In the seven most competitive Senate races, Democratic campaigns and outside groups launched 33 TV ads on abortion just in the last week, according to the ad-tracking firm AdImpact. Just one Republican ad, a Spanish-language spot from an outside group targeting Democratic Sen. Jacky Rosen of Nevada, mentioned abortion. Some Republicans warned that the party's failure to counter abortion attacks cost them crucial seats that year. In Arizona, Republican Senate candidate Kari Lake has softened her position on abortion rights. Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it.

The number of Republican women in the House has tripled to a record 36, including two nonvoting members. Others involved in the effort to boost GOP women are also hopeful they can reach a new milestone this year. The number of House candidates has dropped overall since 2022, a redistricting year that brought a surge of new candidates. The Center for Women and Politics found the steepest drop was among Republican women. For Stefanik, the effort to recruit more GOP women to run for the House has been a resounding success.

I said, I think you’re better than Martin Luther King. The Kansas Attorney General’s Office said in a statement Friday that it was Hanks’ admission in new interviews that allowed authorities to charge him in 2022, when he was living in Burden, Kansas. The sheriff said they believe it is the oldest cold case in Kansas to be solved and result in a conviction. In his interviews, Hanks admitted to killing Walter, the attorney general’s office said. The statements from the sheriff and attorney general’s office, and online court records, don’t say whether Hanks ever revealed his motive for killing Walter. Officials with the attorney general’s office and Hanks’ attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press on Saturday.

Craig, the former mayor of Manchester, beat out Cinde Warmington, a former health care lobbyist and a member of the state’s Executive Council, in the Democratic primary. Tuesday’s winners will quickly move into a rapid eight-week general election campaign to replace Republican Gov. She held a wide lead in most polls of the GOP primary, allowing her to set her sights early on the general election. Meanwhile, Maggie Goodlander defeated Colin Van Ostern in a contentious and expensive Democratic primary in New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District, the AP projected. The winner of the primary will enter the general election as the favorite in the blue-leaning 2nd District.

New Hampshire voters will head to the polls Tuesday for a primary that will set up the matchup for one of just two governor’s races in presidential battleground states this year. In addition to North Carolina, New Hampshire is the only other swing state to hold a race for governor this election cycle. “I think that helps people in New Hampshire realize that Kelly Ayotte is a New Hampshire Republican, not a straight party loyalist,” Williams said. In New Hampshire, abortion is banned after fetal viability, or around the 24th week of pregnancy. “We’ve seen in the last few years that governors and state leadership sort of make or break it when it comes to protecting abortion rights,” Levy said.

The wide receiver was driving to the Dolphins-Jacksonville Jaguars game on Sunday when Miami-Dade police stopped him just outside Hard Rock Stadium, handcuffed him and put him face down on the pavement. "If I wasn't Tyreek Hill, Lord knows, I probably would have been, like, worst-case scenario, I would have been shot or would have been locked up" and "put behind bars, you know, for a simple speeding ticket," Hill told NBC News. Hill was cited for reckless driving and driving without a license, said his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. The officer who has been put on administrative duty is a 25-year veteran of the department, according to the union. “When the officers were trying to talk to him, he was being very uncooperative,” Steadman Stahl, president of the South Florida Police Benevolent Association, told NBC South Florida.

In today’s edition, senior political editor Mark Murray looks at how Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are trying to position themselves as the candidate of change. Poll shows Trump winning the 'change' argument — for nowBy Mark MurrayIt’s not too surprising that the latest national New York Times/Siena College poll finds a razor-close contest between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris. In the NYT/Siena poll, 25% of likely voters said Harris represents major change and 15% said she represents minor change, while 55% said she represents more of the same. That’s compared with 53% of voters who see Trump as representing major change, 8% as minor change, and 34% as more the same. Breaking barriers in Delaware: State Sen. Norah O’Donnell recently announced that she will be stepping down as anchor of “CBS Evening News” after the election, after five years at the helm. I knew viewers were seeing these stories because Norah was the driving force behind telling them. Like so many watching, I marveled at the incredible athleticism of these young women, as well as at their diversity. Equally exciting was the fact that this was the first Olympics in history where there were as many women as men competing. We’re also in the midst of a campaign that could result in the election of the first woman president, and first woman of color as president.

Wednesday’s pretrial hearing, which has been scheduled for months, followed a whiplash decision by Austin to revoke a plea deal that had been announced just two days prior last week. “What he did was illegal,” Eugene Fidell, who teaches military justice at Yale University and co-founded the National Institute of Military Justice, told CNN. But Sowards argued Wednesday that by revoking the deal, Austin was actually doing more harm to the families. While the terms of the pretrial agreement had not been released publicly, among them was the assurance that the detainees would answer questions by 9/11 victim family members. Sowards said family members had already “been submitting questions in good faith,” and expecting answers in return as part of the deal.

