabena. “We don’t have a moving steam train, but one day, I think we will.”

AdvertisementAfter three decades on the island, Melville says he and his wife are preparing to relocate to the nearby town of Oban to be closer to family. Reflecting on his time on the island, Melville said he'd miss the "peace and quiet" that came with living so close to the water, as well as the surrounding natural scenery. The championships usually bring in between 600 and 900 visitors from across the world, Melville said. The island is accessible via a small ferry from Seil, another island that's connected to the mainland by a bridge. "And they'll look at this 21-foot open boat with seats on it, and the ferryman says, 'This is the ferry,'" Melville said.

United’s goals, scored by Rasmus Hojlund and Marcus Rashford, were things of beauty at the start and end of the first half. The deal requires Premier League approval, which Ratcliffe said Sunday he expects to come next month. “I have done a few exciting things," the British billionaire told media before kickoff, "but this caps it all. So far, I'm succeeding: In 2023, I averaged 10,632 steps a day, or just over 5 miles. But walking a lot can still improve your well-being: Just 4,000 steps per day reduces your risk of "all-cause mortality," according to a recent study. Certified nutritionist and longevity expert Michiko Tomioka, who herself aims for 10,000 steps a day, says that's "the most effective way [to get exercise]: Just take a walk." But to keep my body from complaining, I've had to invest in durable, supportive shoes, and quality doesn't come cheap. Hitting 10,000 steps requires being intentional—and creativeOn weekends, I may take my kids with me as I wander, or my husband, or my neighbors and proto-friends.

Purifoy, an Alabama native who lived mostly in Los Angeles and Joshua Tree before his death in 2004, was known for his large-scale assemblages made from discarded materials. Visitors can wander among more than 100 installations and sculptures at the artist’s former 10-acre residence. Purifoy’s early works, one of which is here, used charred debris gathered from the 1965 Watts rebellion, a series of uprisings in response to the violent arrest of a Black man in Los Angeles. Pieces like “Carousel,” which looks like a homemade space station made of toasters, skis and computers, make the capacity of Purifoy’s imagination to create such evocative sculptures from junk seem infinite. Free entry, donations are welcome.

Homeless people and their advocates say the sweeps are cruel and a waste of taxpayer money. The AP submitted data requests to 30 U.S. cities regarding encampment sweeps and received at least partial responses from about half. “Unfortunately, it’s becoming a way of life, and that is 100% incorrect.”For homeless people, sweeps can be traumatizing. But never an end solution.”There are many reasons why someone might reject shelter, say homeless people and their advocates. We’re walking around saying, ‘What do you need?’”In Portland, the encampment dismantled in July was cleared again, in September and November.

It was rare for Jewish women to practice radiology in post-Stalinist Russia, but that’s what Diana Amastis, now 95, did for most of her life in St. Petersburg in the 1950s and ’60s. She left that life in 1992, at the age of 64, to make New York her new home. She came with her daughter and granddaughter, to care for her ailing father, who had left Russia years earlier and lived in Washington Heights. Dr. Amastis remembers spending most days during her first years in the city caring for her granddaughter, who took English lessons at a school near their home. Dr. Amastis would wait outside the classroom to glean useful phrases, but she never felt confident about her command of the language.

The new protocol involves perfume samples on display and a salesperson on call to retrieve the item should a patron want to purchase. The company told CNN the change was implemented because perfumes and colognes were among the most frequently shoplifted items in Sephora stores, and shoplifting numbers were trending higher. At Sephora, consumers could handle the product themselves, wandering the aisles and filling up shopping baskets like they were at the supermarket. Returning to a different perfume shopping model is a bit of a return to the status quo of an earlier era. Previous generations did more interfacing with salespeople in stores, particularly for items like perfume, and perhaps we should too.

All three scenes were among the winning images of the Environmental Photographer of the Year 2023 competition, and all three were taken in Bangladesh. The country is one of the most vulnerable to climate change in the world, ranking seventh on the latest Global Climate Risk Index, based on data from 2000 to 2019. It’s prone to cyclones, tornadoes and floods, and it is estimated that by 2050, one in every seven people in Bangladesh will be displaced by climate change. He adds that this year’s competition saw entries from other regions also severely threatened by climate change, such as India, West Bengal, Antarctica and Argentina. With the image, he wants to communicate the impact of plastic pollution and hopes that when people see it, they might realize the consequence of throwing away plastic and change their behavior.

An Epic Pilgrimage Across Three Great Religions

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

THE CAPITAL of South Australia, Adelaide offers an almost utopian alternative to the typical urban sprawl. A moat of lush parklands surrounds a one-square-mile city center full of shops and restaurants. Beyond that, leafy suburbs give way to the Adelaide Hills, where koalas roam, and to the sea. Recently, transplant chefs from China and Vietnam have infused the petite city of just over a million people with diverse flavors. Best of all, it’s supremely easy to wander Adelaide by foot, stumbling upon discoveries while enjoying long, post-food-coma strolls.

It feels like a city, but it's small enough that everything is still accessibleIn 2018, I married my Danish husband and moved from Dallas, Texas to Copenhagen, Denmark. American grocery stores have a wide variety of ingredients and interesting foods. In Denmark, grocery stores tend to be smaller and offer a limited selection. But I still convert prices from the Danish kroner to the dollar pretty often. But in Copenhagen, they're often delivered to pickup points in grocery stores, convenience stores, or other public locations.

Children need to do more physical and practical work at school, and schools need to integrate more movement into students’ routines. Attending Back to School Night at my son’s middle school, I was saddened to see that instruction is done mostly via large screens and that the students have no recess. My grandchildren would love the opportunity to experience the life skills that I was lucky enough to enjoy. And of course she taught sewing and cooking. Today’s students could surely benefit by learning practical life skills like home ec and shop.

The whales were buoyed by a strong birthing year in 2021, when 18 calves were born into the population, the consortium said. However, consortium members cautioned that the high mortality faced by the whales from collisions and entanglement remains an unsustainable burden. Scientists say one reason the whales are now in decline has to do with warming oceans and climate change. Numerous lobster fishermen have opposed proposed fishing restrictions they fear would put them out of business rather than help whales. The right whale consortium said sublethal injuries to whales from collisions and fishing gear are also a major concern for the remaining population.
