Both beta amyloid plaques and tau tangles are early signs of the brain’s march toward a possible Alzheimer’s disease diagnosis. “Most of a person’s body mass index (BMI) reflects subcutaneous fat, not visceral fat,” Raji said. “The more visceral fat one has, the more inflammation happens in the body and it’s much worse, in truth, than the inflammation that occurs with subcutaneous fat,” Raji said. Visceral fat receives more blood flow due to its placement near organs and is more hormonally active than subcutaneous fat, Raji said. “Previously, we had only showed a link between visceral fat and amyloid.”The PET scans showed that as visceral fat levels went up, so did levels of both amyloid and tau, according to the new research.

Experts have warned the suspension of EU talks is another sign the country is going down an undemocratic path under Georgian Dream.

BUSAN, South Korea Reuters —Countries negotiating a global treaty to curb plastic pollution have failed to reach agreement, with more than 100 nations wanting to cap production while a handful of oil-producers were prepared only to target plastic waste. The most divisive issues included capping plastic production, managing plastic products and chemicals of concern, and financing to help developing countries implement the treaty. An option proposed by Panama, backed by more than 100 countries, would have created a path for a global plastic production reduction target, while another proposal did not include production caps. At Baku, countries set a new global target for mobilizing $300 billion annually in climate finance, a deal deemed woefully insufficient by small island states and many developing countries. Plastic production is on track to triple by 2050, and microplastics have been found in the air, fresh produce and even human breast milk.

CNN —The mother of Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to lead the Department of Defense, sent an email to her son in 2018 that sharply criticized his treatment of women, The New York Times reported Friday. Penelope Hegseth told her son in the email that there are “many” women whom he has “abused in some way” and encouraged him to “get some help,” according to the email published by The Times. According to The Times’ report, Penelope Hegseth wrote, “I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego. An attorney for Pete Hegseth declined to comment. Penelope Hegseth sent the email to her son on April 30, 2018, according to The Times’ report — around six months after the alleged assault.