Walter Arlen, a Viennese musical prodigy who fled to the United States after Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938 and became a music critic and a late-in-life composer of Holocaust and Jewish-exile remembrances in song, died on Sept. 3, 2023, in Santa Monica, Calif. He was 103. The death, in a hospital, was not widely reported at the time; Howard Myers, Mr. Arlen’s husband and sole survivor, confirmed it to The New York Times only recently. Mr. Arlen and Mr. Myers, longtime residents of Santa Monica, had been companions for 65 years and were married in 2008 after California’s Supreme Court upheld the legality of same-sex marriages. Even after eight decades, Mr. Arlen’s memories remained vivid — of his father being dragged off to a concentration camp; of his mother’s nervous breakdown and suicide; of his family’s home, business and bank accounts stolen by the Nazi authorities; and of witnessing the vicious murder of an older Jew by an SS guard.

It seemed as though the game was destined for a draw, but striker Walter Bou had other ideas. Many on social media – including his club’s official account – have touted Bou’s effort as a FIFA Puskás Award contender. “Just give Walter Bou the Puskás award now,” one X user wrote. “CBS Evening News,” one of America’s longest-running newscasts, is getting a significant overhaul, one that will put the role of a singular and towering Walter Cronkite-like evening news anchor in the rearview mirror. Just two days after Norah O’Donnell announced that she would depart the show’s anchor chair this fall, CBS News executives said she would be replaced by John Dickerson, the network’s lead political analyst and the host of an evening CBS News streaming show, and Maurice DuBois, a longtime anchor for the CBS affiliate in New York. Additionally, the network named Lonnie Quinn, a local weatherman and Mr. DuBois’s colleague at WCBS-TV, the first-ever chief weathercaster for “Evening News.” Other veteran CBS journalists, like Jim Axelrod, Steve Hartman and Margaret Brennan, are expected to be regular presences on the show, as will other correspondents. Mr. DuBois and Mr. Quinn will continue in their local roles as well, the network said. In some ways, the program, with dedicated weather segments and a cast of frequently appearing correspondents, may resemble something closer to a morning show, or a local newscast.

Toby Melville | ReutersFARNBOROUGH, England — Massive airplane orders, hundreds deep in recent years, were absent from this year's biggest air show. One standout was Air Korea's order for up to 50 Boeing wide-body planes, including the 777X, which Boeing is working toward getting certified by regulators. As both manufacturers grapple with production strains, Air Korea CEO Walter Cho quipped during the Boeing order signing: "Whichever comes first will become our flagship, whoever's on time." Boeing has an overall backlog of close to 5,500 planes, while Airbus has more than 8,000 on order. Many airlines from United Airlines to Air India have also stocked up on new jet orders as travel rebounded in the pandemic.

Kamala Harris and the Race for Congress
  + stars: | 2024-07-29 | by ( German Lopez | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
With President Biden out of the 2024 race, Democrats aren’t just hoping to win the presidency. He ran behind congressional Democrats in polls. He could have cost his party otherwise winnable House and Senate races by causing Democratic-leaning voters to stay home. “And so they might not have shown up.”Much of what Kamala Harris and Donald Trump would do as president depends on which party controls Congress. The race for the Senate favors Republicans, but if Democrats forestall a wipeout, they could at least limit the G.O.P.’s agenda.

Read previewElon Musk's transgender daughter said the Tesla CEO was an absent father who frequently rebuked her for being queer and feminine as a child. Wilson, who has stayed out of the public eye until now, told NBC News that Musk's comments went too far. Wilson told NBC News the book — which described her as being a supporter of "radical Marxism" via a quote from Musk's sister-in-law — was inaccurate and unfair. Isaacson also referred to Wilson by her middle name, Jenna, in the book, Wilson said. The author told NBC News that he reached out to Wilson's family members in an effort to reach her.

New York CNN —Vivian Jenna Wilson, Elon Musk’s estranged daughter, publicly refuted several recent anti-trans statements her Tesla CEO and X owner father has made about her. After her transition, the billionaire said, he “vowed to destroy the woke mind virus.”Musk has previously been criticized for his anti-trans comments. Musk has previously spoken about his daughter, including in the authorized biography written by journalist Walter Isaacson and published last year. In the book, the billionaire blamed his daughter’s transition in part on her time at a progressive, Los Angeles school. In the Peterson interview, Musk said he considers his child “dead” following her transition.

Vivian Jenna Wilson, the transgender daughter of Elon Musk, said Thursday in her first public interview that he was an absent father who was cruel to her as a child for being queer and feminine. Wilson, 20, in an exclusive interview with NBC News, responded to comments that Musk made Monday about her and her transgender identity. She told NBC News that at the time, she was surprised by the media attention to the court filing, which she submitted when she was 18. Wilson told NBC News that those anecdotes are not true, though she said she did act stereotypically feminine in other ways as a child. Musk told Peterson that Wilson's gender transition has been the motivation for his push into conservative politics.
